As with all areas of this sort, one must be prudent against the pick-pocket. Otherwise, a great place to shop and spend a leisurely day browsing the various handicraft stores. Part of the experience is to bargain your purchases. Never accept the first price and offer what you think the merchandise you want is worth. In the evening, take a Moroccan mint tea on the terrace of one of the cafés overlooking the square and soak in this incomparable atmosphere.

We have just returned from our first trip to Marrakech - 4 nights for my husband's birthday. Stayed at a wonderful Riad in the Medina (Riad Kniza) and spent a lot of time wandering the streets of the Medina. The markets are intriguing and an assault on the senses ... however, what became quite tedious was the constant hassling by young men, asking if you want directions. If you showed any interest or even asked for help, they would then want money! Be prepared, we tried to be polite but after 3 days of it, it became rather tiring. Other than that, we felt safe in the Medina, despite the hustle and bustle. ...

Allegedly the Spiritual and historical heart of Marrakech. Totally different day and night. Once used to display the heads of executed criminals it now displays some strange and wonderful sights. A must see in daylight and at night.

Marrakesh is completely different from North America/Europe. Take some time to adjust to the cultural differences first, then wander into the Medina. It's very fun, but very different. Take some time to look around yourself and get familiar with landmarks. It is very easy to get lost, wander outside the medina and then end up paying too much for a taxi. Be sure to bargain for everything - offer half or less of the asking price as a starting point. There is no telling what the actual price for the goods are, and you're likely still getting screwed, but enjoy it - Morocco is a poor country, and it won't hurt that much. Be sure to eat the food, it's delicious and plentiful. Go to the bathroom in your hotel or find Les Bains de Marrakesh or La Maison Arabe - these are up to western standards for bathrooms where the rest are not. Also, wear durable shoes that you can get dirty (blood, feces, water, etc will be on the street). This is overall a fascinating place, so just walk around and enjoy it. La Maison Arabe has a GREAT restaurant and there are several very nice pastry shops in the medina.

We saw everything from snake charmers, herb doctors, donkey pulled wagons to a Palace in the Medina. Definitely a cultural adventure.
