“Not much on first impressions, but a great place to eat!!!!”

On first sight, it doesn't look like anything special. When my friends and I arrived there at dusk, most of us decided to head back to the hotel - however, two of us stayed, and we were sooooo glad we did. After strolling around, and posing with a pufferfish (standard), we decided on one of the many women cooking food on portable stoves. After loading a plate full of veggie-yumminess, we sat down at a bench with a load of locals, and handed mugs of chai (food and chai for less than £0.40!). A really memorable experience, and I would highly recommend it. You get a real feel of Tanzanian city life. Make sure you try the spiced octopus and fish (sooo good) and watch out for mashed plantain (looks just like mashed spud, but nowhere near as nice!!)

“Busy and Smelly but Enlightening”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 28, 2011

Well what an amazing experience. Went there on a Saturday and was a first time visit. Walked with my friend from the Southern Sun Hotel. Not to far and the walk itself was interesting enough just seeing the city sights and going ons.. The market is very busy especially in the morning when the fisherman bring in their catch for sale. There is two sections, one for buying fish at a price per unit and another section were the women crowd to buy allotments of fish after much haggling, shouting and I think arguing too even after a price has been set. All sorts of fish, shell fish and whatnot's there, freshly caught. In the market is also a section were dedicated people fillet the fish for a fee. Across the road from the market is a place were people can have their newly cleaned fish cooked. A lot of women buy fish in the morning, have them cleaned and cooked and then sell later in the city at road side stalls. Were they cook the fish are seashell sellers. Magnificent shells to buy if only you could import them back home. People are friendly enough and the market safe to walk around, just make sure you know were your valuables are at all times as the crowds can get big. Its a busy and smelly place but enlightening to the westerners mind how things are done here in Dar. Worth a visit.
