“Fantastically nice people and a beautiful, relaxed riad.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 27, 2010

We had Riad Lahboul recommended to us by a number of people so decided to head to Meknes and take the cookery course offered and stay the night.

We absolutely loved it. Simon and Mouna, who own it were so friendly and easy going and the best I can say is that they are just perfectly suited to hosting guests in this setting. Their lovely kids are playing in the street and there is a real community feel around the place which just makes you relax and take in your surroundings.

The riad is right on he edge of the médina so is easy to find, there's convenient parking and you have the new-town and médina within minutes' walk.

The riad itself is gorgeous. Traditionally decorated, the courtyard in expansive and comfortable. You won't feel cramped as you can in some riads. We got a little tour and each room is well turned out and each has it's own decor. Every room is en-suite. We chose a room on the 3rd floor, by the terrace, which has great views of the Atlas Mountains and is a great place for chilling with a beer or wine in hand.

The cookery course was great fun. My wife and I cooked along with Mouna, creating a number of traditional dishes which we then are for our evening meal (with wine!). Mouna was full of top tips and made the day fun and relaxed. The course wasn't technical, just laid back and soulful - just like Moroccan cuisine.

Mouna also took us round to the neighbourhood bakery (a communal oven where people of the neighbourhood take their bread, biscuits or anything else which needs baked and the man who runs it fires it all into a massive wood-burning stove) which was great to see. She and Simon also offered to walk round the médina with us to make sure we went to the right stalls and got the best from out trip.

If you head to Meknes, which is well worth a visit - tourism hasn't quite kicked in here so it hasn't lost what Marrakech unfortunately has - I'd highly recommend Riad Lahboul.

We found this wonderful gem of a Riad via the internet and were absolutely delighted with our stay. We were welcomed and treated like family by Simon and Moona and our accommodations could not have been more pleasant and comfortable. The Riad is beautiful, the rooms authentically appointed with Moroccan decor, quiet and very clean. The icing on the cake was the extent to which Simon and Moona extended themselves; from graciously making extra room for a second daughter to join us last minute, to a World Music dinner Concert at the Riad for their guests, to a special trip to the local hammam with Moona and little daughter Selima. We wholeheartedly recommend Riad Lahboul and hope to someday return!

Stayed at the Riad for 7 nights in march, attending a Bellydance and drumming workshop held there.
After a little chilly start due to a very unusual electricity outage and therefore no heating in the rooms for the first still cool march night everything went really well and I had a great time! The hosts Simon and Mouna are very caring and always available to help or advice.
The Riad is full of wonderful mosaics, decorations and handmade furniture and every day one discovers more details. After having been up to the Medina and the "grand Place" it is a pleasure to return to the cleaner air of the Riad and the tranquillity in the little alleyways around there. Would stay there again!

A great atmosphere, really friendly & helpful staff ina family run traditional Riad. Off the beaten track, but a real gem. Simon met us at Meknes Station as we flew into Marrakech and caught the train from Marrakech to Meknes, which was a comfortable but 6 hr train journey and really cheap too, 1st class was just £22. It was well worth the journey though. I was here with a friend for a belly dance course and it was great with Simon doing the drumming. We also visited the local traditional hammam and that was a real experience. Food was great, real home cooking. Mouna, Simon and Senna were so attentive and worked so hard and gave us their full attention . We did some dancing on the terrace one day which was an excellent experience. I only wish that I had brushed up on my French a bit as there was very little English spoken in the town. shopping & food was very cheap & bartering is an experience.

The owners, Simon and Mouna, have found the perfect compliment to a friendly and welcoming city, by being freindly and welcoming. The riad is beautifully designed and decorated, which you could look at for hours, with a luxurious feel to it. It has a great tiered terrace with a lovely view of the pretty public gardens across the road. Simon and Mouna organised a great guide to take me to Moulay Idriss and Volubilis, who was informative and easy-going along with being multi-lingual (I counted 5!). Having originally intended to stay only one night, the chance to eat another delicious breakfast (I defy anyone to finsh it!) and explore this laid back town once more was too much to resist. A perfect finish to my Moroccan experience.

We stayed three nights to visit Volubilis. The rooms are very very high standard; ours had a wooden 4 poster carved in trad style. En-suite excellent and comfortable. Loads of hot water! Main rooms all old mosaic; have to be seen to be believed. We ate there each night as the food was traditional and the tastiest and best we had in Morocco. Our trips were organised for us and all went well. Ask for the wine tasting! Simon and Mouna are great.

We stayed in the riad with simon and moona and their kids for a few days at the start of september while on a music project in morocco. Had a wonderful time and their hospitality was everything you could hope for. the place is decorated by local craftsmen and done with a lot of love and good taste. right next to the beautiful public gardens in a quiet part of the old town, it has amazing rooftop terraces, next to a local hammam, and yet only a short walk from the heart of the city. highly recommended.
