This visit combined gardens, stork-viewing, a Roman site, as well as medieval structures. Quiet, peaceful inside monumental wall and gate.

I would urge anyone who is staying within striking distance of Rabat to visit Chellah. As well as containing Roman ruins, it is also the site of the old city, abandoned 850 yars ago.

The site is much larger than we anticipated. There are many beautiful trees, shrubs and flowers, some of which are deliberatedly planted, others are growing wild.

Chellah is also a haven for birds. Many storks nest on the high walls, and on the old mosque minaret. It was mating season when we were there, and the air quivered with the clicking of stork bills, and also the song of many other species. Some, including blackirds, great tits, wrens and chiff chaffs, we recognised, but there were some others, such as bulbuls which were new to us.

I would advise people to come early in the week; we were thankful that we did, as the place was very peaceful. Chellah gets very busy on Fridays and at weekends.

I would also advise people to sit in the long garden low down on the extreme right-hand border of the site.

we spent the day walking around Chellah. it was very beautiful and a lot of fun, even for my children. We took a lot of pictures. Our guide, Abdou knew everything by heart and was very helpful. If you are in Rabat definitely visit Chellah.

The Chellah can easily be done in the same day as the rest of the city. The views of the river valley are beautiful on a clear day and the ruins are so-so. The site has a few restoration projects in various states of (in)completion but for the price of 10MAD, it's worth a stop.
