What a gorgeous place to stay, it completely takes your breath away when you walk in. The courtyard, roof terrace and rooms are stunning and the staff are warm and helpful. The riad was in the perfect location, tucked away from all the hustle and bustle. We will definitely be back

My wife and I have just returned from a most marvellous stay at Dar Charkia and I was surprised to read a previous review concerning the feeling of being "hemmed in" and "pressurised" to book restaurants. I feel it important to see the other side and state that to access this beautiful Riad one needs to enter via a labyrinth of dark, narrow alleyways and therefore to issue front door keys to all guests who may only be staying a day or two is asking for trouble; keys get lost, mislaid and even not handed back - a recipe for danger and so I totally understand why Michael and Lisa don't issue front door keys. In any event, there is always somebody to answer the door immediately even at night because the Riad has 24 hour service for guests' needs.

It's also pretty unfair saying they guests are pressured into booking restaurants. We were never pressured and only ever offered great advice on where to go depending on what we fancied eating. It makes sense to book in advance - you would do that in the UK for a nice restaurant. The restaurants we chose we would not have been able to get into without a booking because they were completely full.

So, please, don't judge too harshly - just go and try it for yourself and make your own mind up! You will not be disappointed.

We stayed at Dar Charkia for our final few days in Marrakech, and what an excellent place it was. We arrived late in the evening at Dar Charkia after a long days travel from Zagora. We were greeted with a very welcoming atmosphere, with complementary mint tea, in a stunning riad.

The entire establishment is of the highest quality, and a perfect tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of Marrakech. It is hard to believe you are so close to the centre of the medina while you are in the riad.

The proprietors Lisa and Michael, as well as they're staff are first class. They welcome you in as if it were your second home, and provide an amazing service. Breakfast was expectional, especially after the previous few days of traveling.

I cannot recommend Dar Charkia enough. It is one of the best hotels I have stayed in, and I will definitely be returning on our next trip to Marrakech.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Sahara room, which is located in the first floor. An excellent room, massive and wi...

We've just returned after a week's stay at Dar Charkia where we had a wonderful stay. Michael and Lisa were extremely charming and helpful, and their staff are delightful. We really can't add anything else to all the previous great comments - they're all perfectly true - but would recommend that you try Dar Charkia for yourselves. We guarantee you won't be disappointed. The Riad in the heart of the Medina is perfect for exploration and the Souks, whilst the New Town lets you see how Marrakech is developing and becoming chic and trendy. We have travelled the world and seen good and bad but we booked Dar Charkia purely on the basis of previous Trip Adviser recommendations because not everybody could be wrong. Great. We will be going back.

Room Tip: The less expensive rooms are smaller. Splash out the extra few pounds and get a fabulous room.

My husband and I were in much need of some quality R & R and wished to reinvestigate the sights of Marrakech. We had a lovely visit to Dar Charkia some years ago, and wondered whether the riad had maintained its high standards. Well, to our absolute delight, it was as beautiful as ever with Lisa and Michael May recalling our first trip to their riad (we were amazed) and greeted us as if they had known us forever. Their riad is something to behold: extremely stylish but retaining a very warm ambience and the May's knowledge of Marrakech is invaluable to the new traveller. The rooms are spacious, immaculately kitted out and extremely comfortable. Anybody wishing to explore Marrakech in beautiful and affordable surroundings, must stay at Dar Charkia.

Room Tip: Check out the Douiria Suite for that very special occasion!

We had three nights at Dar Charkia and have nothing but praise for the establishment. The staff were pleasant, helpful and knowledgeable. Michael and the staff arranged everything we needed.
First rate in every way. We will return!
