“Amazing Riad in central Marrakesh”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2008

We have just returned from four days at Dar El Souk and it was everything we had hoped for.The Riad is situated about ten minutes from the souks and the main square (Which must be visited at night )to experience the madness of Marrakesh. Even though the Riad is such a short walk from all the hustle and bustle, once through the door the interior of Dar El Souk is a quiet peacefull retreat. The room was beautiful and the whole Riad was decorated in a traditional style throughout. We only experienced breakfast at the Riad but it was wonderful and more than enough to carry us through until we ate out at night. The staff were very helpful and even though the owners were away we were very well looked after. Please see our photos, hope they help if you are planning a trip to Marrakesh.
Kay and Wayne.

We couldn't have asked for anything more! This riad was a great find and we absolutely fell in love with the place. All the staff were great and the owner was a fantastic host, making sure at the beginning of our stay and indeed throughout that we were made to feel at home. The interiors were fantastic and all the rooms kept to a high standard. Breakfast provided was just right to set you up for the day and lunches were scrummy.. The roof terrace and plunge pool were perfect for those lazy afternoons after the craziness of the souks.
I went with my mother and both of us felt it was the right place to take either friends, family or partners.

Beautiful riad in an excellent location - near enough to Jemaa El Fna but not too close to the craziness, and five minutes from the Badii Palace and the best bar in the city (I'll let you work that out yourself...)

The riad itself is a gorgeous little oasis - beautifully decorated without being too bling or overdone. The honesty bar on the roof terrace is a brilliant touch, especially if you fancy a nightcap after dinner - finding a place for a drink in the medina is a bit tricky.

All of the public areas are beautiful, especially the Berber tent on the roof terrace and the main courtyard and traditional Moroccan pool. Although don't expect to do much swimming - as the name suggests the plunge pool is small and better for cooling your legs than diving in. Like all riads the courtyard pools don't get direct sun so the water doesn't heat up during the day. Hence it is rather cold - although excellent on a hot day if you want to cool down quickly!

Madeleine, the owner, is an absolute star, and her staff are helpful and polite. The only (very tiny) snag is that you may have to be a tad forceful to get the girls to serve your breakfast where you want it - they like you to come up to the roof. Which is not really a hardship...

Perfect - definitely my new home in Marrakech.

  • Liked — Excellent welcome from the owner which sets you up for your entire visit
  • Disliked — With a few of the staff you may have to be firm about having it your way and not theirs

We stayed in the Dar el Souk for 3 nights and loved every minute of it!

Thank you Madeline and staff for making us feel so welcome.

The riad is in the perfect location, close enough to the bustling souks and square yet it is snuggled away down alley ways so is very peaceful.

Our room was the lovely Joutia Zrabi. The little terrace outside was just right for relaxing with a book. The rooftop terrace is a fantastic place for breakfast and to watch the storks flying overhead in the evenings.

I enjoyed dipping my aching feet into the plunge pool after a days sightseeing and bartering in the souks!

We had a delicious meal on our first evening in the riad. The second evening we ate on the square, try stall number one!

If you want to stay in the Medina then we recommend Dar el Souk.

Location - in the Jewish area, excellent access to the Medina. and over priced restaurants such as the Kozybar! Good sightings of the storks from the roof top terrace.Very easy to get into Gueliz as well.
Arrival - You're dropped off in the square where a man with a cart will take your luggage and you walk to the riad. (Negotiate price first!) The riad is situated in the back streets, it felt safe appart from the peski kids throwing stones at you in the evening!
The owner is a charming English lady who does not live on the premises - we still haven't filled in our police forms and I'm expecting to be arrested at any time!
The Room - Situated on the second floor up narrow staircases, no help with the luggage which could be an issue for some people. Room was very basic and split level (about a 14inch step). with a seating area. No tea or coffee facilities. Did have air con.
Service - okay - breakfast was nice and was served on the terrace or outside your room.
The noise levels within the riad are high and if you were unlucky enough to have very noisy guest there at the same time it would be a nightmare.
The Riad looks better in the photos that it does in real life! (Or maybe my expectations were too high?). It does have charm and I'm sure that in my younger days I would have loved it!
Value for money? - Okay I suppose, 2 star rating.
I became disabled after booking the holiday - if I went again I would make sure that the Riad could be acessed by car and that the room was better located. The problem with a lot of the ground floor rooms within riad is that they have very little natural light. It's well worth researching the riad to ensure that you can have a pleasant room with a ground floor plunge pool and garden. There are some and even though they are more expensive they're worth it!
Marrakech - 3 days is enough. The Medina is beautiful but the souks are ful of the usual tourist rubbish.
The tour bus is good as it gets you around the city, you can get on and off as you please.
Take plenty of money - it's a very expensive city, and a French phrase book would be very useful!

We have just come back from three nights at the Dar El Souk and it kept up to its high ratings on Travel Advisor.

The location was perfect - just right for seeking out the bargains as seen on the Apprentice the week before!!! The souk and the main square are only moments away and there are some good restaurants and bars nearby.

The Riad itself is really nice - nice rooms and peaceful terraces and roof terrace. The staff were nice and Melanie (the owner) very helpful. She greeted us on arrival with lots of great advice.

If you are feeling a bit dodgy as I was one day - steer clear of the tannerys - a bit too close on the production line from dead animal to leather for my liking! It was also nice to return to fixed prices and bar codes!!!

Finally the main square in the evening was great fun and always lots to see. Simon Cowell - you need to get down there and make "Marrakesh has got Talent!"

As the title says - fabulous. This was our first riad and we loved it! The location was brilliant - convenient for everything - medina, souks, museums etc but very quiet and peaceful. The rooms are beautiful, the roof terrace is somewhere I could live forever and the staff are wonderful. Madelaine and Iain organised a taxi for us, booked a guide to go through the souks, booked a restaurant meal for us and booked a day tour in the Atlas mountains and to a lake- all great value for money. Of the 3 riads we stayed in, this was by far the best.
The breakfasts were lovely, the evening meal was one of the best we had while in Morocco and very good value for money. We have no complaints at all about this riad and would highly recommend it for all - don't bother going anywhere else. Would definitely stay here again.
