“A true oasis”
Reviewed September 7, 2012

If you're looking for a place to stay with traditional decor, spot-on-perfect hospitality and close proximity to everything then this is it. Riad Altair is beautifully designed with large, clean rooms, a lovely courtyard and an incredible view from the roof. The service that the staff provided made us feel like we were very important people and we especially loved their food. It's set back from the main street and you'll walk through several darkened derbs (alleyways) to get there but after doing it once, we felt it actually adds to the authenticity of the location. The best part for me was being able to exit the intense bustle of the Medina and escape into this genuinely quiet, comfortable oasis. I loved this place and recommend it to anyone wanting to experience old Marrakesh without giving up modern day comforts.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher floor so that you're not located directly off the courtyard.

The service in the Riad is excellent. The location good and the Riad its self is very clean and restful to stay in. A great meals also available on the terrace.
Breakfast each day served in the courtyard, very pleasant with coffee pastries and fresh fruit.
Easy walking distance to the Souk, and many restaurants.
Arrange transport from the airport through the Riad.

Wonderful little inn in the middle of the old city. We were welcomed warmly by the owners and given delicious mint tea upon our arrival. A traditional Moroccan house with a central courtyard, each room is beautifully furnished and private. Our room had a huge bathroom with a great soaking tub. The rooftop is outfitted with very comfortable lounges and is a wonderful place for a morning of reading or to take in the gorgeous sunset. Breakfast each morning was very good and the one dinner we ate at the hotel was delicious. Owners arranged car to and from airport.

My daughter and I have just returned from a fantastic holiday in magical Marrakech. One of the best highlights was staying at Riad Altair.I would highly recommend this Riad as a haven of peace and tranquillity away from the heat and bustle of the town itself.
All the staff were kind, helpful and really welcoming.Yasin's ready smile and great sense of humour was a joy and Abdel's gentle, respectful manner and helpful advice was really appreciated. The riad itself is beautifully furnished, impeccably clean and efficiently run.We are both vegetarians and the chef produced an amazing three course meal for us on the one night we decided to 'eat in'.
If you want to stay in the 'old town' then this riad is the one to choose. It's a ten minute walk from the square along Rue Fatima Zohra, or a short taxi ride. However, don't pay more than 20 Mad for any taxi journey within town. The drivers will try to charge a lot more (up to 50 Mad) and will exploit the tourist.
Ramadan was in full flow while we were there. Not a problem for us other than feeling guilty at having access to food and water while the local people had to go without from 4.00 a.m. until sunset in temperatures exceeding 45 degrees!
If you stay at Riad Altair, you won't be disappointed. Enjoy!

My friend and I arrived on Saturday 21 July which happened also to be the first day of Ramadan and the temperature was 47 degrees. The perfect Riad lies within the Medina and is perfectly placed for walking to so many of the tourist highlights that you have been dreaming about before coming to Marrakech. The road outside where we were dropped worried us a little as looked so poor and we wondered what lay before us. We were taken down winding alleyway and towards a huge wooden door with beautiful knockers and already feeling cool. We were greated at the beautiful entrance to the Riad by one or the loveliest hosts you could anticipate meeting, called Mohammed. In fact there were 3 wonderful hosts during our stay who could not do more for us if they tried. Our wonderful hosts were called Mohammed, Hassan and Abdul. They are all gentle, quietly spoken, knowledgable and gentlemen who do all they can to make your stay the best it can be. We appeared to be the only people staying there for a couple of nights which was amazing as it was if we had hired it for ourselves at so little cost. We were shown all the other rooms available after being taken to our wonderful dream space. Lovely courtyard for very filling and varied breakfast in the cool. The Chef was away but we were told that there was a lovely Restaurant within a Hotel Riad called Maison Arabe which was only 5 min walk away which was a super find. In fact we dined there every evening and would highly recommend this wonderful Restaurant. We were only woken in the morning by birdsong which I love and only very occasionally heard the call from Mosque close to us at 4.00 a.m. There are beautiful rooms to rest and read in and to be cool. You can also go up to the roof terrace for shade and watch sunset and have drinks. We bought our wine etc at Supermarket on first evening and then had wine each afternoon in Courtyard before going out for dinner. We also soaked our feet in plunge pool after walking around the souks that day. Mohamed kindly put all our wine in fridge and bought us the wine in bucket with ice and glasses to enjoy wherever we chose to have it. We had four nights here and it seemed longer to be honest which was a lovely surprise. I felt that I was cheated with having to short a time to enjoy Marrakech but in fact it did not seem rushed and we did a lot considering the heat and made the very best of our time. We would definitely come back again as it was so safe, tranquil and we both felt so peaceful and looked after. Walking away from the heat and madness of traffic outside into the calm, wonderful peace of the Riad we called home for our stay. The breakfasts were a delight and set us up for the day and we took our time to enjoy this part of the day. We will both definitely return as soon as we can to enjoy even more of the hospitality, shopping and excursions that we have yet to do. All I can add to this due to the heat is thank heavens for air conditioning. You can also take some amazing pictures in the Riad, in your room etc. as just so perfect to capture the feel of Marrakech.

Room Tip: The rooms at the top would leave you with more privacy and people not walking past nor being prone t...

Wasn't sure what to expect about the riad or Marrakech. I had an impression that the Medina covered a smaller area and Marrakech was more cosmopolitan.
Firstly the riad. It is a slight walk to the square and souks but nothing of concern. It was clearly loved by the owners and staff. They can't do enough for you and the riad is peaceful. Take time to eat a leisurely breakfast on the roof and then chill out there.
I agree in that I think higher rooms would be better. On the first floor they all appear the same style. Not massive but good quality, cool and individual.
It's good value for money so you can trust the tripadvisor feedback.
In my opinion Marrakech was more african that french - you probably say duh to that but it was just what I was imagining it to be before. I've always wanted to go but to be honest it wasn't as cosmopolitan as I thought - even the new town. If you don't want street food, we found you had to search for nice places to eat. Best to take a guide book as saves trial and error on your part.
Once you get used to the place you don't worry about people 'guiding' you but who claim they are doing it out of the goodness of their heart.
Recommend the place as something different to European city breaks. Recommend the riad.
It's probably the best north african pin in the map as Egypt is out for the moment.

My wife and I were on a 6 day holiday booked through British Airways to celebrate our anniversary of our 1st year of marriage and we could not have asked for anything more romantic! The Riad itself is immaculate (take a look at the pictures) and incredibly peaceful despite being a short walk from the souks and Koutoubia Mosque (7' walk). Once you are there is very easy to navigate back but I would recommend booking the airport transfer directly from the hotel since the driver will take you straight to the door without the hassle of having to hire a guide (the transfer is priced at 170 Dhs and is also cheaper than a hiring a taxi). Rooms, patio and terrace are superclean and very tastefully decorated. We had dinner at the Riad in the first night and we were so amazed by the quality and presentation of the meal that we dined at the Riad during our entire stay; the food is top quality and at 220 Dhs a person for a 3 course menu, you simply can't go wrong. However the absolute highlight of our stay was the amazing staff and especially Yasin with his amazing sense of humor and Abdel, who kindly offered to open a room for us to shower and change before heading to the airport after having already checked out from our room.

Room Tip: Please choose Deneb room in the first floor. It is directly opposite the stairs and nobody passes...
