Fascinating ruins - a combination of Roman and Arabic. We found no need for a guide and, as so often happens, watched the tour groups being given the "once over lightly" tour by their guide and hurried on to the next site.
At the bottom of the ruins there is a lovely walk through beautiful gardens which leads to a very nice lookout over the surrounding countryside. We had our Rough Guide with us and there was plenty of information in it to make this a very happy visit.
Afterward, we decided we could walk to the Imperial Palace and that was a huge mistake. First of all, it was much farther than it looked on our map and then, after going through the police check point, when we finally reached the palace, we could only view it from a distance. I got too close and an army officer waved his AK 42 at me!
I'd recommend just taking a taxi back to where you are staying after you have visited the Chellah.
