“Expect forced shopping, but you will see Tangiers Old & New”
Reviewed March 19, 2013

We got the "35 minute" (more like 70 minute) ferry from Tarifa to Tangiers, and the trip included a drive around the city by bus and lunch. Unsurprisingly, it also included a lot of "lookie, lookie" in our guide's friends' shops at a bizarre range of souvenirs and spices.

A return ferry journey with no guide would have cost €53, so we decided to go with the tour including lunch for €59. It was interesting to see the city by minibus, as we got to see both the new and old parts, but we could have walked in about 5 mins from the ferry terminal to the medina (old town) and not spent so long waiting on the other members of our tour group to buy various bits of "ethnic tat".

Was it worth doing the tour? I'm not sure it was, but it was worth seing Tangiers.

“Day trip Tangier, Morocco”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

This tour is ridiculous, like others here have said, it started off fine, we caught the ferry over and enjoyed watching the Atlas mountains approach us. Even the first stop, camel ride, was good fun. I'd never been on a camel before and while it is touristy to do this, I like animals and wanted the experience. Things started to go down hill from there as we were bused to the medina. In my head I knew we'd be hassled, but this was a joke, any time one of our group wanted to stop at a bakery or any shop that was not receiving a kick back from this "tour company" we were told to hurry along and there was no time. But of course there was plenty of time to watch carpets being shown off to us, and a snake oil sales man do a spin on a variety of products.

We did the tour because the price difference between doing it on your own and with these guys is minimal, however if you want to pop over to Tangiers do it alone, without the tour. It's easy enough to do and I'm sure you will have a much more relaxed and enjoyable time than doing the tour where you will be worn down by sales people and possibly miss your ferry because they really don't care about getting you back in time (luckily we drove to Tarifa, there were others who missed bus connections).

“20 hour from Seville to Tanger - nightmare!!!!”
Reviewed November 19, 2012

We bought online a ticket from Tarifa to Tangier for 1PM on Nov 7th 2012. The company cancelled the boats in morning and ours at 1PM. They were to confirm the one at 5PM, but cancelled it too due to bad weather. So far, ok. They suggested us to go to Algeciras and take the ferry - that "would leave on time". No one even bothered to call us a cab, they simply handed us the telephone number. We arrived in Algeciras and another company, IMTC, had a ferry that was leaving at 5PM while FRS would be at 6PM, we asked them the refund and their reply was: "Sorry we don't refund". But they assured us they would leave on time. Then, we waited for 3 hours at a waiting room - no food, no water, no prevision of departure. We asked them, many times, the passporte control guards don't wanted to get involved and even were theatening us if we wanted to leave "you are gonna miss your boat". We felt like hostages. When we finally boarded the ship, it took another 3hours to depart. Our account: 20 hours to get to Tangier from Seville, missed one train to Fes, had 1 night less in Fes EUR 500 loss. No assistance from the company nor from Spanish authorities. Absolute nightmare.

“35min what a joke!”
Reviewed September 13, 2012

The journey announced as super fast and only 35min long from tarifa to tanger took around one hour without counting the line up for the security and passport control. We booked the trip to pass a nice afternoon in Tanger, walk around in the streets and have a short look at Moroccan culture. The trip was interesting but we passed most of the time waiting in lines for the traveling and the super short cross over and once in Tanger we were only searching for reasons to get rid of all the nice people wanting only our best by guiding us through the city or trying to sell things to us.

“Set your expectations and know what you're getting into if you go with FRS”
Reviewed September 8, 2012

I did the 1 day excursion Tuesday, 10 July, with my husband and teenage daughter. (He was very keen to NOT do this trip on our own.) I had read some of the negative reviews and that allowed me to set expectations ahead of time. Our particular tour was a quick bus ride along one road that runs along the beach in the international region, a stop for an optional camel ride (that lasted about a minute and cost 1 euro--kitsch, but much appreciated by my daughter--for her it was the best part of our whole trip to Spain) and then a walk through the Medina. Half of the tour was devoted to being trotted from shop to shop, being given a very hard-selling pitch at each. The lunch that was provided us, however, was quite good (yes, drinks are extra). At the end, despite several others on the tour telling our guide it was getting late, she brushed them off and got us to the ferry on the late side--too late to be processed through the excrutiatingly slow passport control and we missed our ferry. (They do run every 2 hrs at least, for the most part.) One of our fellow travellers said he had been on that 1 day tour 3 times before and he had seen more sights; our particular tour was disappointing for him. Our bus was about half full, and we were the only English speakers aboard (I just speak basic Spanish), and at least she made the effort to repeat for us in English some of what she said in Spanish first, but it was pretty minimal content, and was very repetitive. We would really have loved to have learned more from her.
So, I would echo what a lot of others seem to have said; if you want a more "real" Morocco experience, feel confident doing it on your own, or have high expectations, then pass on this "1 Day Excursion". If you are okay with just taking it for what it is, and experiencing something very diffent, then maybe give it a try. It could be these trips are very guide-dependent. Despite everything, we had a good time. And now next time maybe I would feel more confident booking a couple days in Marrakesh... on our own.
