“Come for the Ruins, Stay for the Storks!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2013

I love old roman ruins, and travel the world to see them. This was a gem to stumble upon in Rabat. Though not large, the red hues of the Islamic walls and old Roman ruins were stunning against the blue of the sky and the green of the olive trees and grass. The big surprise was the hundreds of storks nesting on top of all of the buildings. Serious stork sightings. Come for an hour or two and just wander around. No need to pay for a guide, but you will be approached by many wanting to fulfill this service for you...for a price.

“A gem -0 a must see”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2013

I've always loved romantic ruins - and the Chellah rivals the best. At the edge of the city a mixture of Roman and Islamic Ruins - and storks galore nesting on the rooftops. I have been here 3 times over 20 years and it has always been quiet and dreamy. Even the security has a very light touch. And the cats add to the grace and beauty. Don't miss it

“Extraordinary”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 14, 2012

Chellah was our favourite place in Morocco. The owner of our riad talked about it with this special sort of dreamy quality - she talked about the atmosphere, without being able to describe it - and when we arrived we understood. It mightn't be to everyone's taste - after all, it's just ruins, with no signposts to tell you what you're seeing. You can hire a guide, but I think that would be a mistake. We were there on an empty December morning. We were adopted by a friendly young cat, who accompanied us all through the ruins. We saw walls, minarets, storks, lemon and orange trees, trumpet flowers, more cats, ruined baths ponds fountains, faint tiling, the remains of graves, arches, gates, columns, the bottom half of a Roman statue of a woman, rosemary, roses, palms, more storks, stork nests, storks in love, green doors. We could walk and climb over all of it. We brought clementines with us and ate them on a rotting bench (there's nowhere to buy food or water). We spent two and a half very happy hours there, and I took approximately 500 photos. Sunset would be incredible against the walls. We nearly skipped Rabat, and I'm so glad we didn't.

“Really enjoyed this”

Interesting history, uncrowded when we visited with a serenity about it. Storks nesting on top of the dramatic ruins added interest and entertainment.

“one of the highlights of morocco!”

impressive ruin, small price (10 dirham): it is located in a nice park, where roman remains are still present.
