Despite preception it is possible to learn to navigate the Marrakech medina as a visitor. Traditional map reading is off limited help, but land marks and different souks work. Within a few days we learned to navigate, love and even relax in the labyrinth that the is theMarrakech medina. even my mother, who was initially dubious now loves it and says medina feels homely and safe.

Had loads of fun in the souq, haggling over sparkly slippers and chatting in (my) pigeon French. Don't take it too seriously...so what if you are paying 'tourist' prices- as long as its cheaper than you'd pay in your home country it's a good deal! Felt very safe everywhere, only bad experience was being hand-grabbed by a couple of henna tattoo ladies who drew on mine and my friends hands then demanded money even though we had said no. Keep your hands in your pockets when you see them coming in the main square :-)

We loved the medina and spent the better part of our four days in Marrakech there, just taking it all in! For our first day, we had a great guide, set up by our travel agent in advance. We highly recommend him - Abdelouahed Chahidi, mobile 0662357588. We toured with him for about 8 hours, including lunch, and became comfortable enough by the end of the day to return several more times without a guide. We haggled successfully for leather goods, spices and scarves. We enjoyed the snake charmers, monkeys, acrobats and musicians in the square. Went back two evenings and at the stalls - wonderful food and so entertaining! The Moroccan people are amazingly friendly - "big welcome" is their common greeting to Americans. An absolutely unforgettable experience, not to be missed!

The Medina is a labyrith and you will likely get lost several times, even if you have the greatest map. But it is safe and fun to just walk around and absorb the Moroccan life.

If you are looking for a specific type of item there are different areas of the Medina that you should visit, ie leather goods, metal work, etc.
