El Fenn

Reviewed December 25, 2007

My boyfriend and I spent a week at the Riad el Fenn in September 2007.

I cannot speak highly enough of the el Fenn, with its beautifully tranquil ambience, exquisite decor and wonderfully attentive staff. Breakfast was superb and offered great choice, afternoon tea and freshly baked cakes were provided each afternoon within the main courtyard. Whilst we ate at a number of restaurants, including Tobsil, Bo-zin and Dar Moha, we chose to eat at the riad a number of evenings and were extremely impressed. Evening meals are on request - not your typical hotel restaurant situation with menus etc.

The riad offers a number of facilities such as a cute miniature cinema , lovely areas/terraces/courtyards for guests to relax, pools, a sweet library and hamman/beauty treatments. Our hamman experience was absolutely fantastic and definately superior to the Bains de Marrakech which we found to be disappointing by comparison.

We booked the hot air balloon trip - a fantastic experience that was totally worth the 5 am start! The riad can arrange this for you if interested.

We felt pampered and relaxed for the duration of our stay and would absolutely recommend the el fenn to anyone visting Marrakech!

This is the first time I have ever left a review post a holiday. I just felt I could not pass up this opportunity to tell others about how superb this riad is.

I have never stayed in anything like it before and I have travelled far and wide. We stayed in Room 19 which only opened recently. It has its own private pool and sunbathing terrace. We spent the mornings wandering around the souks and the afternoons in glorious sunshine on the terrace.

Small details like the tea/ coffee left outside your room at 7.30am, fabulous breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice, homemade yoghurt and muesli really made our stay.

The hamman was a great experience - have you ever had orange squeezed over your head and then rinsed off with rose oil? Worth a try!

The staff were really helpful and polite and couldn't do enough for you.

Don't hesitate about booking this place, it is superb.

I have just returned from my honeymoon in Morocco where we stayed at Riad El Fenn for part of our trip, I have to say I felt that the hotel was one of the best I have ever stayed at and the perfect oasis in hectic Marrakech.

We arrived in Marrakech in the second week of our trip around Morocco and a little weary after Fez and the Atlas Mountains. Riad El Fenn was the perfect place for us, it is not only a beautiful hotel, but goes that extra mile with a library (we'd finished our books by this point), a private cinema (perfect after a long day shopping in the soaks), the loan of a laptop to watch films in bed or check email, three swimming pools, excellent food and of course friendly staff.

This place really made our trip, and we'll be booking to go again soon.

Chic - understated - elegant and blissfully quiet. Filled with interesting other guests, incredible art, and with a "roll with it" vibe. Amazing hammam experience with rosewater and orange juice at the end (drizzled over your head)! New area with pool fantastic. Yogurt at breakfast absolutely delicious. Might not suit type-A personalities or small children who need to be entertained.

Just back from four nights staying at Riad El Fenn. After trawling the Conde Nast Traveller awards and cross referencing against trip advisor and hotel websites, we plumped for El Fenn.

Walking down the narrow side street from where the taxi drops you off, and into the riad from the anonymous side door, you step into another world. You are greeted by friendly staff, modern art and beautiful smelling incense. The riad opens up into two main court yards with fruit trees, quiet fountains, chunky day beds in alcoves and big coffee table books that you never normally get the chance to read. In addition there are two courtyards for swimming pools - each with sun beds, towels, hats and sun screen laid out.

Climb up to the roof, past a long balcony with yet more seating and the quiet panelled library, and you are met with stunning views of the Medina roof tops, more sun beds, a splash pool, and the roof top restaurant. Breakfast is served from 8 until whenever (and they mean whenever), lunch and dinner by arrangement. The set menu changes daily, was always delicious and the service always with a smile. It was great to lounge out on the big seating under canvas and have pre-dinner drinks looking out to the mosque and the Atlas mountains. Dinner here was one of our favourite meals.

With staying four nights we had two bliss days where we didn't even leave the riad - eating, drinking, sunbathing, watching dvd's, reading books - a day out in the Souks (on your door step) and one day on a organised trip up the Atlas Mountains.

