“Quiet & chilled out gem in the heart of the Medina”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2009

We had a great relaxing stay in this Riad, couldnt fault it really! The staff left you alone to enjoy your holiday but were always on hand if you needed anything. Hermina (the maid) only spoke French but her happy cheery disposition every morning with our Moroccan breakfast was such a welcome sight from the hussle and hassle of the souks in the Medina. The surroundings are very authentically reproduced and you really felt this place had had a lot of love and care and thought in its renovation while at the same time you felt it had stood there for 100's of years. The rooms were ample for space, lots of hot water, a roof terrace to sunbathe or sit in the evening and Hermina will cook all meals if you require them. For 2 people, the 45euros/room/night including breakfast was a real bargain!

We stayed at Dar Al Kounouz for 3 nights with our two young sons and were really impressed with the beauty of the riad and the helpfulness of the staff.

For example, they booked a car for us (at better rates than what we could find online), and ran out to get a roadmap for us at the last minute when we realized we needed one. They also gave good, straightforward advice on sites, shopping, and getting around the medina.

One minor critique: our ground-floor room was a bit dark, as the windows gave only onto the internal courtyard.

The tagine we had at the riad was wonderful (the couscous less so), and the breakfast was ample and delicious. A really lovely riad.

The review is coming a bit late ,but after reading the newest review with a rather low score I thought it was time for som nice words about Dar Al Kounouz..
We were four ladies staying here in november 2007.
We had a friendly welcoming already at the the airport .The staff did their best to make our stay a happy one.
The riad is very well located in the medina and only a few minutes from Jemaa El Fnaa. Most of the sights of the old city is in a walking distance.
One day we had the riad chauffeur to drive us up the Ourika valley where we had a guided walk from Setti Fatma. After that he drove us up to Oukaimeden in Atlas mountains -because we are norwegians and we wanted to se Moroccos best ski resort! It was a nice trip! (He altso was a very good driver.)
The rooms in the riad are cosy and nicely decorated.
I will also recommend both the very good dinner meals at the roof top terrace and of course the hammam in the house.
We are now soon going back for our second stay in Dar Al Kounouz!

I went to Marrakech with my wife on August and we stayed for a couple of nights at Dar al Kounouz. It needs some mantainance, breakfast (which is included) is pretty basic and simple and the staff were kind of grumpy and at some point rude.... I honestly do not recommed it, I guess there are better options.

I stayed at the Dar Al Kounouz some weeks ago. The rooms are nicely decorated and in general the riad is OK. However, I was not satisfied with the service I received since the staff were not friendly and they just limited to do the minimum.

I'm a bit delayed in writing this review so unfortunately this review isn't as detailed as it deserves to be.

I researched quite a bit before deciding on Dar Al Kounouz. With a fussy husband who likes his creature comforts and 4 year old twins a hotel may have been a better option, however I wanted to experience a riad.

I contacted Dominique at the riad and booked through him, he was extremely helpful. Kids not being a problem for them swung it for me! And they were so right. The cook in particular was so warm and friendly. She would feed the kids pancakes in the morning whilst I'd be ironing our clothes. The riad felt like home.

We stayed in Ivoire. The room was clean and bathroom nice too. Surprisingly very quiet too. It was great coming back to the calmness and coolness of the riad after a day at the souks.

Oh and another thing. On leaving we got to the airport only for my husband to realise he'd left our passports in the safe back at the riad. He called them up and they cycled it over and met him halfway which was extremely kind of them.

Would we go back again? Oh yes!

Dar Al Kounouz is a little gem of a riad in the heart of the medina. My family and I had a great holiday in Marrakech in no small part due to this wonderful little riad. The staff looked after our every need and took really good care of us. There were nice little touches at the riad: refreshing mint tea when you check in, complimentary bottled water in your room upon arrival, big umbrellas next to the reception desk for guests. Also helpful was the fact that their reception desk was always staffed by someone who spoke fluent English.

The riad itself is beautifully decorated, with a wonderful little courtyard, nice rooftop terrace and a nice relaxing communal television room.. I would recommend that you visit in the warmer months as Marrakech was a bit chilly during our visit although, thankfully, our bedrooms were individually heated which helped to keep the chill away while we were in our rooms.

I would make a couple of suggestions. Do have a dinner in the riad. They have a wonderful cook there and the riad is a really nice place to linger in the evening with a leisurely dinner after a hard day bargaining in the souks! Also, do make use of their airport transfer on offer. You will struggle to find the riad on your own.

I had some misgivings about going to Marrakech after reading the forums here. But I have to say we had an absolutely fabulous time. We take a lot of extended weekend trips and this is definitely one of the best trips we’ve ever taken. Marrakech is at the same time exotic and modern…and the riad proved to be the perfect little boutique hotel for us.

  • Liked — Special mention for their excellent coffee. It was so good I didn’t even miss my Nespresso machine back home!
  • Disliked — The call to prayer that rang throughout the medina in the middle of the night every night.
