“It's not a bad place”
Reviewed January 5, 2012

This Hotel located within the City Centre is a reasonably comfortable place for the room rate. Negotiate the quoted rate as owners would rather not waste room revenue. The breakfast is great though gets boring if you are staying for a longer period. The staff are very helpful. The Hotel boasts of ocean view but soon that will be history as a new building next door will obscure that view. The Internet works most of the time. Try going to the terrace for a grand view of the City. Be very careful with your prized possession but that is true throughout Dar. The Mirch Masala Restaurant is not a bad place, the Indian and Chinese food is ok but avoid the burgers as I found them rather soggy. Avoid lower floors as it can get very noisy.

Room Tip: The Hotel has three self contained suites on the 10th floor. Take a peek if you can get a marginall...

I stayed here in November 2011 in a double room with a baby. I found the staff very helpful and the accomodation clean and adequate. The bathroom consisted of a standard toilet, standard sink with drawers and shelves for storing personal items, and a stand up shower. Within minutes of turning on the hot water switch, you were provided very hot water with good pressure. The rooms did have a TV, but limited channels per the Tanzanian cable system. WiFI was available but slow. Again, standard for the country. The individual air conditioning unit kept the room cool, although quite noisy. However, seeing as there was construction going on next door, the A/C unit actually drowned out the construction noise.

I stayed for three days and came to greet many of the other residents. This hotel is frequented by return guests who I found to be businessmen both Tanzanian and foreign. It is true that theft occurs at this location... as it does in MOST hotels in Dar es Salaam. Although the Rainbow Hotel post multiple signs and advisements about leaving money and personal belongings in the rooms, some residents do not heed the warnings and find themselves the victim of theft. This would happen in any Dar es Salaam hotel.

Overall the food was ok, but the location of the hotel allowed for you to wander (in the daytime) and find all kinds of food options within a stone's throw away. Several banks, atms, diners, forex, and souvenir shops were close by. Taxi's and dalla dalla's were in abundance and as long as I was traveling on foot during the day and kept a level head, I felt safe wandering alone.

Room Tip: Although originally built with a complete view of the ocean, the property next door was sold and ano...

This was our worst experience in Tanzania! The room was a cubicle, with no space for any luggage, the receptionist was asleep when we arrived, and they told us that there was no bottle water to buy or in the rooms, with scorching temperatures. The Tanzanite Executive Suites is around the corner from this hotel, and CHEAPER! Please, look up other hotels, and I would not recommend this place to anyone! The food was also terrible!

Room Tip: Don't book a room here!!! Go to the Tanzanite Executive Suites around the corner - they are 1000...

The Rainbow Hotel is best described as "no frills but wonderfully functional". The rooms are basic but comfortable, the internet is consistent and of a good speed, the showers are strong and the staff were efficient despite being brusque.

What truly recommends this hotel is its location: it's in the centre; near the ferry, close to ATMs, Bureau de Changes and a supermarket and - I discovered - very close to Mamboz which is a great little nyama choma just down the road (see glowing restaurant reviews).

If you're on a budget and looking for a short stay, this is a great value hotel.

Room Tip: The higher floors are the ones with the views of the harbour, those lower are now obscured by the bu...

I was surprised by this hotel. I had my doubts beforehand but was more than happy with the hotel once I'd settled.

The double room I had was basic, but it had what was needed & the bed was very comfortable. I wouldn't want to have to try and kill time in the room though. The range of channels on the TV was limited. The free internet definitely helped pass the time; it was about the speed I would expect in the country & mostly was good enough for what I needed (although I wouldn't recommend trying to watch a video etc on it hehe).

The indian & chinese food I sampled in the restaurant on the 1st floor was excellent and would recommend it to anyone staying there. The rest of the menu has a nice variety of food compared to many more expensive places I've stayed in. The breakfast selection was however very limited and basic though.

Most of the staff were friendly & happy to oblige (especially the restaurant staff). The only issue I really had to resolve with them though was getting the room key re-activated (which seemed to be most days). Even less reliable though was the power in the country. Fortunately the hotel's generator kicks in within a few seconds (although it's a shame the gap in between wasn't covered).

So, if you're staying on a budget or don't fancy the big name chains then this could be a reasonable alternative.

There's a myriad of exchange bureaus nearby (including one next door) which makes sorting any currency so simple. There's also a handy little shopping centre/mall just around the corner with a few ATMs & shops which may be of use.

Room Tip: The rooms at the end of the second floor are over the kitchen and so not recommended if you're a...

Dear friends, If you are visiting Dar es Salaam as a business delegate or as a tourist I suggest you to try "Hotel Rainbow".
I was first stayed there for 10 days ( 19-29 Sept 2011) and enjoyed the real hotel environment.
Its a great place for new comers specially as the staff, workers and including the promoters were very helpful in everything. Mirch Masala- A nice restaurant of international standard that provides excellent food. If you are a fish lover forget not to try "King Fish Fry".
I therefore, recommend you all to try and enjoy.
I trust this hotel because I have enjoyed my stay and "Seeing is Believing".

Room Tip: Rooms Facing the Ocean are very special

I stayed here for 1 week. Had an amazing time in dar and I think my experience was mainly because of the friendly staff and there knowledge of the area and where to go as this was my first time in dar. Also the restaurant is a must as the food is excellent. Will definitely be back. Thanks for your hospitality