Our room (room 2) was stunning... with high ceilings, a deep marble bath, iPod station, blackout for the morning.... it is up there with the best hotel rooms I have stayed in. One evening the riad was almost empty and for a nosey hotel snob this is great, as all empty hotel rooms have their doors open which meant I could have a good look around :-) !!! My view? Well, there is definitely not a bad room. Each is quiet differently styled, beautifully decorated and maintained and any would delight after a hard day haggling for slippers in the Souks.

The hotel was clearly delighting all the guests staying. It is big enough for you to find a quiet corner but also friendly and relaxing enough for you to be able to compare restaurant reservations or the going rate for a rug. Clearly I had been done....

Regarding restaurants, Le Topsil was superb. You are taken from El Fenn by a guide down the side streets and led into a charming Riad for a Moroccan banquet with stunning ambient live music. Le Comptoir and Jad Mahal by comparison, disappointingly Western and soulless. The latter was also the cause of severe food poisoning which was decidedly unpleasant.

The negatives? some mornings the cold water pressure was poor but coming back later it had rectified itself and the DVD player wouldn't play some films (probably vetting our poor taste in films!) and we didn't book for long enough.

In summary. If you are planning on coming to Marrakesh, or if you just want a truly great hotel then book El Fenn. Its mix of laid back style, superb staff, location, massive beds, great food etc etc etc (!!) certainly do make it live upto its name "cool". I absolutely loved it and will be returning.

Excuse the cheasey title but this place is simply the best place I've ever had the pleasure of staying at (and I've stayed at some pretty good hotels and riads too). If you're staying in Marrakech, I whole heartedly recommend staying here. El Fenn boasts beautiful rooms and decor, great, attentive service level, excellent facilities including pools, restaurants, massage rooms, film room and library, superb food and drinks and impeccable cleanliness. A good, central location in the medina too, not to mention the wonderfully polite and friendly staff. There is a lovely calming but vibrant atmosphere around the riad and it's various courtyards. I will most definitely be re-booking on our next trip to Marrakech.

My partner and I stayed at Riad el Fenn in June2007 for 3 nights and it was the most amazing place.

We were so surprised by the riad and Marrakech itself. Totally different culture and as we approached the riad down a dusty little lane and approached the huge door, we didn't know what to expect. But the riad opened up before us and it was amazing.

We had a fantastic time. Rooms were fabulous as is the whole Riad. It
was a very relaxing and ambient place in the middle of busy Marrakech. Food, service, rooms, everything was amazing. I think what makes this place extra special is the privacy you have, the attentive service from all the staff any time of day and the unique experience of stayin in a traditional moroccan riad.

The location is also good and we could easily walk to the main square in about 5 minutes. We were on a relaxing break so spent most of our time just sunbathing at the riad and relaxing so i can't really comment on things to do in Marrakech. Although the main square
is well worth a visit. A very unique and interesting experience. We ate at Le Tobsil, Bo-zin and riad el fenn and we much preferred el fenn.

If you can, then opt for a riad in Marrakech as it was a truly unique
experience that i loved. Def better than any large hotel i have stayed.

I can not fault this Riad in any way and it was worth every penny. we
had such a fantastic time and cannot wait to return.

It was 2002 when Vanessa Branson and Howell James walked into the almost ruined courtyard of one of Marrakech's formerly great private homes. Nearing dusk and with the sound of the muezzin's call to prayer echoing in the air, they instantly fell in love with the atmospheric house which was being sold with three smaller neighbouring homes. They soon realised that their holiday home was going to become so much more.At the time, only a handful of Marrakech's riads had been converted to small hotels and Vanessa and Howell knew they wanted to open a place offering something different - a home from home retreat that combined great food and service with the spirit of the building's past and a contemporary decorative twist. During a two-year renovation, local craftsman used traditional techniques to breathe new life into the building. Polished lime plastering was used in a rainbow of colours to create walls, baths and bed frames, original tiling was renovated and carved cedar ceilings restored. Retro furniture sourced from local flea markets was combined with one-off bespoke pieces to create a unique interior. ... more   less
