I was in Morocco for ten days & this was by far the best hotel I stayed in. It is located in the Ville Nouvelle which means you'll have to take a cab to visit the main sites. This is the only drawback. The staff was courteous, spoke English, and proved to be quite helpful. The room had sound-proof windows--a rare luxury in this noisy country. I was very comfortable and almost sad to leave.

This hotel was our second choice in Meknes after the first we went to was booked. However, I am glad that we chose to stay here as the staff were friendly, the rooms comfortable, and the atmosphere and decoration was lovely.

The hotel is located 5 minutes from Meknes al Amir Train station and about 10 minutes from the main station which was really convenient. It is very close to the Ville Nouvelle and within walking distance of the medina and all the sights of Meknes.

The staff were fluent in English and French and had suggestions for activities and day trips. They gave us good advice about sights in the Medina and organised a morning trip to nearby Volubilis (roman ruins).

Breakfast was not included in our board but there was a restaurant in the hotel, we chose to visit local patisseries instead, of which there were many. The room was simple but the decorations were pretty, there were plenty of extra blankets and pillows, western toilets, and hot showers.

We enjoyed the hotel and Meknes so much that we decided to stay here for a second night, this was not a problem at all, and we felt very welcome for the duration of our stay.

Akouas is a decent hotel in the ville nouvelle.

Though the outside can appear a bit grim with over the top neon signs, don't let that put you off. Once you enter, you find a nice lobby with very friendly reception staff.

The rooms aren't the largest, but do come with a functional bathroom, including a tub and a good flow of warm water. Both airconditioning (not tested) and heating (nice in january!) are provided. The heating didn't work when we entered the room, but after reporting the problem to the reception it was fixed the same evening.

Next to the downstairs lobby there is a somewhat dark bar, which could cause some noise on the lower floors. Higher up in the hotel, this is no problem at all (i was on the 4th).

The restaurant is a bit dissapointing - it looks fine, but the included breakfast offers only some sweet breads and some pain and jelly. Service tends to be unattentive.

Akouas offers free wifi service, but at this time this only works in the lobby and bars, the signal is too weak to be usable in the rooms if detectable at all.

This is a great hotel with comfortable rooms, a nice bar and restaurant, pool (for the summer), heating (for the winter) and very helpful staff. They helped us to organise day trips at a fair price and were proactive about anticipating and assissting our needs. The service was more like you'd expect from a 4 or 5 star hotel. They did make one recommendation for where to stay in the dessert that went horribly awry but on the whole their service was fantastic.

Great value - It was a welcome relief after moving from a hotel that was freezing and grotty... and for only a few extra dollars.

The hotel looks quite gaudy from the outside and the paintings throughout the hotel are a bit amateurish, but it added to the whole feel of the hotel. The staff are cheerful and helpful. The guide they arranged for me was very knowledgeable and took me to areas I wouldn’t have explored myself, and only took me to one shop, which was a novelty after being in Fes.

The breakfasts are OK, tea:coffee, a Moroccan pancake, piece of baguette and two mini pastries, which are brought to you, there is no buffet.

The rooms are spacious, but sparsely furnished and you can hear the traffic from the boulevard quite easily below. The bathrooms are bit of a let down, the shower leaked water all over the floor and the water was never warmer than slightly tepid at any time. The water pressure was very good though.

  • Liked — The front desk
  • Disliked — No hot water
  • Tips/Secrets — Go to cafe Palmiers d'Aziza, it has a palm tree in a cage, many terraces and is welcoming especially for lone female travellers

The Hotel Akouas is located in the Ville Nouveau of Meknes, just 10 to 15 minutes by foot from the train station. The staff was very helpful and the room on the 7th floor was clean, whereas the bathroom was o.k. The breakfast and the restaurant are overpriced: Uninspired food and service below average. The hotel regularly hosts bus groups, some from Eastern European countries. (Does this explain the poor standard of the restaurant?)
