Riad Dar Al Kounouz

Certificate of Excellence

This small riad is luxurious and full of character. It has a calm and peaceful atmosphere, very welcoming after a long day in the city. It is well-located (once you've found it the first time!) and very close to the square, souks and other attractions.

Breakfasts were good - pancakes, bread, orange juice and choice of hot drinks. Do eat in the evening too - the meals were excellent - good quality, well presented and served either in the small dining room or on the roof in the sunset - fantastic.

The roof terrace, with its shade, tents and loungers is very pleasant. There is a hamman (for a small extra charge) but we did not try it.

Dominique, the manager, and his staff speak good English which helped booking and arrangements whilst we were there.

Amazing Riad. Highly recommended! We just left this Riad yesterday after spending 2 nights here as a group of 6. Had an amazing time - in the most beautiful Riad.

The rooms are absolutely outstanding - very roomy, very clean and with excellent facilities. We were a bit sceptical when walking to the Riad down all the winding streets after getting dropped off by the taxi- thinking it was a bit out of the way and possibly a bit dodgy. (Highly suggest paying someone to guide - ie the porters touting for business) BUT on arrival - amazing. The photos do not do it justice.

The staff are excellent - and have great tips on where to go - what to see. The breakfast was brilliant and plentiful. Did not have dinner here - but was told to tell them what kinds of food you like -they will buy it and cook it. If it was on a par with everything else - sure this would be amazing too.

Location - after that first scare - is amazing. Very close to the main square and very close to the souks. Would absolutely recommend.

Wow this Riad is absolutely brilliant. The staff were WONDERFUL. We rented the whole riad to ourselves and had asked for a party night - they organised the whole thing, we had a free bar, live music and dancing, birthday cake and a present! The riad is very clean, great situation - you wonder whether you will find it in the maze, but surprisingly enough always do!The staff are friendly and helpful, both during booking and whilst we were there. We went with children from 4 months to 6 years old, they all enjoyed it, were catered for brilliantly. We ate in every night due to having the children and were served delicious , different, Moroccon cuisine every night.
I cannot rate this place highly enough.

I would recommend asking to be met at the airport, contacting the riad direct and doing a deal direct with them(we did this through e mail), eating in the riad, having a hammam, get the riad to organise a masseur - apparently he was excellent!

I stayed at Dar al Kounouz with my mother, on a four day long weekend trip. The riad is in a great location, about ten minutes walk from the Djemaa el Fna, and in the middle of the souks.

The rooms and common areas are lovely, and our arrival and departure transfers all worked well. We had dinner at the Riad one night, and had a wonderful chicken and quince tagine on the rooftop terrace. The breakfasts were wonderful, particularly the morrocan crumpets which look like a cross between a crumpet and a pancake and taste divine.

In general the staff were very good, but one of the conditions of our booking was that we wanted late checkout, and were prepared to pay for this. We were promised that this arranged and was no problem, but on the last day we were told to leave our room by 11am, although our flight didn't leave until 8pm. We weren't given a word of apology or explanation, and this made for a pretty miserable last day.

Overall, it was a nice Riad though, and if it hadn't been for the last day unpleasantness, I would have given it a higher rating.
