“Marrakech souk”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

We had a guide the first day, which is well worth it. Gives you some idea of your way around, and most importantly, the way back home!!. But if you see something on your tour, stop and buy it then, as you will never find the stall again! Even if you think you know where you are going! A fellow traveller of ours spent three more days trying to find a particular stall ......... and never did!

“Now an average souk”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

It appears the authorities want Marrakesh to be accessible to any travellers and so have pushed the souk towards the direction of safety and lack of hassle. It now seems interesting, but a bit antiseptic.

The only risks you'll run are i) (perhaps) a pickpocket, ii) getting lost or iii) getting ripped off if you don't haggle.

Sadly, the price you pay is that it feels too safe and a little unexciting - for the real thing, try Istanbul or Cairo !

“In the middle of Medina”
Reviewed March 30, 2013

The bazaar is rather typical. Do not miss the part where people work to make goods for sale. It is an old fashioned artisan colony.

“Bargains”
Reviewed March 30, 2013

Bargains if you offer about one tenth of the asking price and be prepared to pay about one quarter to one third. Don't be afraid to walk away. You will probably be pursued and your 'best' offer accepted. If not followed then go back and accept their best last price offer. Remember too if you are buying more than one item bargain for the price of one first and then ask for an extra discount for more than one. Always worked with us.

if you like silks [cactus silk] bedspreads, throws and scarves then take and extra empty bag with you. You will bring it home full. The colours of the silks are beautiful.
