We stayed at Riad Merstane for two nights. One at either end of our whistle stop trip to Morocco and found it to be one of the best places we stayed at. Hidden in the northern section of the Medina, it's a little off the beaten track but all the better for it. Walking to and from the Riad gave you a real opportunity to experience Medina life, slightly away from the tourist hustle of the main souk. Just outside of the Riad is the local market and local kebab stalls, excellent for a quick snack or to purchase some spices.

The Riad itself is beautiful, authentic and really relaxing. It's laid back atmosphere affects you as soon as you enter and it felt like home away from home. Rachid and the staff were super friendly and went out of their way to assist, advise or just chat.

I couldn't recommend this place enough.

Have no doubt, this place is worth staying at. Calm, helpful, homely, just beautiful in every way. Lovely breakfast, gorgeous roof terrace, close to the main square and second to none hospitality. Although if you're a light sleeper then the 5am call to prayer may not be to your taste, but then you shouldnt be staying so close to local culture if you arent prepared to accept it wholly. But if you're in two minds as to whether to book this riad or not then definately do it!!

We stayed at Riad Merstane in the Jasmine room for few nights from the 5th November 11. The building and the rooms are stunning and the house manager (Rachid) and cook were really friendly and took really good care of us, making us feel welcome in the city. The location is good, the souks are a 10 minutes walk away (ask for Rachid's map!) and the square about 20 minutes. It is typically located down a few dark and windy alleyways but once you have mastered your sense of direction it is easy to find from the busy Bab Taghzout. We did not eat dinner at the riad but had a good (and large!) traditional Moroccan breakfast everyday. Overall it was the best experience we could have hoped for - we highly recommend.

Room Tip: We took the Jasmine room upstairs which is beautiful with an en suite shower - if you want something...

After following the taxi driver down a small maze of alley ways and wondering where on Earth we had booked, we arrived at Riad Merstane and were blown away by the sandalwood-scented beauty and tranquility that lay behind the doors. Riad Merstane is a classical Moroccan riad which is owned by a British couple (Alan and Kate) but run by a Moroccan manager – Rachid. The riad has been restored to the very highest standards while keeping all the original fixtures and the traditional pastel-coloured walls.

The bedrooms are set around the central, two storey garden courtyard dripping with bougainvillea and jasmine. Appropriately, our room on the first floor was called Jasmine and was absolutely beautiful with a draped four poster bed, wonderful en suite bathroom and cane easy chairs on the verandah outside. It's the sort of room that I would consider to be 4 or 5 star in a hotel. Further along from our room was a lovely sitting room with a library of books, a really good wifi signal, a CD player and a huge wood burning fire which we certainly didn't need while we were there.

For our first night we had pre-ordered dinner and the riad cook, Rashida made us a fantastic three course meal including stuffed aubergines, a fresh garden salad and a sardine tajine which we ate in the candle lit courtyard and which I can honestly say was one of the best meals we had in Marrakech and at £16 each, incredibly good value. Rachid ordered a bottle of red wine for us and we took it up to the roof terrace after dinner to enjoy the sultry night air.

Rachid was like our own personal guide to Marrakech. He took us into the souks and medina, showing us the way on a hand drawn map and leaving us his mobile number so we could text him if we got lost. He booked taxis for us, advised on our travel plans to Essaouira and into the Atlas Mountains and he even bought our bus tickets to Essaouira for us. I don't think you'd get that kind of service from a hotel and for the price, it's hard to imagine how you could get better value for money.

After full days exploring the palaces, museums, gardens and Jemaa El Fna square, we always arrived back at Riad Merstane to be greeted with fresh, hot mint tea and almond pastries served with smiles in the perfumed garden courtyard - bliss.

The ensuite Bedroom was very well furnished and spotlessly clean most comfortable.
The location was ideal easily accessble to all the amenities.
The staff,Rashid,Rashida and Sakina were very helpful, friendly and did everything to
make our stay memorable. The meal was just fantastic I strongly recommend it. We were there for 8days and thoroughly enjoyed the calm, serene Riad after the hustle and bustle outside especially sipping wine on the rooftop.I must say that the Riad was in every respect just delightful.

The Riad Merstane is set in the northern part of the "medina", or old city, of Marrakech.
We stayed in the honeymoon suite, and there were 3 or 4 other suites available. Ours was perfect.
This riad, a traditional Moroccan home, has been lovingly redone in the Arab manner, and has a wonderful central courtyard which is green and pretty. All the rooms, on two floors, open onto balconies overlooking this courtyard. There is also a roof terrace, with sun loungers etc.
The best part of this riad are the staff. Omar picked us up at the airport, and Rachid, Rachida and Sukeina were there every day doing all they could to help ensure we had a relaxed stay. Their cooking and hospitality was great, and nothing was too much trouble for them. Rachida even arrived one afternoon with a present of traditional slippers for my wife, after she had commented on Rachida's slippers that morning. Rachid knows all the usual tourist attractions and has an opinion on each, and his map proved rather useful in the alleys and lanes surrounding the riad.
We spent a most enjoyable 5 days at this riad, and it proved to be a haven of peace and calm to which we eagerly returned after every outing.

Located in the north of the medina, this cosy, intimate riad is a perfect place to stay. Situated half way between Jma 'El Fna to the south and the new town in the west, either destination is a fair walk but it doesn't matter as there are always new things to see on the way. It's part of the Marrakech experience. You don't need taxis.

The owners - Kate and Alan, and their house manager - Rachid, are pleased to assist or advise in any way you may require of them so there is never that horrible feeling of being hung out to dry in a strange and faraway place. You are among friends.

Eat out if you will, there is an amazing array of choices in the main square, the new town or down small, easily overlooked side streets - but don't forget to eat in (by arrangement) too; Rachida or Soukyana will prepare a superb meal for you!

Leave room for the complementary mint teas and cakes that help refresh any parts worn down by a hard day's sight-seeing when you return in the evening; a perfect end to the day!

Room Tip: All rooms described on the Riad's website.
