Stayed for just one amazing night at Kssour Agafay, a secret super-lux riad (courtyard house) hidden in the heart of Marrakech's Medina (Old Town). It's a beautifully and sensitively restored building with original 16th Century calligraphy tiles and carvings in many of the rooms.
Having been collected at the airport, driven to edge of the Medina and then guided through the narrow winding streets (while our bags we taken on ahead) we arrived and were warmly welcomed by Abel Damoussi, the urbane and charming owner. A musician softly playing a Ginbri in the corner of the unique first-floor courtyard dining room set the scene for an fantastic dinner. The staff are lovely - really some of the nicest people we've ever met.
We slept in a suite on the top floor and breakfasted in the roof terrace tent views over the Medina and the minaret of Koutoubia Mosque. We then stepped out of the calm and peace of the riad straight into the chaos of the souk for a few hours shopping and sensory overload.
Sadly on this occasion we only stayed one night, but this was a quick weekend visit from London and we had arranged to spend our second night at the sister hotel - the Kasbah Agafay on the edge of the desert with views of the Atlas Mountains.
Cannot recommend Kssour Agafay highly enough. We hope to return soon.
