“Lovely, peaceful, small guesthouse. Highly recommend!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 1, 2011

We stayed at Dar Pangal for 3 nights in April, and had a very comfortable, relaxing stay. Our host, Salah, was on hand to offer advice and hospitality, but also left us in peace to unwind and enjoy the guesthouse. The breakfast each morning included amazing freshly-squeezed orange juice - a great way to start the day!

Dar Pangal is, as previous reviews have mentioned, about 15 to 20 mins walk away from the Djemma el Fna, and we found this to be perfect! It meant that we were away from the hustle-and-bustle and noise of the square and surrounding area, and were able to wander around the alleyways away from the main tourist area. Walking around the Kasbah at night felt safe, and there always seemed to be plenty of locals out and about at this time.

I stayed here with my 19 year old daughter and had a wonderful time. Julio and Salah were amazing hosts. Salah even walked me to a pharmacy to get medicine when my daughter got a bee sting. It is a little out of the way and not directly reachable by car but it makes up for this with its rooftop views and peaceful serenity in the middle of a large city. The driver dropped us off at an opening in the wall around the city where Salah met us and walked us down the ally to the entrance of the Riad. I admit to getting lost the first time I ventured out on my own but soon got the hang of it. It is located deep in the Kasbah and about a 20 minute walk to the central square. We felt very safe, other than the cat calls my daughter got throughout Morocco, walking to and from the Riad at all times of the day and night. The rooms were small but you really don't spend a lot of time in them anyway. They open out on a central courtyard with birds that wake you in the morning where a lovely breakfast is waiting to be served. Overall it is a wonderful friendly place to stay in the middle of Marrakech.

We saw the other posts on Trip Advisor praising Dar Pangal and this was the major reason we made this reservation. We have travelled the world extensively but this place was abyssimmal. Since we can compare this place with other places we stayed in Morocco, we would rate this place at the bottom of the barrel. We had booked for 3 people. They provided us three beds instead of double beds and a single bed. The beds creaked--they were made of unfinished wood. One bed rushing in the room was about as wide as to lay one person flat on. There was no heating, just a space heater powered by propane gas, so at night you had to turn it off to avoid death my carbon-monoxide. The bathroom had a mirror (a piece of glass with no frame) perched on a 2 x 4 piece of unfinished wood. The bathroom had no door and the lighting throughout was dim. The curtains were made of see through Indian sarees. Instead of bedside tables there were woven baskets. Breakfast was two small pieces of crepes and served with bitter marmalade. There was of course orange juice, tea, butter, sugar and honey. The cook refused seconds on crepes the first day and served us toasted left over bread the following morning and no crepes. For all this we paid 90 Euros/night which felt like a highway robbery. We stayed two nights. The housekeeper said that he may have a better room the following day, but that never happened. We felt that we were staying in servants quarters. As an aside, when you return to this place at night, you are hasseled by teenage boys on the road approaching the property who beat drums on your head and ask you for money. It appears that this was the worst room on the property!Stay away from this place...I am sure you can do better.

Julio and Salal were wonderful and so helpful. They really made it feel like you were at home rather than in a hotel. Location apepars to be far but really isn't. It's simple but really has all you need.

What can I say, the previous review has said it all! Lovely place, Salah was very helpful, and even though it looks quite away from the Souks on the map, it really isn't - a 15 - 20 minute walk.

Overall felt very safe in Marrakech, the locals were friendly and helpful - just watch out for the young boys (10 - 14 year olds) they always wanted to be paid for giving us directions!

arriving at casablanca train station we had the phone number to phone the dar pangal when leaving by train to marrakech,i phoned the riad and told them what time the train would be arriving, there was a driver waiting for us at the train station,he escorted us to his brand new gleaming 4x4 with air conditioning and thank god it had,the heat was terrific, almost 50c and baking hot, after 10 mins drive thru a maze of narrow streets into the medina we parked up and pressed the bell, the house boy, salah, opened the door to a lovely warm smile and welcomed us into the home,my god it was breathtaking,so cool after the blistering sun,and invited us for mint tea, which we had with him in the courtyard,it was beautiful, there are only 5 rooms in the riad, all which was pristine clean, and typically moroccan style with ochre and mustard painted walls, immaculate clean crisp cream bedding, and little wacky finishing touches like wicker baskets to put your smalls into, the owner julio introduced himself later in the day,a lovely mellow man who is originally from chile, speaks perfect english as does salah,he showed us around the riad, obviously very proud of what he had acheived, and very rightly so,when we went onto the top floor the sun terrace was awaiting us,with a place to shade from the sun and also a splash pool to cool off,the lady who done most of the cooking was called latifah and although she couldnt speak english, her warm smile made up for everything, she made us breakfast every morning and made sure everything was ok for us,it consisted of lightly toasted fingers, pancakes, home made marmalade, and as much tea or coffee as we wanted, salah was very helpful in telling us about marrakech, and his cheeky little remarks and smiling face just melted you, always a little laugh for us, and the riad was only about 15 minutes walk into djemma el fna square where it all happens at night, the walk to the square is an experience in itself, passing lots of locals, men sitting outside the coffee shops talking all day long, street children coming up to you and asking if your glass bottle of fanta was empty so they could take it back to the shop and get money for it,people mending bicycles, hairdressers, clothes shops and little everyday item shops,we spent 4 nights in the riad with julio, salah and latifah and it felt really like home from home,it was so safe that we didnt even close our room door when we went out,and on top of all this amazing hospitality, salah and latifah also washed our clothes free of charge, this place is just like heaven in the middle of a very mad, crazy and eccentric city,i have travelled the world and i really havent experienced anything so welcoming in my life,we enjoyed it so much that we have already made a booking to go back at xmas and left them a deposit, and that was before our holiday ended,if you ever get the chance to go to marrakech, dont miss it,it is an amazing place to visit, and if you need a 5 star home from home, please go and stay at the dar pangal riad, you will not regret it,and never forget it,im sure, one thing is for certain,i will never forget it,thank you again julio, salah and latifah for your wonderful hospitality, there is only one thing,we left our tarte au citroen in your fridge, haha!!!!never mind, keep it for the next time salah, hehe!!!!

  • Liked — everything,i cannot fault anything about this place, the (staff)friends all made it worthwhile,
  • Disliked — nothing, please go and experience it,i cant wait to go back, thank you julio, salah and latifah,

We spent 3 nights at Dar Pangal. It is in the medina and absolutely charming. Julio, the owner, and Salah, his assistant, were gracious and helpful in answering our questions. The rooms surround a beautiful courtyard filled with flowers and orange trees. There is another garden on the roof. Breakfast was delicious. Dar Pangal is clean, quiet and in the old city. The 20 minute walk to Djemaa el-Fna Square was always interesting and a great cultural experience.
