Giraffe Ocean View Hotel
Ranked #52 of 96 Hotels in Dar es Salaam

It is by the beach, so you get the sea breeze while you take breakfast, which is quite good. Food is in general abundant and tasty, either at breakfast or if you order at the restaurant (on the beach).
The rooms are spacious, they have almost everything you need (except for ironing trousers) if you're in business, like I was and the facilities are good.
The staff is friendly and, in general, efficient - my colleague had problems with the A/C and they just solved it after she got really mad about it (with reason).
The best thing was being able to work by the sea, on a shade, with my feet on the sand, with my laptop connect to electricity - that's quality while working!
Just an observation: on saturdays and sundays it is common to bump into weddings there, and the music will be quite loud.

We stayed at the Giraffe ocean view hotel despite the negative trip advisor reviews. There was an exhibition in Nairobi of places to stay over 2013 Christmas holidays and one of the stands was this hotel. The Mombasa Kenyan hotels during Christmas had advertised double or even triple their normal daily rates hence were expensive. The price of this beach hotel was fair and would not double over Christmas. We thought the deal was too good to be true, hence decided to check it out and try out a weekend at the hotel, before booking it for the Christmas holidays. We were pleasantly surprised and happy that we gave it a try. The hotel was very good and even had interesting Sunday entertainment. There was a play ground by the beach that the kids enjoyed and played the whole Sunday afternoon. The staff were friendly and attentive to any need.I would definitely recommend it for a budget friendly holiday. We are looking forward to staying there over Christmas where they promised there would be a whole afternoon of great entertainment. Try the hotel. You will enjoy your stay.

Room Tip: Choose an ocean view room

I came to this magnificent resort as part of the conference delegates last year, 2012, was able to see the "power of the nature"-in every morning one could see huge pileup of ocean seaweeds on the beach side of the hotel, astonishingly!, when the sun gets down, non of the seaweed is there- everything has been washed-away with ocean currents!. "it is so confusing and uncontrollable" one of the manager yelled. This time around i couldn't see that pileup again- something good must have been done. I like the unique ocean breezy jetty, and glocal taste of food(bit of local and global). Thanks for the management generosity- Every time when we windup our conference they arrange cocktail party for all delegates and mingle with management - great idea!. However, i specifically booked in advance #403 which i stayed last time(spectacular ocean view) but was given 405 instead.
Wish to come back again.

Room Tip: rooms on 3rd floor,# 401 onwards have spectacular ocean view

Sometimes I just do not get it. Business owners build fantastic resorts with jetty's, great ocean view, great seating and then disaster strikes. Mismanaged, careless staff, tasteless food. What a shame to spill all that money into the sea...
I use to come here with my kids to swim and have a meal, but the last time I noticed that the the pool was kind of slippery in a awkward way. The water was clear- so it appeared. However, my whole family ended up with skin irritations that evening and night.
I do not understand that management can oversee it. Last time, will not go back.

I've been here for several conferences. The conference facilities are decent, the food adequate, and - if it is open - the outdoor restaurant on a jetty off the beach is unique. But the whole place is somewhat run down, the rooms lack air conditioning, and they tried to charge me $100 for a $20 taxi ride to town.

We stayed for only one night and that was more than enough. No wifi access in our room, no hot water in the morning and the birds are enjoying more than us the breakfast buffet. When we went for breakfast, birds and flies were all over the place and picking directly in the plates.

We finally decided to move to the Best Western nearby.

In desperate need of maintenance and an overall overhaul! The location could be lovely if the filthy and stinky beach were cleaned up. The rooms were once very nice but have fallen into disrepair. Features like a spa bath in the en suite no longer work. I had no hot water for two of the four days I stayed here for a work conference. The staff were unresponsive and apathetic to my complaint re the water. The food was mediocre at best. This is an overpriced hotel with absolutely terrible customer service. It's horrendously over priced for the condition of the hotel and level of service. Stay somewhere else!
