“Your home away from home in Dar-es-Salaam”
Reviewed January 11, 2013

The Sea Cliff Hotel is a fantastic base in Dar es Salaam. We stayed there for 4 nights as my husband had a business meeting in the hotel and before going off to explore Tanzania. The hotel is perfect as it combines great business facilities (good meeting rooms, Internet access, efficient staff) but still feels like a holiday resort. The staff is really helpful, friendly and welcoming. There is also a 'Sea Cliff' village a few minutes away which has a few restaurants and cafes, as well as a few shops (special mention to the Green Room with brilliant arts and craft to bring back home!!!).
During the day, I used the swimming pool and enjoyed the views on the Indian Ocean. There is also excellent equipment in the gym, which I felt I had to use! The hotel main restaurant, the Karembezi Cafe, is actually one of the best restaurants in Dar. It is not a bland chain hotel restaurant, it is worth the detour.
We were so happy about our stay that we decided to use the Sea Cliff for our stay in Zanzibar!

I traveled to Tanzania to meet dear friends that had relocated there. They had told us, come to Tanzania and experience a great African holiday. The Sea Cliff hotel would be our base for an amazing reunion. I must admit that I have not been disappointed once over the 7 days that we spent together. Everything started out well from the friendly welcome and greetings from the front desk reception. The staff was friendly and very attentive to our every need. We quickly decided to soak the heat and settle in our holidays with a chilled drink from the Karembezi cafe overlooking the ocean. Wow that cafe has personality. The staff once again was friendly, chatty and keen to make sure we had a great time. Every other day at the hotel was conveniently punctuated by a splash at the pool, an energising gym session at the hotel gym and great food at the different restaurants. The room was spacious, clean and equipped with all modern facilities.
The highlight of the holiday was a funky night at the Karembezi to celebrate NYE. The food was delicious, the dancing was crazy and the price was right. I fully recommend this hotel if you are looking for fun, sunny and warm hearted holidays. This is the place to be in Dar. Enjoy your holidays there.

As an Expat travelling to Dar from Canada on a monthly rotational basis I have been staying at the Sea Cliff many times in the past 5 1/2 years. I have found the hotel management and staff to be extremely friendly. From the Masai at the front door to the Senior management everyone greats me by name. I feel this to be an honor to remebered this way. The rooms are excellant, always maintained to superb standards. Any concerns have always been dealt with in a very timely manner. The restaurants have exceptional choices and serve all meals perfectly. The location is one of the best in Dar es Salaam. The location is such that there are various shops and stores next door in the Village and is close enough to the Slipway for other shopping needs. The ocean view is spectacular.

Beautiful location. Nice and agreeable hotel.
It is a must to clean the mold stains in the showers with bleach. It can be cleaner. It smells mold because of the humidity in the room caused by air-conditioning and absence of air circulation in the bathroom.
Breakfast can certainly be better with minimum work. Put more fruits, 1 person plus to help the lady who does the smoothy since she has to do the pancakes also. In the breakfast area there are too many people working. It is overwhelming. It does not help you a lot since you can not get your eggs in couple of minutes you have to wait. The lady . It means everything takes time.
The eggs are whitish since the chickens eat coco.
Breakfast is expensive. (16$/person)
Exchange office is closed after 6PM until 9AM.
Out of center 30 min to airport on weekends.
Will try next time Serena hotel chain of Aga Khan foundation.

Unfortunately I cannot contact you directly to further discuss the issues you mention and check which room you were in etc... Well please do not hesitate to contact me by email, this would be greatly appreciated:
marketing@hotelseacliff.com

I can however answer a couple of your concerns: First of all, the current season (December) is really humid (peaking at 80-90% humidity) this is obviously very hard for any hotel, particularly off the sea, not to have humidity issues at that period. The air conditioning in the rooms make it actually worse. We do everything we can on a daily basis to avoid those issues and it is not due to a lack of maintenance or cleaning. We actually have to repaint the rooms 2 or 3 times a year on average to give you an idea of the implications.

Also we were very surprised by you comment on the breakfast. First of all because the breakfast is included in the price of the room and we DO NOT CHARGE for it.
Secondly because we are well known in Dar es Salaam to provide one of the best breakfast in town (You were mentioning the tailor-made smoothie bar and the pancakes station just to name a few - these are not the kind of features you have in every hotel). We also have homemade fresh juices, fresh fruits, pastries, cheeses, a choice of about 15 hot dishes from Spanish Omelet, French toast, English breakfast... (For info eggs are indeed a lot whiter in Africa compared to Europe, it does depend on the diet of the animal and if artificial colouring agents like tartrazine or sunset yellow are added to their food which is done in Europe; we use 100% local bio eggs).

We do take feedback very seriously and always take them as a way to improve ourselves. It would be great if you could contact me to further discuss those issues and understand better why you decided to rate us average.

Many thanks in advance.

I've stayed here a few times & have enjoyed my stay each time. Amazing views over the Indian Ocean. Food is great, especially the fish. The restaurant & bar have a lovely atmosphere. Rooms both in the main hotel & in the Sea Cliff Village (which is next door) are well kept & safe. Hotel is located within a short car ride from town and to Slip Way which a great place to hang out. Hotel has lots of shops and restaurants next door.

Both the cleaning staff and the restaurant wait staff are well-trained, anticipate your needs, smile, say good morning, and are generally solicitous of guests. If only the reception and management were the same. In 14 days I never once saw a smile from behind the reception desk. Most of the managers are hidden in their offices and the general manager is absolutely nowhere to be found. At one point I asked for a room change to avoid being over the noisy pool area. I never heard from one manager who had promised to find me something, and the other, the next day, took his time.

As for the physical plant, the plumbing can be problematic – a number of rooms smell pretty strongly of open sewer. The internet can be spotty – it works close to the center of the building but the signal gets weaker as you get out to the wings. Of course none of the “useful numbers” on the telephone exchange list get you to where they say they will. The 0 for reception and front desk is busy 9 times out of 10.

Dear Guest,

As discussed with you privately I would like to formally apologize again for the bad experience you had with us. However I am convinced it was an unfortunate chain of events (your colleagues greatly appreciated their stay with us) and I am sure we will change your mind on your next visit if we have the chance to welcome you again.

I really appreciate you have been kind enough to go into more details about your experience.

To bring a bit of light on your comment, I can only stress that our staff is permanently trained to greet guest in the best possible way and the management, including myself are most of the time available to meet guest anytime.

As per the facility, the period you visited us (rainy season) is really humid, with peaks at 80-90% humidity. It is therefore very difficult for any hotel in those climate conditions to avoid the inconvenience of humidity (The air conditioning make it even worst). We therefore can only count on your understanding that conditions in Tanzania are sometimes extreme.

Finally, the Internet is planned for an upgrade this year.

You have my details should you have further questions / feedback on the hotel or should you hopefully want to come and visit us again.

Very best regards.
