Beautiful, tranquil home with three guest suites situated just off the Petit Socco in the historic medina. My husband and I stayed in the Nomade suite on the top floor. Peter, the proprietor, provided great restaurant/sight-seeing recommendations and tips for navigating Tangier.

a narrow street with a slight incline. a past. a present. facing dar 23. ooohhhh and a delightful sigh of yes this is where we should be! i think as the door opens. lovely this is. art. timelessness. wonder. ever present morocco. funky chic. tasteful. books galore of masters from a glam world of devine fashion. music to transport the soul. a beauty of a rooftop garden. exquisite plants. a great touch of nature that finds its way throughout the dar.

and the beautiful people so much a part of this wonderful space. peter, though we did not yet meet, could not have been a more gracious host. helpful from the start. before we even left for morocco, hints of this and that to recognize and see. ever present throughout our stay at the dar though he was not around. answering questions immediately. and mohammed to help us with our bags. to show us the way. and though throughout the dar be there treasures to see and touch, the best of all is najat. a true gem. her cooking is superb. the food is absolutely to die for. and ever so memorable. to this day i can taste her wonderful creations. truely a gift!!!!

don't dally. don't change your mind. this is where you should be. the rooms are spotless. the lighting is moroccan:) the house is splendid. comfortable. current. cool.... so tangier cool.

Peter's home, Dar 23 is quite simply one of the loveliest places you could possibly find to stay in Tangier. The location is perfect, in the heart of the old Medina, but is an oasis of calm as soon as you enter. Peter and his team are caring, thoughtful and 'there' for you, whether for breakfast on the terrace, Arabic translations, bottles of drinking water, not just 1 but 2 wifi connections! Rooms cleaned immaculately each day, luggage carried to car...everything! Apart from all of that, Peter is a joy to spend time with, warm, friendly, discreet....why would you stay anywhere else!?

Dar 23 is everything it appears to be from the website: a spacious, comfortable house in the heart of the old Medina, just a few steps from sights like the Petit Socco and the American Legation. Your stay here will be the highlight of your trip.

The staff is simply superb. We visited Tangier as the last stop on our two-week second honeymoon, and prior to our departure, I emailed Peter (the owner) about whether he could accomodate special requests because of some allergy issues my wife suffers from. He responded immediately and graciously, and assured us he would take care of everything -- and he lived up to his promise. We had no problems at all.

Peter and his assistant, Mohammed, met us at the port outside the customs building, with a cab ready to take us to Dar 23. Our room (the "Nomade" room) was ready when we arrived, and once we had settled in Peter had prepared some mint tea for us and sat down to go over our plans for the coming days. He provided us with several suggestions for places to eat in and around the Medina and the Kasbah, and his suggestions were 100% on target -- exactly the kind of dining experiences we were looking for, at prices that fit our budget. In the mornings, he prepared wonderful breakfasts. When our visit was over, he arranged for transportation to the airport, and Mohammed took our bags down to the cab.

If you're planning a stay in Tangier, you owe it to yourself to check out Dar 23. The location, the property, and most of all the people make this one of the finest places you could hope for!

Room Tip: If you have issues with stairs, you will want to ask for a room on the lower floors -- the climb to...

Dar 23 hits all the right notes for a visit to Tangier. It's location is ideal within the Medina - right off the Petit Socco, and a 5-minute walk from the Grand Socco. Peter, the owner, is hospitable and charming, along with Mohammed, Peter's staff member, who fetched us from Cinema Rif to guide us to the Dar. The house is a typical dar, designed with a modern touch grounded in classically good taste. We always looked forward to returning "home" after exploring Tangier. Peter's breakfasts were excellent - healthy, fresh, bountiful and delicious.

Our room, Nomade, was quiet and comfortable, and offered sufficient storage for the time we spent at Dar 23. Plenty of hot water, fine linens on the bed, bottled water in the room, excellent mint tea was offered at any time. Peter was always available for information on Tangier, and directed us to a great little stall on the Grand Socco for harira. He also arranged a guide for a tour, and upon our leaving Tangier, he arranged for a taxi to drive us to our next stop. We felt well taken care of at Dar 23.

We stayed in the Ebene room for one night and were delighted with both the location of the property as well as the hospitality (decor doesn't even need praise, the website is spot on and everything is as lovely in person as in the photos). We were greeted at the ferry port by Mohammed and escorted back where we were welcomed with mint tea in the sitting room. Unfortunately the owner was not able to be in residence during our stay so we did have some language challenges as the wonderful staff speak very little English and our French and Arabic are rudimentary, but we managed to get points across in a muddle of three languages and hand gestures. The breakfast was light, fresh, and entirely delicious in the morning and they did allow us to keep our luggage behind while we spent a few hours in the medina before we caught our return ferry. As a point of advisement, the hot water takes quite a bit of time to get up the pipes but never fear, it is hot and plentiful once it does! I fell completely in love with Dar 23 and would (will!) return in a heartbeat.
I will offer one criticism and that is that there was heavy cigarette smoking taking place in the evening downstairs in the residence quarters, it drifted up into the sitting room where we were relaxing and using the WiFi which does not reach up into the rooms. Aside from that however, we had absolutely no concerns about our stay.

Wish you had a your own private, stylish retreat—think Christian Liaigre meets Albert Pinto, mixing a minimalist and orientalist aesthetic—in Tangiers' heart? Then try Dar 23, it will comes as close as possible to that reality. Just off Petit Socco, this house offers two rooms for rent, each with their own bathrooms, on the upper floors of a classic medina house. Nomade, being just under the terrace from which there are gorgeous views of the medina and the Straights, is the most brightly lit. Ébène, just below, has a larger sitting area, and overlooks a cute lower terrace with potted plants, through which guests of Nomade go as they ascend to their room. Both rooms feature ample storage. The bottom floors of the house include a living room and a kitchen (not to be used by the guests). There is also a small alcove bedroom on the ground floor, but without a bathroom, and just a curtain for privacy, it is used mostly for children, or when people rent the entire place to themselves. Unfortunately, Peter the owner was traveling during our stay, and since most people praise his welcome, we were a bit disappointed, but the couple who keeps the place, Nedjat and Mohamed, took good care of us and answered all our questions. I appreciated that Mohamed went to meet one of us at the train station, which is quite far from the center and is the scene of petit-taxi mayhem when the train from Casa arrives. We felt safe at all hours in the medina, and appreciated that its cosmopolitan people are used to see foreigners. Actually, it is obvious that Tangiers is quickly regaining its rightful status as one of Morocco’s top destinations. A perfect base to explore a region rich in cultural sights and natural attractions.

Room Tip: Nomade is the best room, but both are great.
