“Friendly and clean”
Reviewed May 1, 2012

In this place your are welcomed more like a friend to a family than as a hotel guest. Anouar and Kabira did really everything they could for our comfort. The rooms are on the small side (the only reason for scoring very good and not excellent), but tidy, well kept and impeccably cleaned. Food (including breakfast) is really good. After a few days of getting lost in the Medina, we realised how fast you get around to places and that Ben Slimane area is a good starting point for most excursions in town. If you are not on a budget, don't miss nearby restaurant dar Zellij!

Room Tip: Terrace room doesn't get WiFi. Bathtub in La Baignoire can be rather hard to get in and out of i...

Stayed in early March - we couldnt of asked for a better place to be! Although the alleyways seemed a bit daunting at first, we very quickly learnt which directions to head in and easily found our way around. The Dar is situated in a slightly more local area rather than the resorts on the outskirts and tourists places nearer the square. We loved that this place was in a quieter local place. We werent pestered locally nor had any problems with kids hassling us. The closer to the square you go, the more hassle you get. The square itself we only enjoyed in the day as at night it was just too much shouting and grabbing and unfriendly/bordering abuse being shouted at two lone girls just wanting to go get some food! We were properly dressed, were polite but the people round the square just saw 'tourist' and we had monkeys thrown on us, hats put on our heads, henna squirted on us without permission - NOT friendly. However, the peaceful Dar Zaman and its amazingly friendly staff made up for it without a doubt. Plus - the souks and places nearer the local area had FRIENDLY shop owners who honestly made you feel comfy, poured you tea and chatted rather than sold you things. These felt more authentic (they were also much much cheaper too - haggling was a friendlier and jokey banter and you got a much better deal)

The room itself was bigger than it looked in the photos - and it was clean and perfectly suited for us with a safe and plenty of hanging space. Bathroom was lovely and the shower worked well. There it loads of outsidey space, the lounge part on the ground floor, internet space and the rood terrace as well as the central courtyard all make the place feel so homely and welcoming.

The staff were also amazing - so thank you ALL! Hassan, Anuor and Sufyan made us feel happy, safe and relaxed throughout our stay and we enjoyed cooking, drinking tea and relaxing. Peter was exceptionally helpful too and helped us arrange day trips, taxis and also sort out a problem we had. These guys really make the place.

If you are considering Marrakesh as a holiday then you need to seriously consider the Dar Zaman Riad as your accommodation. The whole team are brilliant and can't do enough for you. Peter the owner is very chilled out and helpful, Hassan, Anwaar and Sufyan are exceptional and will do anything for you with a smile. Kabira cooks amazing food and keeps the Riad spotless. They all give great advice about exploring the city and enjoying your time there. The Riad itelf is beautiful and is an oasis of calm in the dusty bustle of the medina. We had the roof terrace room which opened onto the communal terrace area, but with only 4 rooms, its never going to be too busy to leave your door open. Having never been to Marrakesh before, it is a real experience but is not for the faint hearted traveller. The Riad is located in a residential area of the medina itself amongst the locals. Its tucked away through a trail of alleyways which take a bit of getting use to and navigating our way back took a couple of days to get use to. Its about a 15 minute walk to the main square, Jemaa El Fna through the maze of Souks (Market Streets) and you are bound to get lost. This is fine in the daylight, but can be quite scary at night, and we got lost most nights on the way back. The trick is to have 50 dirham in your pocket, the address on piece of paper and to jump in a taxi from the main square to avoid the stress if you think you'd be too worried. The taxi takes just over 5 mins. Having taken the open top bus tours, most of the big hotels are located outside of the bustle of the medina, the Dar Zaman is right in the heart of it and gives you a real Marrakesh experience. Tips: school boy French is useful, pack light and leave lots of space for your many purchaces, go for a traditional "hammam" in the local washhouse, smile but keeping walking when shopkeepers try to draw you in, haggle for everything - start at a third of their first price, drink mint tea, eat tagine!

Room Tip: Roof terrace room gives you more space outside, though others could be sat right outside. Outside sp...

From the superb service to the luxury decor and awesome roof top terrace every part of this accommodation was perfect. The coolness of the courtyard with complimentary mint tea to the sun drenched roof top patio this Riad is an oasis of calm in the hustle and bustle of Marracesh. The breakfast is fresh plentiful and tasty and sets you up for the day. The souks and square are a ten minute walk away wifi throughout was an added benefit. Nothing for these guys is too much trouble their knowledge and tips were invaluable in making our first visit to Morrocco fautless. We ate dinner in two nights and had the best tagine we'd experienced we ate on the terrace which enhanced our experience even more. Recommend you book a transfer through the owner Peter which will escort you to the door. The guys there will give you a map on how to get to the square and back. Yes you'll get lost but this just adds to the excitement. Tip !!! Keep a 50 dirham note in your pocket you can grab a cab from anywhere back to the Riad in the worse case or call the Riad and they will come and find you. The local Hammam is two minutes away and you'll be scrubbed to an inch of your life but boy do you feel clean afterwards. Awesome experience. Fantastic place to stay in a superb location. Tip !! Keep a few sweets in your picket for the kids who will direct you to the Riad when your returning.

Pretty riad well located for seeing old Marrakech. Peter, Kabira & Anour were so helpful. Kabira's tagine was the best food we had during our stay. The whole riad is immaculate & comfortable & an oasis of calm in a hectic exotic location. You will get lost but don't worry about it....! We thoroughly recommend taking the Rough Guide map of Marrakech as we found no other at such large scale. Do let Peter arrange your airport transfers as this makes things so much easier.Wonderful trip with perfect weather in January.

Went in Feb 2011 and had a great time at this very well kept riad.

This riad has a real family feel to it in the heart of Marrakech, and is nice and calm just away from the bustle of the souks.

It was very clean, comfortable and homely…and would recommend staying in a riad for the real Marrakech experience rather than a hotel outside the city walls.

The riad is not easy to find on first arrival so a good idea to email and negotiate an airport pick up with Peter the owner, as we did. Once you find your bearings, and using the school as a landmark, it was easy to find our way back even at night. Although I would agree that the location probably isn’t recommended for single women as its very quiet walking back in the lanes at night.

Marrakech is a labryrinth of corridors and passageways and you are bound to get slightly lost at some stage but that’s part of the fun of it.

Hasan was on hand all the time to help with any requests and advice for us, and Kabira, the cook, was great fun and provided fantastic local dishes.

We independantly organised a driver for a day trip to Atlas mountains. Was good to make stops at the small villages on the way...reminded me of some of the small mountain villages in nepal. Its takes a bit longer, but try and go back the other way, crossing the desert plains and lake, as it offers a very different landscape than on the way there, and some great little villages. We stopped to photograph a mountain farm and got asked in for tea by the family.

Feb/March was a great time to go as the weather was warm, but also there were still snow capped mountains which added to the experience as well.

As a solo traveler I was a little concerned about staying at a Riad. I thought I would be odd man out in a house full of couples. But the staff at Dar Zaman were outstanding at making me feel comfortable. Kabira, the cook makes an amazing tagine (the best meal I had in Marrakech!) and wonderful breakfasts, not to mention a big hug in the morning. Anouar and Achraf the night shift and day shift managers go above and beyond to make sure all of your needs are met, and were great company. Peter the owner is generous with his time and suggestions for what to do with your time in the Medina, as well as day trips. After 5 days wandering around the souks and Djemaa el Fna and the craziness that goes with that, it was nice to walk through RDZ's door to find peace and quiet, peace of mind, and friendly faces whom you knew had your best interest in mind.
