This Jemaa el Fna square is absolutely mesmerizing and everyone should experience an evening there. My husband and I went on a Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday evening. There are thousands of people, restaurants, shops, and a beautiful view from any of the restaurant terraces. There are entertainers, musicians, etc.

Complete chaos in an electric excitement.....from the snake charmers, jugglers, acrobatics, henna tatto ladies, monkeys, music as well as the hawkers selling their wares, food and sweets stalls to families strolling about as if this was a walk in the park......this sets the scene of the Jemma el Fna .. This is worth experiencing by day and by night and a must to really get the feel of old Marrakech!

Typical tourist experience - street performers, snake charmers and hawkers (not only Moroccan goods but lots of cheap "made in china" light up toys). Basically, lots of people trying to find ways of getting some money out of you. Interesting way to spend 30 minutes two times - afternoon and night.

Seven years ago, i fell in love with Marrakech, so we thought this year we thought it might be a good idea to revisit... (with my parents)... Although i still found the place fascinating, I think the magic I felt all the years ago, had gone. I think for me this place has become too much of tourist destination and however authentic it still trys to be, its not.

Our first experience of Jemaa el Fna was awful. We found ourselves looking at the wonderful ceramic plates, wooden ornaments and beautiful lights and as we continued to walk through the alleys we eventually were lost. A young fella said he'd help us get back to the main square 'for free' but led us to the leather market and then demanded money. I have never spelt anything as vile as the combination of pigeon poo and ammonia and the bunch of mint that was given to help eliminate the smell didn't help. We managed to get back to the main square once we found the signs but we noticed we were not the only ones falling into this trap.
The square it lovely by night and a lot calmer. If you do buy anything from the souks then haggle - haggle hard. You'll meet some characters that know exactly what to say but don't be fooled. Offer an eighth of their asking price and stick to your guns. If they don't accept, walk away because you WILL find that same piece elsewhere.
