My boyfriend and I were only in Tangier for a few nights last summer. We are a young Canadian couple who were travelling mostly around Spain. I am SO happy we chose Dar Jand. The rooms are a little bit small, however they are beautifully decorated and there are many nooks to curl up in and check out the shelves full of interesting reads on the people and places around Tangier, as well as a rooftop terrace where we were able to relax. The BEST part about staying with Janet and Andrew was having them around! Andrew ensured we were able to find our way to and from their place pointing out all the landmarks, and showed us to an amazing family run restaurant that we never would have found without them. They taught us a few key cultural points including some phrases that definitely helped us out in the market. Our short time was jam packed with suggestions from Janet and Andrew and I wouldn't have changed a thing. If you are new to the area and looking to make the most of a short visit I would highly recommend spending time at Dar Jand.

My wife and I made a quick trip to Morocco, way too short but we were already going to be nearby in Spain. We stayed at Dar Jand for only about 20 hours but the experience was AMAZING! A perfect way to start our trip and we immediately realized that it was a mistake to not stay longer. Andrew and Janet were kind, insightful, and giving. Great food, great room, all necessities were great. But, they gave us interesting conversation about the people and culture, a good American perspective on Morocco. We will go back some day and we will stay with them in Tangiers if we do. I gave them a "very good" on sleep quality. They live right by a mosque which does wake you up early in the morning. But, that is part of the Moroccan experience! Oh, and they took us on an orientation tour of the city!

I must begin saying that I am not happy to give only two stars to this Riad, because the owners are friendly, but I would have been grateful to read this opinion before staying there.
Andrew and Janet are a nice couple, willing to help you at all times, giving clues not to get lost on your walks; they recommend you where to go, what to see and give you options of places to eat or drink; they can also manage a driver for short trips and to pick you up and take you to the airport.
The Riad is well-located in the Medina of Tanger, yes; has a lovely terrace, yes, that is accessed up four floors of closed stairs; the breakfast is a good breakfast, yes (not astonishing as I read on some reviews, good is an adjective more real).
The problem is that you can't charge 700DH (70 €) for a room that is said to be triple and you can hardly qualify as double.
I am speaking of the Rif Khdar room: with no place to leave luggage, no space between the double bed and the wall, without cabinet (barely a box), where the third person has to sleep in a claustrophobic cache and almost inaccessible, with uncomfortable mattresses and a bathroom with a shower that is a hole in the ground (photo attached of everything said).
If it costs for example 450DH (45 €) and they said you the real dimension and inconvenience, it would be your choice to accept it, but it is not fair to find yourself with this room for this price in Tangier. In addition, it is a noisy room that overlooks the street.
I'm sorry but I do not recommend this Riad.

Dear Jaume;

We are very saddened to learn of your discomfort and dissatisfaction with the Rif Khdar guest room. We were aware upon your arrival that you felt this room to be small. We inquired if there was something we could do, with no response on your part. We do not understand why you harbored your unhappiness and stayed for 2 nights without allowing us to rectify the situation. It is always our concern for our guests to be comfortable and happy. We are surprised to learn about your thoughts AFTER you departed Dar JAND. WHY was this not discussed during your stay???? Moreover, if you have read any of our guest reviews, you would know of our dedication to our guests’ comfort.

The Rif Khdar guest room is one of our most popular rooms. It provides comfort and economy to our guests …. Not to mention that this room has been occupied over the years with many satisfied guests as a double room accommodating a third person. Our website titles this a double room; our correspondence with you references a double room with a small sleeping loft accessed via ladder at 600dh/night and an additional 100dh third person charge. We never represent this guest room as a triple. Our website clearly states we have 2 GROUND floor DOUBLE rooms with ensuite toilet room at 600dh/night, second floor DOUBLE room with 2 single beds, ensuite bathroom with bathtub and personal salon, 750dh/night and at the terrace level a DOUBLE room with a large bed and large bathroom and private solarium, 950dh/night. If we had a triple room, the cost would be in excess of 1,100dh per night.

Our website includes photographs of the Rif Khdar guest room, which depicts the true size and character including the small sleeping loft and ladder and ensuite toilet room, with an open shower (not a hole in the floor).

Our website also states that we are located in an authentic Moroccan neighborhood and that the Rif Khdar guest room is on the ground floor. The window has shutters (for light and sound control) and we always provide ear plugs and discuss the “street noise” upon arrival.

It is always our guest’s choice to accept or decline what we offer. Dar JAND will always be happy to work with our guests, even if it means that we help them find alternative accommodations.

Jaume, we are so sorry that your stay with us at Dar JAND was not all it could have been, and we extend our heartfelt apologies.

Our stay in Tangier was magical, due in large part to our hosts at Dar JAND, Janet and Andrew. Their home is a gem located in the heart of the medina, a fascinating place for wandering and exploring at a leisurely pace. Their knowledge of and enthusiasm for Tangier is contagious. From the just-squeezed orange juice and warm-from-the-oven breakfast breads served on the rooftop terrace each morning to Andrew's personal tours and suggestions for live entertainment we felt like invited guests. Tangier and Dar JAND have jumped to the top of my list of favorite vacations.

When we started looking for a place to stay in Morocco we didn't know how intimidating it could be to explore Tangier on your own. Thank heavens for all the great reviews (5 star) for the Dar Jand B&B. From the moment Andrew met us at the ferry and walked us into the Medina to Dar Jand, we knew we had made the right choice. We were shown to our charming rooms and then to the rooftop terrace to meet Janet and partake of tea (served from a beautiful silver Moroccan tea pot) and tasty cookies. To say the view was spectacular is an understatement. Andrew and Janet spent so much time with us giving the history of the Medina as well as their journey to be here and create this wonderful space. They took us out to explore the streets and alley ways, all the time giving us landmarks to watch for so we could always find our way back to Dar Jand. They were very helpful giving us ideas of things to do and see and where to eat, and were so helpful telling us of the mystical culture of Tangier. Janet did an amazing job creating the interior of Dar Jand - from the wonderful Moroccan paint colors to all the art work. The whole place was eye candy - she did an amazing job. Whatever we needed to know, they were there to provide answers. Our stay was magical! Oh, almost forgot to mention the wonderful homemade biscuits, sweetbreads, and jams served on the terrace each morning. Fabulous! Thank you so much Andrew and Janet, for a lifelong memory.

We had a wonderful time with Janet and Andrew at their lovely retreat in the Medina. We enjoyed our chats on the rooftop patio. Andrew was a great historian of Tangiers on our walks. Janet and Andrew made us feel at home from the moment we met Andrew at our cab. Highly recommend Dar JAND.

Though I don't give 5 stars easily, the attentive, personal, and earnest service we had during our two-night stay in August 2012 is incomparable. Since we actually had only one full day to explore Tangier, Andrew went out of his way to give us a personal tour of the main attractions of the Medina and its surroundings. That tour of and by itself is worth more than the price of our stay. I have always known that Arabs are hospitable people but this American couple beat any. The "Dar" itself is nicely located with a beautiful roof terrace where a delicious breakfast is served. The rooms may be a bit tight or the climb of stairs a bit steep but Andrew helps you with your luggage and offers you any free space outside your room. We actually had the use of the common lounge outside our room which became then a suite! Anyway any tightness in space was overcome by the breadth of their dedicated service to their guests making sure that they enjoy their stay and visit to Tangier. They are the definition of a top personal service.
