Owner description: Traditional storytelling dates back thousands of years an is an important part of the Moroccan collective memory. However this rich tradition is fading asfewer raconteurs detail rich narratives for crowds in Jema el-Fna’a square. Cafe Clock reinvigorates this tradition by bringing retired storytellers to perform alongside freshly trained apprentices of the craft. Stories in English and Arabic.

“Interesting, depends on when / what is going on”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2014

The food there was definitely above average of your usual toursity quality, although it is not cheap, and can have some improvement. Staff are wonderful and friendly. The story telling was interesting, although if you speak standard Arabic, or English, you would still understand nothing from the haj, and it can go longer than what one who doesn't understand what is going on would enjoy. The English apprentices are not strictly translating the story of the haj, but telling a story in English that is in the same line of the stories (traditional stories). Choices of stories can definitely be improved as well, as some do not translate well in English as it is a play in words in Arabic, and it is even worse through some of the apprentice's limited English. Some other apprentices are definitely picking the art better, but the best performance we have seen that night was through an English lady, but she had some experience in theater so it was all top standards. All in all brilliant place, definitely recommend, but be careful with timing, as we were told twice (called earlier on the day and when we reached there) that it was going to start at 6pm, and we kept waiting for 1.5hrs before it started as we arrived at 530pm, and there is just certain amount of orange juice and tea one can consume!!!

Dear Sam,

Thank you for your feedback and for coming to Cafe Clock. We agree on the importance of our storytelling apprentices to continue to develop their skills and build upon what they are learning. Our program began only four months ago and we take your feedback seriously because we want to tell stories in a way that is interesting and which will encourage a revival of the storytelling among young Moroccans. Finally, we are working to ensure that the program begins promptly at 7pm. Your review is appreciated!

Best,
Cafe Clock

“Lovely”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2014 via mobile

Difficult to add to the excellent reviews already received, suffice to say this awesome little place (which only opened a matter of weeks ago) has a very bright future! A refreshing change from the tedious carbon copy menus which get quickly tiresome at "traditional" Marrakech restaurants. Bright, clean and fresh - you won't be disappointed.

“A true moroccan experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2014

I walked into this café with no idea what to expect! All I knew was that I was going to experience a kind of storytelling that was historically native to the moroccan people. Well, let me tell you, it was impressive, funny and extremely interesting and enjoyable! What a unique way to learn about the history of a people and of one of their traditions!
If you are looking for an authentic, but understandable (as some of the [apprentice] storytellers do a translation in english) moroccan experience, then a visit to Café Clock is absolutely a must! Not to mention, all the people are wonderful! Take the time to talk to them before and/or after the story and you won´t be dissapointed!

“Feel the Culture . . . authentically”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2014

Too often as foreign tourists visiting a country we find ourselves in establishments designed specifically for us but lacking authenticity. Often these places play to our fantasy about a culture from movies or images of a country long since changed and we miss experiencing the rich culture that currently exists. In a fun and inviting atmosphere, Cafe Clock offers a superlative alternative where tourists, expats, and Moroccans can come together to enjoy traditional Moroccan performances in a way that honors history and celebrates the beauty of Moroccan culture as it exists today.

“keeping the heritage alive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2014

Glamorous, Charming and Warm is the way I feel right to judge cafe clock. I personally enjoy the experience everytime I visit . It has a unique character , great service and I am not talking about the food , because you should come and try it yourself !!( the best almond milk shakes and camel burger !!....)
As a Moroccan I am grateful to cafe clock for their story telling project , because it is considered a heritage that has almost vanished from its cultural context . and yet they have managed to bring it back through the real spirit and atmosphere.
