“Excellent riad in the heart of the medina”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2014

I have been to marrakech 6 times and dar mouassine has to be my favourite place to stay. I stayed in suite cardamone which was truly wonderful with beautiful carved ceiling. The room spacious, the breakfasts lovely and the location brilliant. The whole of the riad is very clean and the staff can't do enough to help you and are always happy and pleasant. 100% dar mouassine we'll be back next year.

For my 4th trip to Marrakech in the last 12 months, I came with my girlfriend to Dar Mouassine. In an incredibly competitive market like Marrakech with literally hundreds of outstanding places to stay, one does end up comparing riads on increasingly demanding criteria, so at risk of being a little anal here goes...

Location is great - 5 mins walk from Jema el Fna, but far enough from the bustle that it's an incredibly relaxing place. The roof terrace is one of the best I've seen in Marrakech: spacious, and pretty, with a nice view across the city towards the Atlas mountains. Our room (Safran) was cute and comfortable, and we saw some really wonderful rooms there that unfortunately weren't available when we booked at late notice.

A couple of points of feedback for the team:
- I wish we had eaten out: the downstairs eating area isn't as tastefully designed as the rest of the riad and isn't romantic, and the food really left a lot to be desired. Breakfast, after having argued a little to get served on the roof terrace, was average for the city.
- I've experienced some fairly obsequious service in Marrakech riads, often driven by the need to get the edge on review sites. Mouassine was warm, helpful and flexible. Eg no problem checking out at 6pm on the day of departure. However.. despite asking David we did find google more helpful for recommending and booking activities which shouldn't really be the case!

Room Tip: Suite Cardamone is stunning

First of all, we loved Marrakech. The mix of cultures, the vibrant bustle and the fantastic food were all part of a wonderful vacation, but Dar Mouassine was still the best part. We stayed in Room Curcuma, which meant we essentially had our own small wing in the Riad. You have to go all the way to the beautiful rooftop garden, and then down winding stairs to your own patio and room. It was luxurious, quiet and comfortable. We spent one entire day never getting out of bed.

If you get the chance, have dinner in the Riad one evening. Their chef, Latifa, prepared an authentic Moroccan anniversary meal for us that was quite possibly the best dining experience we had during a trip filled with great food.

Then there is the superb staff. They are always smiling and never too busy to help with a dining tip or directions. We took the night train to Tangier on our last day in Marrakech, and, since no one had reserved our room for the next night, they invited us to stay and relax until we caught the train that evening.

We are planning to go back to Marrakech someday, and Riad Dar Mouassine will be the first reservation I book!

Room Tip: Room Curcuma was wonderful, but there are lots of stairs. If you have trouble climbing stairs at all...

What a fabulous oasis in the Medina! Our hosts Guy and Daniel were so helpful and charming to make us feel welcome and comfortable at the Riad. I travelled with my Mother, mother in law and sister and we felt safe and right at home. I would stay here again should I ever come back to Marrakech without hesitation.

We ate at the Riad one night, and although the tagine was not as tasteful as those we have had elsewhere in Marrakech, the first course of dips and flat breads was absolutely amazing. The Riad was great at arranging reliable transport for us when we wanted to explore outside the Medina and up in the Atlas Mountains.

All rooms had aircon and fans - were more than comfortable and large. The breakfasts were tasty and overall we loved staying here. The pool was devine in the afternoon when we had enough looking through the Medina which we were right in the middle of, and very easy to find when coming into Marrakech for the first time. Thank you both so much for such a fabulous stay.

This authentique riad was a highlight of our trip. The location in the aiceint Medina where you can see the real life of its citizens, chariot with donkeys, ladies passing buy to the local oven to bake their bread.. All is very interesting. I would like to say that the service in riad is very attentive, David and Guy were so nice to us, helping in every thing starting from restaraunt reservation ending with the spa activities. Thank you all the staff for the nice holidays.

We estayed there for 3 nights.
It was a really nice and clean place and the owners or people in charge was really kind.
A beautiful place inside the Medina and quite close the markets (sokos) and the main square "Djemaa el-Fna".

Suggestion: Take the taxi that they offer you to pick you up at the airport or train station. It really worth it. To find a place in the old city (medina) the first time is very difficult and kind of risky if it is your first time.

Room Tip: I would suggest to stay at the upper floors because in the ground floor people have dinner.

We stayed here for the last 2 nights of our Morocco trip and wanted to finish on a high note. Its in a perfect location for souks and square, and central medina, and tucked away down a few alleys so really nice and quiet. The bedrooms were wonderful (we stayed in Suite Cardamone), and the courtyard very tranquil with lots of greenery. The dipping pool is lovely as its away from the central courtyard and down a passageway, giving privacy. Its also deep enough for a proper dip rather than just a toe dangle. Breakfast up on the terrace was delicious (one of the better we've had in Marrakech) and we ate dinner one evening which was cooked to perfection. The staff were friendly and helpful.

There were a couple of slight negatives. First, there was maintenance work going on each day, both up on the terrace and around the dipping pool. This meant that relaxing in these areas was just not really possible, although the workers were being as discreet as they could. There were piles of rubble everywhere, and it really spoiled the atmosphere. I do understand the difficulty of keeping these old buildings maintained, but it was still a shame. Perhaps it would have been nice to be forewarned.

Our room was also not the cleanest, with several hairs all over the place and other things that did not belong to us.

The other disappointing thing was the ambience. In other riads we've stayed in (5 more now) the public rooms are usually lit up nicely, inviting and sometimes with music in the background. At Dar Mouassine the public rooms (i.e. the salon, library etc) were kept totally dark, we didn't even know if we could go in them. And sometimes the place felt totally deserted with the usual 'house manager' not being around.

This is a shame as the place is lovely and has the potential to be up there with the best.
