This is like nothing I've ever seen anywhere in the world! It truly is an experience... If you're feeling brave take the time to discover this without the aid of a guide and allow yourself to be transported to another world. Try to ignore the stall holders calling out "Fish and Chips" and imagine you're back in the times of the Arabian Nights...
Be firm, confident and be prepared to walk away and you will have a unique experience. Defnitely worth seeing!

wonderful market for "babouches" and leather. ALWAYS negotiate to get the best bargain! Place des Epices is worth a visit.

We stayed in the medina in a Riad not far from Jam el fna and we enjoyed every moment, the best thing to do is keep walking and get lost, when you are tired or want to come out then just head for Jam el fna, you will see many narrow streets with houses on both side with no windows, this was desinged not to show of wealth in islamic world, the street may look dark and scary but they are very safe day or night. If you want to buy genuine Moroccan leather then Fez is the place and not marrakech as marrakech is full of cheap imported leather, you may find genuine leather but one has to be an expert I think to filter them out. If you are not having breakfast in the riad/hotel then head out to the main square in the morning and you should see stalls selling riffa (morrocan flat bread) and other breakfast food which we enjoyed. Just enjoy the culture, orange juice and mint tea when you are there and try to get lost to experience the real medina

Wow, what a busy place the souks are, contrary to many beliefs the local Moroccan people do not hassle you as much as claimed, yes they want to sell you their goods but be firm, polite and positive if you are not interested. They are really nice and happy people, bartering is part of their life so enjoy the experience, half their offer and meet somewhere in the middle, be prepared to have a final price in your head and be prepared to walk away, you won't get far!

The alleyways and cobbled lanes twist and turn and its very easy to loose your sense of direction, keep walking and enjoy it. Don't ask for directions from anyone in the souk who is not a stall holder (so therefore can't leave their shop) and just keep your wits about you.

The motorcycles and mopeds are a pain and while they are not allowed inside there seems to be no one stopping them and they zip around at some speed.

You cannot come to Marrakesh without visiting the Medina and traversing the souks, keep your eyes open, your senses sharp and enjoy the sights, smells and adventure in this historic city.
