“Great Place for an exciting but relaxing break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2008

At the Dar Charkia you will be taken care of from the minute you make your booking. Lisa and Michael go to great lengths to ensure everything is arranged for you from booking trips and restaurants to looking after you in the Riad. This place is not some impersonal five star hotel, it is a small, friendly boutique hotel.

The Riad is very well located in walking distance of all the major attractions and is an easy taxi ride to the nice restaurants in the new town. Lisa & Michael have renovated this distinctive old property with great care and immaculate taste. It is beautiful and comfortable for its guests. The welcome you receive is really friendly and nothing is too much trouble for the staff.

We really enjoyed: -
• Our City tour with Marco the guide used by the Riad and also the trip with him to the Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou (a long drive)
• Chez Pascal – an excellent French Bistro
• Our night in at the Riad with an good meal and a bottle of wine in front of our log fire in our room
• Essaouira – a great place to explore as a day trip

Things to watch out for: -
• People in the street telling you they are from your Riad and trying to get you to their friends carpet shop
• Taxi drivers telling you the restaurant you want is closed and you should go to their choice of somewhere else instead.

Second visit to Dar Charkia. Came back with a different group of friends after a fantastic birthday celebration here last year. Just as good. Just as friendly. I love Marrakech, and I love this Riad. Just don't tell everyone!

  • Liked — Location. Staff and service. Excellent.
  • Disliked — If could add one thing, it would be wifi internet. Not everyones cup of tea I know, and I realise that it's not a 'business hotel' but useful as an option if one was staying for a while.

I took my younger daughter to Dar Charkia (on the personal recommendation of my older daughter) for a rest and some quality time together. We were made to feel very special from the moment we arrived until we left 4 days later. The riad is spacious, beautifully and artistically furnished throughout, and all the food we had there was freshly cooked and superb. Lisa and Michael were friendly, helpful, and gave us plenty of excellent advice and recommendations for eating out and shopping without being pushy. They and their staff couldn't do enough to make our stay a real treat.

The riad is perfectly situated close to taxis and within easy walking distance of the souks.

If I ever go back to Marrakech I wouldn't hesitate in returning to Dar Charkia.

Dar Charkia is a haven of comfort and quality only a short walk from the souks and Dar El Bacha in Marrakech's Medina. The owners (Lisa and Michael) offer a friendly welcome and help you plan days out and useful advice. They are always on hand for any tips. The rooms are all en-suite and beautifully decorated. Dar Charkia is a must for anyone looking for somewhere to explore this fascinating city from a central yet luxurios base.

We visited Dar Charkia for 5 nights back in September and I’ve been meaning to type up our experience ever since. Anyway, we arrived on Friday evening having travelled by train from Tangier and were immediately greeted with a much welcomed gin & tonic. The annotated map Lisa provided during a brief introductory chat was most welcome for a first-time visitor, with prime-routes marked on it, the best cafes, bars and restaurants marked on. Through-out our stay our hosts Lisa & Michael were there if we needed to use the benefit of their local knowledge, or just to chat, but they were happy to leave us alone if we wanted as well. The staff were also excellent – friendly and efficient but discreet.

Breakfasts were excellent, with a differing selection every day in generous portions and as much coffee as you need. The meal we ate on our first evening was also one of the finest we had in our 8 days in Morocco (the lamb tagine!) … but if you’re their for a few days you must ask them to book you into the nearby Lotus Privilege – one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had.

The room was excellent, clean, spacious, air-conditioned when needed, great bathroom.

I really can’t find any negatives – we’re definitely staying here next time we visit.

... I should also add if you're worried about visiting during Ramadan - don't be! You maybe have to plan ahead a little bit more if you want to eat at certain restaurants, but there is certainly no shortage of places to eat, in the evening or daytime. The atmosphere in the evenings is great after the fast has ended, plus you get to experience Ramadan-rage as slightly tetchy locals have the odd shouting match in the street!

  • Liked — Friendly welcome, lovely place to come back to after a busy day
  • Disliked — Nothing!

We spent five nights at Dar Charkia around our wedding anniversary and it was fantastic in every respect. The Riad itself was beautiful and we felt totally relaxed as soon as we arrived. Our bedroom was spacious and comfy with a fab deluge shower. There was plenty of space to relax around the courtyard and on the roof terrace and we were encouraged to consider the Riad as a home from home - if only my home had such lovely decor !
The breakfasts were delicious and varied and the evening meal we ate also excellent -and plentiful. The staff were efficent ,discrete and always helpful.
Lisa's advice on places to visit in Marrakech, and the surrounding area, shopping and restaurants was invaluable. She had sent us recommendations prior to our trip and put a lot of effort into arranging our itinerary which we really appreciated as we enjoyed some fantastic experiences during our stay. (Ask about Bab Ourika - fantastic.)
Overall , we found the Riad itself and the service offered by Lisa, Michael and the staff exceptional and would recommend it to anyone

My husband and I booked Dar Charkia for a few days either side of a trekking trip in the Atlas mountains. It was a peaceful, beautiful and (importantly!) fun haven just seconds away from the frenetic streets of the Medina. The decor is simple but stunning, but not too over-styled (unlike some of the other Riads we visited). We stayed the first 3 nights in the Khmissa suite which was charming. All the bedrooms we saw were very spacious and airy, with lovely touches such as a dish of nuts and dried fruit, and moroccan baskets which are provided so you can transport all your bits and pieces to the roof terrace for a few hours of R&R! The last 2 nights we were in the Douiria Suite, well what can I say! It's a truly special room, the photos on their website do not do it justice.

From the moment we arrived we were looked after! Michael offered us refreshments and then gave us a candid (and very useful) introduction to Marrakech which included some sound advice such as how much to tip, recommendations on where to eat, drink etc. and a must-have map (although we still managed to get lost countless times!).

We took advantage of Lisa's personal shopping morning and, armed with our list, she managed to find everything we were after and more, and we paid extremely good prices.

We had dinner at Dar Charkia on the first night and it was delicious, we would thoroughly recommend having at least one dinner there.

We both thought Dar Charkia had something special - the personal touches, the attention to detail, the relaxed atmosphere. For example, the stereo and CDs are not hidden away behind some reception desk - they are in the Salon for anyone to browse and play at their leisure. All the guests staying actually talked to one another and some (inlcuding ourselves) even went out for dinner/drinks with other guests - new friends!

Lisa and Michael really make this place but we were also so impressed with all their staff - they really seem to enjoy working for Lisa and Michael which in turn then means they do a superb job.

We will be back!
