“Not impressed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

I'm only giving this three stars, because we had better meals in Marrakech at much less cost. The restaurant is known for only employing women, from the wait staff to the chefs, which is a rarity in Morocco.

The reason I'm ranking this as average is because the food was the very basic Moroccan selections, in huge portions, that tasted average, but had high prices. The service was also on the slow side. As for ambience, the restaurant is definitely fine dining with a dimly lit, romantic feel. Most patrons are tourists. As for location, Al Fassia is located outside the medina and is not walkable from most hotels. This was a definite downside as we had to get a driver to and from the restaurant.

“Came highly recommended - but was a bit disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2013

I think this once was a seriously lovely restaurant with a grand idea: it's run entirely by women. And that is commendable and certainly one of the reasons why this place is so popular. The service is also very nice, albeit very quick. Our main courses were served within 10 minutes of ordering and it all felt like they wanted to get rid of us as quick as they could. This is probably because the place runs a two session dinner service, with the first lot coming in at 8pm and the second lot coming in at 10pm. Be careful when you book. They might be happy to book you in for 9pm, but you will have to be gone by 10pm, when the 2nd service starts. Rather book a table that corresponds with their predetermined slots, i.e. 8pm or 10pm.
After all the fuss in a whole range of travel guides, I was personally a little disappointed by the food as well. Although my lamb tagine with prunes was seriously excellent, I did not understand why I was served couscous with it - tagines are supposed to be eaten with bread, not couscous; and they don't really go with couscous either, so I sat there a little confused. I was also disappointed that the bread that was offered was not home made bread, but rather average white bread, especially as bread is such a central part of maroccan cuisine.
Also: Try looking around for a maroccan face - you won't find any sat at the tables. The entire restaurant is in the hands of foreign tourists.
I also felt is was quite pricey (main course is around 120 dirhams - about 50 more than your average Marrakech restaurant) for what it was. 10% tip is already added to your bill at the end as well.
Overall, the actual main meal was good (if you forget the couscous and replaced it with home made bread) and service was nice, but felt a bit rushed, plus I missed the maroccan faces (they probably can't afford to come here).

“Great food, great atmosphere and great value.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2013

So good we went there 3 times on our 5 day visit. Twice we had to be flexible with times as they were completely booked, so ended up eating much later than we are used to. But always left feeling it was worth the wait!

“Good Moroccan food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

We've eaten at this well known restaurant on 3 occasions over the past 5 years and on each occasion have not been disappointed. On our most recent visit, we arrived early to get a table of our choosing and were the first to order and so our service was very good. Food was up to the usual high standard and portions were good. Locally produced wine is on the expensive side (> 200 dirham). Our only issue was that our waitress really did not want to "engage" and we saw ourselves as just other group of tourists passing this time honoured establishment.
