“Atmospheric”

Walk through and be amazed. Prepare to be approached by men with snakes and monkeys (poor animals). They will ask for money if you are taking photos. It is a place that is a must-see but on my trips to Marrakech I never dally long as it's chaotic. Try the fresh orange juice. Eat at least once at the stalls in the evening. Have a mint tea on one of the terraces outside just off the square. Savour the experience but keep your wits about you.

“Cheap food = poor quality food”
Reviewed April 30, 2013 via mobile

Two of us went (April 13) to one of the barbecues, one of the stalls serving sheep's head and finished off at an orange juice cart. You're supposed to be able to eat well for cheap on the main square and while you certainly get plenty for your money, you also get what you pay for quality-wise.

At the sheep's head place we got a meat stew (probably sheep,  we aren't 100%), a plate of assorted meat shorn from one of the heads (inc. cheek, tongue and brain), with the obligatory bread rolls and a tea and coke each. We only paid 50dh in total. The food's served by a guy who roughly hacks the meat into portions and plates up in front of you. The meat in the stew was occasionally very tender but generally it was quite grisly and fatty and there wasn't a great deal of flavour going on, bar the spice mix sprinkled over the top. Similarly, the sheep's head was (obviously) pretty grisly/sinuousy and also lacked flavour. The chef will dip your bread in the stew if you ask, which is worthwhile as it's dry otherwise. It's quite an entertaining place to eat and worth a go as it's the done thing, but it's probably not for anyone that's overly worried about unwashed plates and cutlery, and I include myself in that, hence I wouldn't be overly keen on returning.

At the BBQ we had chicken skewers, meat skewers and sausages, at 30dh per plate, also with the bread rolls. The skewers all had decent meat on them, but again there wasn't much flavour involved and the chicken was dry. The sausages were okay.

The orange juice stall was very nice, especially for only 4dh each. Very refreshing and tasty; as it should be really. We tried a few different ones and they do vary so if you find a good one it might worth sticking to.

Overall, the food was only okay but it is worth eating there, for entertainment value if nothing else and it is cheap. The staff trying to hassle you into their stalls can be very annoying, especially if you pause to think about your decision and get surrounded. However it's occasionally funny.

“Very good place”
Reviewed April 30, 2013

This is a great place to visit. If you are in Marrkesh, this place is a must see location. iTS very cultural and very busy. just beware of being conned by the horse riders. 100 Dirhams is farrrr too much for that

“Only at night”
Reviewed April 29, 2013

The food stalls at night is a must do as the food is cheap, good and the atmosphere execellent. During the day the area was fairly boring.
