“Souks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

This is a very traditional way of shopping in the Medina. There are different types of Souks (markets). It's good to get a guide book and a map for it. It's easy to get lost. Some of the stalls are full of mass produced rubbish and it's best to avoid them. This is where you'll need the map to go to the right souks like Rhaba Kedima, Souk Smarine or Place des Ferblantiers. And haggle, haggle, haggle!

“A real eye opener!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

Take the bull by the horns and go for it. It is an experience that should not be missed as it would be a waste to visit this city and not visit it's heart.

“Good experience”

Shopping abound, with all different price ranges and varying items. Safer than we expected. You should still be on your guard.

“A bit intimidating but an absolute MUST-visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

There are miles upon miles of alleyways in the souks so if you are a good walker and don't mind - shortly after setting off and inevitably taking a mix of right turns here and left turns there - having absolutely no idea where you are, then no problem! We thoroughly enjoyed being in the thick of the souks on our very first morning in Marrakech - the sights, sounds and smells are absolutely fantastic!... but I do have to say that they can be of bit overwhelming: you do have to wisen up very quickly to the fact that there are plenty of locals in there wanting to 'be helpful' and, um, 'show you the way', or invite you to 'just come and have a look'... What happens in fact is that the friendly local is luring you into a shop of sorts - the favourite being the ubiquitous carpet shop located deep inside a building - and before you've actually realised that that is exactly what's happened, you have been sat down and given mint tea and... carpet after carpet is being unrolled in front of you and the hard-seller is talking non-stop, leading to his asking you, fairly quicklly, what you like most and, clearly most importantly, how much you're prepared to pay! It's difficult to get away but away you must get, that's for sure because it would take a split second for you to be sucked into a purchase you really don't want. The one thing to avoid doing is to answer the hard-seller when he asks you how much you'd be prepared to pay for an item you've been shown because the moment you've uttered a figure, you've as good as sealed the purchase in the eyes of the seller! So if you don't want to find yourself in a very awkward spot, keep schtum and get out!
I had looked forward to buying a few items in the souks during my visit - some spices, herbal soaps, a little tagine maybe, a teapot for mint tea, a couple of bits of jewelry, etc., but at the end of the day, because it's utterly impossible to browse at leisure due to the fact that the sellers are incredibly pushy (and won't hesitate to block your way out of their shop/stall space until you've bought something), I gave up and came home with practically nothing!
Having said all that, I certainly do not regret spending a lot of time in the souks - the experience was great and, the next time I am in Marrakech, I'll be able to draw on the wisdom I have just acquired... (and be firm with those sellers and just say 'NO NO NO')!

“interesting / bargaining power”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

interesting place. performers with snakes, monkeys or some skills looking for basking $. bottled water is more expensive here. get water outside the medina before going there.
try not to buy on the first instance - shop around and test your bargaining powers - it's a battle of wills.
eg. 1 store had a price tag of 150 dhm and another 30 dhm.
