We have just gotten home after spending 10 days in Marrakech, at the wonderful Riad 144. We had seen pictures on both Tripadvisor and their website, so knew it was beautiful, but were amazed to find that in reality it was even better. We were in awe of the chic design of every room and space, with every attention to detail. Utterly charming, and it was such a pleasure to escape to after a hard days bargaining in the souks.

The owners made the stay for us. It is co-owned by Jean and his mother Vivien, and they take it in turn each month to accommodate guests. We were lucky enough to meet both, as they were swapping over during our stay. Jean welcomed us to the riad, and made every effort to ensure that we were having an enjoyable stay. He is full of helpful tips and advice, and has some great restaurant recommendations. He made us feel incredibly welcome and relaxed. It was like staying with a good friend.

Vivien then arrived to take over. She is marvellous company- full of life and wit, and has a great philosophy. Truly a joy to spend time with. On our last night she pulled out all the stops. Candles on every step, lanterns, aperitifs on the roof terrace, 3 course meal. We felt very special indeed.

Touria the chef is absolutely fabulous. Her tagines were the best we had in Marrakesh. She made pancakes and homemade cake for breakfast. Heaven.

The location of the riad is great, as it is within the Medina, but not next to all the other riads and hotels. It is a very traditional area, where all the locals will say good morning and night- we felt very safe there. It is also a two minute walk to a taxi rank where you can pick up a petit-taxi for around 10-20 dirhams (£1.00-£1.50) to almost anywhere in Marrakech.

If you are considering staying in Marrakech, there can only be one choice of Riad- Riad 144. It is just perfect. Look out for next year too, as Jean and Vivien are extending. We seriously cannot thank them enough. Lovely people.

I had been recommended Riad 144 but despite this, the reality surpassed my excpectations. Riad 144 is in the heart of the lively, authentic, dusty, alleys of Marrakesh. Open the door however and you enter a wonderful quiet and stylish oasis hosted by the charming Jean. The authenticity is kept whilst mixing it with good design, as well as those extra holiday luxuries such as a cook and a masseuse! The rooms are lovely and the splash pool is larger than most. I miss those evenings spent on the sofas of the roof terrace drinking ice cold wine.......

What a perfect stay! As we arrived we were welcomed by Viviane (the mother of the owner) with ice cold cloths and tea. She explained everything and showed us the entire Riad which is extremely stylish, artfully decorated but one feels at once comfortably, it doesn't feel like in a museum. We stayed in the Secret Room which is fantastic! At the first evening I booked the Hammam which was the best in our entire Morocco journey. We also ordered dinner for our first evening which began with drinks and snacks (the Guacamole dip was so delicious! we had to ask how to prepare it and already made it at home) on the roof terrace, then dinner was served which also was great, and the atmosphere was stunning. During our stay Viviane took great care of us and did everything to make us feel at home. As our first dinner at the Riad was such a great experience we also booked it for the second night and again it was such a great atmosphere, we still dream of it.

Staying at the Riad 144, is like staying a friend's house. Jean is just so friendly and lovely, and goes out of his way to give you so many great tips about Marrakech. It's also in such a great central location. You really need a place like this to escape the craziness of Marrakech, everytime I stepped through the doors I felt myself just relax straight away and go aaahh. My Bf and I stayed in the Red room, which was gorgeous with it's own little fireplace (although we never actually used it). Every morning we took breakfast on the beautiful terrace, kindly prepared by the cook Touria. Who climbed the stairs with all our goodies every morning!

I also had the traditional hammam there, which everyone should do!

I don't hesitate to tell everyone how great the Riad was, definitely one of my highlights in Morocco.

Winding your way down the magical narrow streets with concierge in tow to take care of your luggage you are greeted by your hosts as you enter into the sanctuary of Riad144.

The regular cares of work and life wash away as you relax into a delectable Moroccan afternoon tea on the terrace and become accustomed to the tranquil lifestyle you will adopt for the duration of your stay.

Vivienne and Jean, together with their discreet and excellent team of staff are the most perfect hosts, ensuring your every desire is met - whether it be an incredible Hammam upstairs followed by the most relaxing massage experience you have ever had, housekeeper and chef Touria's mind-blowingly-delicious tagines served above the rooftops of the Medina whilst listening to the soft chanting of prayers, softly swaying in a rooftop Hammock - day or night, cooling down in the plunge pool, early evening apéro in the courtyard - or whilst still in the pool!, or playing with Tobias and Eduard - 144's resident Tortoise.

Each of the exquisite rooms have been designed as a labor of love and combine Moroccan influences together with touches of French and Madagascan taken from both Jean's and Vivienne's colourful tapestry. The suites are vast and scattered with interesting finds and books where you can sit whilst soft white voiles gently sway in the scented breezes that circulate the Riad.

Riad 144 is our favourite boutique escape in Marakech for those with a love of great design, stunning surroundings and a home from home ambiance.

PS Don't forget to sample Vivienne's chili tapenade, you will never have tasted anything quite like it.

Room Tip: If The Beldi or Secret Suite are available - you simply must!

From the moment we arrived at Riad 144, every effort was made to make us feel welcome. The charming host Jean and his friendly staff certainly have an eye for detail and they continuously went above and beyond to ensure that we were happy and that all our needs were accommodated.

The Riad itself is absolutely gorgeous and it is obvious that a lot of love and effort has been put into it. The interior is lush and the rooms are breathtaking; each of them spacious, very nicely decorated and comfortable.

Even though Riad 144 is conveniently located right in the middle of the busy Medina, the inside is a peaceful haven. When it gets too hot, a dip in the plunge pool on the patio is the perfect way to cool off. During our stay, we also enjoyed a relaxing massages from a very friendly and professional masseuse and I would encourage anyone to do the same.

I would highly recommend Riad 144 to anyone who is visiting Marrakech and who is looking for a place to stay that offers excellent service and comfort in an intimate environment. I loved every second of my time there and have no doubt that I will be returning very soon!

Riad 144 is a stunning place 2 stay people. The view, the owners, the rooms. The owners are good friends and are neighbours of mine. I live in ( Amsterdam) Marrakech for 2 years now and a couple of weeks ago i was there with some friend of mine. We had such a nice time at Riad 144. They not only treated me as a king but also my friends. I left Marrakech before my fiends left for London and it is so good to hear that they had the best time of their lives in Riad 144.Trust me it is worth it 2 stay at Riad 144. And thank you Jean. Riad 144 Rocks !!!!! xxx Avi

Room Tip: Guests ask for the hidden room with the blue light. You will never forget it. I love that room.
