After the bustle of a day out in Marrakech the Dar Doukkala is a great place to come back to.
We stayed over New year 2007/08 for 6 nights, in room 1 which is at one end of the central courtyard.
If you want super cool minimalist design or 5 star hotel luxuries this isn’t for you, but if you want a warm welcome, great home cooked food a good location and the feeling you are staying in a place that cares about it’s guests then Dar Doukkala is a great choice.
The staff were very friendly and helpful, they helped us organize a day trip to the Atlas mountains which I would certainly recommend, they had good advice on restaurants and places to visit.
We ate dinner in the hotel on two occasions and the food was fresh and very well prepared. Especially after a long day of sight seeing, eating at the hotel is a very relaxing experience
I am vegetarian and this wasn’t a problem for them, they prepared Moroccan food on one night and more French/European food on another.
You eat dinner in the lounge where you also have breakfast.
There are big open fires at each end of the lounge which are dramatic and welcome when the evenings are more chill in the winter months. It is a great place to sit and read, talk to the other guests or just relax
The eclectic mix of Moroccan, European, and art deco interior details makes the place feel welcoming and slightly eccentric, as if you are staying in a family home where they have collected things on their travels
The breakfasts are delicious and filling, with varying selections of bread, yogurt, fruit etc.
The roof terrace even in winter catches the sun and gives great views across the city, the courtyard is shady and green and just outside the door to our room.
The space in our room was very good, the ceiling very high and the bathroom had a separate bath and shower, the bath was one of the deepest I have ever had in a hotel, but the toiletries supplied are very basic so remember to take your own shampoo, conditioners etc.
I tried the pool, after being in the steam room, refreshing but very cold! But it would be welcome on a hot summer day

All round this was a great place to stay, it was easy to walk to the centre of town, the Souks, the new town and there is an amazing Moroccan furniture and interiors shop across the street.
I would stay here again.

From the moment we arrived to find dinner prepared for us on a rose strewn table in a secluded alcove in Dar Doukkala's charming courtyard, it was obvious that this was going to be the perfect place to start our honeymoon.

With the entire riad to ourselves for the first three of our four nights, we could have sampled most of the gorgeous rooms, but having booked the palacial Suite 3 the time was barly enough to indulge in all the beautiful features of our rooms alone.

The decor, the food and wine, and the massage, were all superb, and many a peaceful hour can be spent in any of the lovely communal areas, such as the roof terraces, the pool, and the exquisite drawing room. Staff are helpful and friendly, and helped us with booking a hire car and our arabic pronunciation.

After the stress of wedding planning this was the perfect place to wind down to the unending soundtrack of the courtyard fountain, and in the company of the two stately tortoises, and the crazy cat that will pounce on your feet in the night through the covers if you are foolhardy enough to leave a window open.

If you have a decent budget and are confused by the myriad of riads, choose this one. You won't go wrong.

Choosing a riad was hard work but I’m glad I was not tempted by the fashionista decor-mag riads. Dar Doukkala’s style is timeless and sumptuous, an art deco inspired riad with lots of detail – the opposite extreme to fainthearted minimalism.
The building is on a proper street (not tucked away in a dark alley), 15 minutes to the main square and 5 to the souks, in a local neighbourhood buzzing with activity. The rooms are larger than your average riad rooms - we stayed in suite 3 which was at least 90 m² with its own terrace and a bed the size of two doubles.
An excellent choice for those who appreciate gracefully-aged objects and attention to detail - we were still oohing and ahhing after four nights and although we prefer to try new places we can’t wait to go back.
Tip: the complementary toiletries are extremely basic (i.e. soap & shampoo) so bring your own stuff.

we just returned from a four night stay in this riad.we booked it because of the good reviews and locality.at first,we were a bit weary as the taxi stopped.there was hustle and bustle all around.need not have worried, the riad was only a twenty second walk away.having read some reports, people had to walk the crystal maze to get to their riads.we were faced with this large wooden door.it was like walking into another world.the lovely courtyard with trickling fountain.we were shown to our room, suite 6 on 2nd floor and our cases carried up for us by girls even though we insisited we were ok to do it.the suite was totally fantastic, better than we could of imagined.huge bed, gorgeous furniture and a bath that could fit 2 in comfortably.it had small balcony over the splash pool and a large private terrace that we ate breakfast on every morning, which was brought up for us.it was heaven.although not to hot at the time it was comfortable.i bet in warmer months even better as it had lots of space to relax or shade and the splash pool right underneath you to cool off.my boyfriend did try this after a day in the medina,he didnt last long, about 30 seconds as it wasnt heated yet.good fun though.i can not recommend this riad enough to anyone.it was faultless, clean secure, had a safe in the room.the only way to gain access was to knock on the big wooden door and staff would let you in,no matter what time it was.we used the hamman while there, free but you have to give them notice, few hours is usually ok.we also had the scrub and felt great.massage available to.we aslo had a meal at the riad, lovely.the staff just cant do enough for you.the table all laid out for us with rose petals around, delightful.ive never had in my life such a peaceful place to stay while just out the frount door the hectic life of the locals goes on.to sit having breakfast on a beautiful terrace and in view the snow capped atlas mountains is amazing.worth evey penny.we did two trips.the atlas montains, booked through the riad was great.a grand taxi took us there and back for 800dirs.we pre booked lunch in the kasbah, which is set in the mountains,a spectacular view and well worth it but i think you do have to pre book before you go.the other trip we did was to essaouira.a lovely sea side resort, about two and half hrs drive away.also well worth the visit.shopping here was much more relaxed than in marrakech and alot less stressful.lots of seafood tapas at the seafrount which was plentiful and very cheap.we ate like kings for £12 between us.to get here we got taxi to bus station,10dirs and then the bus,65dirs each, each way.well worth it.some taxis will try to rip you off,10 is the norm around marrakech,20/30 of a night.getting off the coach they wait for you trying to charge you 60/70,you just refuse and offer them what they are meant to charge, someone always willing to accept the fare.there is alot of poverty in marrakech, beggers etc.just be on your guard and watch your belongings carefully and you will be fine.we did see a few getting cameras stolen.the square of a night is breath taking.dont think i have ever seen so many people, lots of activity going on for the locals.there are dozens of tapas bars set out in the evening, great to watch the world go by and the madness around you,but do watch your belongings at all times.a fantastic place to go and i would definately go back and would certainly stay at this riad.

What an amazing place to stay. My husband and I had 4 fantastic nights in this Riad over the christmas period, nothing was too much trouble from the moment we arrived to the moment we left.

We stayed in suite 3 and it was incredible, from the size of our bed to the fire place to the music selection on the stereo.

On Christmas eve we found gifts on our bed which was a lovely surprise.

The Riad was only a 10 min walk to the Djemaa El-Fna square and we felt extremly safe.

One night we bought a lovely bottle of Moroccan Red Wine and sat up on the Terrace of the Riad and watched the sun set over marrakech. It was magic.

I would reccomend this Riad to any one thinking of a trip to Marrakech.

Like all the other reviews we could not fault this place. We had a lovely room with air-conditioning and flowers in the room. We ate in the restaurant the first night which was a set menu (no choice!) and was very good. Breakfast is also very good - choice of local pastries, tea/coffee, local conserves and yoghurt.

The pool is quite small so we went to the other hotel to use the pool for a day. Location is pretty good at the top of the medina. I would recommend taking some ear-plugs. We were woken up at 5am every morning by the calling to prayer (once they used an air-raid siren and I flew out of bed and tripped over the table in fright!!!).
