The old medina is easy to get lost in but being relatively small you soon find yourself again. You see life going on around you but don't let people offer to take you anywhere-IT WILL COST YOU MONEY!

Having real disliked the level of pestering experienced in Egypt I was kinda dreading the Medina. I was pleasantly surprised here. I found people were friendly and humorous...my daughters loved comparing how many camels they had been offered! We never felt threatened or unsafe....but do of course always be aware. The biggest pest is the mopeds"

Not sure what I was expecting in the medina, but I definitely did not see that coming. The medina is huge, noisy and bustling with activity. It felt quite draining going round and trying to avoid all the begging and the calls to buy this and that. The main route leading to the main square is best avoided, it is heavily polluted and you need to watch out for crazy drivers.
Having said that, we did find some areas which were unique, the further our you go from the main square through the keather market, the Mellah area or the road leading to the Palace Bahia is auite beatiful. We enjoyed meandering through the narrow and winding streets stopping in the little shops for mint tea - friday morning was quieter and closer to the riads area is quieter, cooler and overall a breath of fresh air. So despite being exhausted from the hustle and bustle of the motorcycles, vedors and bikes, as long as you don't mind getting lost, it is still worth the visit.
