It's hard to believe that such a beautiful restored traditional Riad - El Zohar - can be hidden amongst the lanes of the Medina in Marrakesh behind a great door in a back alley!!! It was such a pleasure to be welcomed into Alan's (the owner's) home by him personally - what a great character! He imparted a wealth of information to us over mint tea which allowed us to get the best from our short stay - and once we had settled in he personally took us and showed us the best way to get to the Souks and how to find the Riad on our return. One reason we chose Riad Zohar apart from its excellent reviews, was the fact that is well positioned for the Souks and the main square and (so we found out) great restaurants are within easy walking distance.

The Riad has five comfy and traditionally Marrakesh style bedrooms, a plunge pool in the courtyard, a stunning roof garden with many sunbeds and a traditional tented area with sofas for evening drinks - in fact the whole place is 5 star - why would anyone stay in a hotel in this city????

If you only get a chance to stay in one Riad in Marrakesh - this is the one!!!

A big thanks to Alan and all his staff who made our stay truly memorable. Hope to stay with you again!

For a freshman to Marrakech it is pretty daunting when your luggage is transfered to a small battered hand cart at the city gates.
The ensuing walk through the tiny lanes whilst being assailed by all the sounds sights and smell of Marrakeck cannot be underestimated.
Arrival then through the maze at the great oak doo is a surprise, on entering its jaw dropping.
Well was for us "hicks from the sticks"! This Riad has it all and in Spades!
Allan the owner could not be more helpful, he specifically took us back out round the lanes to the main Souk road so we could find our way around, spent time showing us on the map the sights,
An island of great peace and tranquility in such a city was amazing.
Fixture and fittings were immaculate and things like loos showers as good as you could get in any 1st class European Hotel.
Its small (5 letting rooms) all individual but has more than enough space if you want to be alone or join the good humour of other guests,
The 1st floor salon and the Terrace "Bedouin" Tent are pretty damn impressive places to relax and just "be"!n
Generally one can find fault somewhere but really I do struggle here so have no compunction but to give 5 stars

Room Tip: Only 5 rooms but I guess the least best, and they are all brilliant, but the ground floor twin behin...

We stayed at this fabulous Riad for three nights at the beginning of October. I had researched it on TA, and seen the faultless reviews, which led to us booking, and I am so very glad we did.

The property is beautiful, and traditional in all the best ways. It boasts a wonderful roof terrace, offers character filled rooms, and ours was complete with four poster bed. It's location within the heart of the Medina is ideal for visiting the Souks and the best sights of Marrakech.

It is the hospitality at this Riad though that really sets it apart though. Alan and Malika could simply not be more helpful or welcoming. In Alan's words, he wants visitors to "hit the ground running". If, like us, you are in Marrakech for just a few days, he aims to make sure you know exactly what's good, where to go, where's good to eat, how to get around the Souks, what to avoid (in terms of restaurant and attractions that are not so good etc) right from the outset, rather than being left to your own devices and just getting your bearings as you are about to leave.

When we arrived, we sat with Alan and drank traditional Mint Tea whilst he gave is the benefit of his great experience of Marrakech. We set off with maps, recommendations, good advice re the essential haggling, and a feeling of being well informed.

We loved Marrakech and staying at the El Zohar was a wonderful part of our stay. It comes thoroughly recommended.

If you want a relaxed place to stay in a location which means a 5 minute walk to the square, 5 minutes to the Souk, a plunge pool to cool off and a terrace that is to die for. Then look no further. Run by a Brit with Moroccan wife it is ideal. It would be 5 star if they served a 5 star breakfast. But overall fully recommended. Booked via Naturally Morocco which was a very reliable and easy to use travel agency and they knew their business.

Room Tip: No need to they are all good.

Thank you for your kind words, much appreciated.
I agree with you, your breakfast was poor by our standards. Usually guests with special dietary requirements send us advance notification so that we can buy in supplies and advise our staff accordingly. When you arrived in the afternoon and only told us then, we were rather put on the back foot, sorry.
This is the first time we have not been advised and we usually manage to excel.I hope one day you will return and we can show you.

The charming Allan and Malika took us into their little paradise in the middle of the Medina and we felt blessed by the encounter. Though we spent only two nights at their "home", we left feeling we had just visited our favourite relatives. As with many Riads in the middle of the Messina you will need some help finding it, not to mention carrying your bags from any taxi, but it's well worth the journey into the unknown. Once in, Allan takes you in hand personally showing you a bit of the Medina near the Riad so that you can find your way back again.

We loved the decor of our room and the entire structure from the small pool in the center to the terraced area on the roof had a local elegance. The salon on the first floor has an amazing ceiling worth seeing. Take Allan and Malika's suggestions for where to eat, especially nearby the Riad because they do know where to find the lesser-known gems. We did eat in the Riad one night and enjoyed everyone's (including other guests) company, though the food was not consistently exceptional I'm sorry to say. But the warmth of the company and the delicious breakfast made up for it.

Nevertheless, I can strongly recommend Riad El Zohar for anyone desiring a space of calm and elegance within the frenzy of activity in the Medina of Marrakech.

Fabulous Riad in the heart of Marrakech, the photos don't do it justice!

Our group of eight only spent three nights here but we all had a great time.
The thought that had gone into all the extras was amazing. Each room was supplied with all the toiletries anyone would need along with bath robes, big fluffy towels and hair dryers.
The staff were very attentive to all our needs and arranged trips to the atlas mountains and on our last night we had a party complete with dancers and musicians. A home from home feel.

Thank you so much to the wonderful staff that took care of us all.
Can't wait to go back

We only had one night at this beautiful Riad before flying back to the UK, and it's such a shame we couldn't stay longer.

We arrived tired, slightly stressed from post-traumatic rug haggling disorder, and sporting more luggage than we could reasonably pack into our 20kg EasyJet allowance. Fortunately, the warm welcome, tea and biscuits calmed us down and we were kindly leant some scales so we could weigh our spoils and fashion a solution to the "how the hell do we get all this home" conundrum.

We ate out, so cant comment on the food but the breakfast was lovely and eaten by the pool. The Riad is beautiful, with exquisite detailing throughout. Our room was tasteful and stocked with all the luxury goodies you come to expect from this most hospitable of countrys.

Post packing, we spent some time sunbathing on the roof terrace with a cold beer and a sense that after just a couple of hours, this place felt like home.

And in the morning when it was time to leave came the highlight of the holiday for me. Unfortunately, at the restaurant the previous night, we had spent every last Dirham on coffee and tips and in the morning, we were leaving before the owner got in, and nobody else knew how to work the card machine! Cue Morad (apologies if I've got the name wrong).

Magically, from a little cupboard by the entrance, one of Marrakech's famous mopeds was revealed, and at 7.45 in the morning, I sat on the back as Morad fizzed us through the tiny winding streets of the Medina, all the way to the main sqaure and a waiting ATM. HUGE thank you for saving our skin and helping us make our flight on time. And for giving me a great parting memory of the city.
