Dar Soulahfa is an exotic, beautiful riad, comfortable, and amazingly quiet. The staff prepared two meals and breakfast, all delicious. The owner, Stuart, helped organize transportation, meals, and a surprise party for our teenage daughter. My younger children enjoyed the balcony tortoises. Dar Soulahfa exceeded my expectations.

“An Oasis of Calm”

This Riad is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main thoroughfares. You will enjoy peace and tranquility in this accommodation away from the busy life that Marrakesh is all about. The staff are very friendly and will see to your needs, such as an evening meal should you wish. You decide want you would like, pay cash up front and the meal will arrive at the time that you asked; alcoholic drinks will need to purchased from a supermarket. The driver, who speaks good English, can arrange for excursions away from the Medina, check and confirm prices with him first. We visited the waterfalls in the Oukrika Valley and the very informative Berber Ecomuseum. Also, a camel ride in outskirts of Marrakesh. Minutes from the Riad are two well worth visiting museums: Dar Si Said and Bahia Palace. The Riad is well maintained with plenty of space to relax; the plunge pool was very welcoming from the heat of the day as was the air conditioning in the rooms.

“Beautiful, traditional riad in the medina”
Reviewed January 5, 2014 for a stay in January 2014

I stayed as part of a group of six girls for new year 2013/14. The riad is beautiful and Stuart very helpful in the booking process and ensuring the journey from the airport (we paid 150 dirhams - about £11.50 - for a taxi that had been organised for us) was easy.

The riad is close to the main square (10 minute slow walk) on a side street so is central but quite quiet. You can hear the calls to prayer from a nearby mosque. There are nice shops and restaurants nearby. We all enjoyed Pepe Nero in particular (Italian with a short morrocan menu).

The three double rooms are of a similar size and all nice. Two have an interlocking bathroom, with another bathroom and toilet a floor below. The roof terrace is great in the sun and a lovely spot to sit, chat, eat, relax.

The power went off in the riad for two evenings we were there - both times from 8pm to 11pm - not sure why but luckily the broken gas heater was fixed otherwise we would have been freezing! Definitely take warm clothes for the evenings.

On our third evening we enjoyed a dinner and musicians at the riad for our friend's 30th birthday, which was a lot of fun and easy to arrange.

Our next day was spent on a trip to the atlas mountains which are quite scenic and which the staff at the riad organised. We paid 1000 dirhams for the driver for the day. The trip was fun but we were essentially forced to eat at a restaurant full of tourists with rubbish food just so the driver could get his 120 dirhams commission, this left a sour taste in the mouth literally and otherwise! Probably to be expected, though.

Overall this is a nice place to stay where any meals and trips you want will be organised for you. The lunch and dinner we had - 100 and 150 dirhams each respectively - were both delicious and the ladies that cooked them very sweet.

Many thanks for the review, it's great to hear that you all enjoyed your stay at Dar Soulahfa and had a New Year and Special Birthday to remember, I knew you would. I am glad you appreciated the traditional charm of the house, we think it's quite a special place very much helped by it's fantastic location. It is also nice to hear that the staff remain popular, they are lovely people who always do their very best to ensure our guests are made welcome.
It is unfortunate about the break in the electricity supply, it was a problem throughout the local area and actually quite unusual but not unheard of.
I am pleased to hear the staff responded quickly concerning the heater to ensure you were comfortable in what can be quite chilly evenings during the winter months. I take care to provide as much information as possible before a stay which does include advice on what weather to expect so guests are prepared.
Many thanks for the comments concerning your trip out of town, I believe this was to the Ourika Valley, a lovely drive over the Haoura Plain following the river to a number of waterfalls and very easily completed within a day, it provides a great contrast to the city and is very popular with many visitors to Marrakech. I will speak with Najeem and ask if he can find a more interesting place for lunch, I'm sure he will be happy to do so.
I hope you will return to Marrakech again in the future where you can all be sure of a very warm welcome at Dar Soulahfa.
Kindest regards.
Stuart

“Beautiful Riad in the Heart of Marrakech”
Reviewed April 11, 2013 for a stay in March 2013

I travelled to Marrakech for the first time with my partner and another couple. The owner was very informative sending through useful information about the Riad, its staff and the surrounding areas. He also arranged for the houseman (Soulaimane) to meet us at our arrival gate and take us in an airconditioned taxi to the Riad. Soulaimane speaks very good English and was as helpful as he possibly could be.

The Riad is hidden deep within the Medina so you get the real cultural experience of the cobbled alleyways and local sellers then you step into your Riad and its like a whole new world. Decorated very traditionally and a very peaceful setting.
Please note that this is a beautiful Riad that deserves 5 stars but it is not like 5 star accommodation. If you are expecting modenly decorated and swipe key entry then you will be disappointed. But if you are expecting traditional decor, low light lanterns, a real Moroccan experience then you will love it!

The breakfast was always ready at the time we requested, simple but tasty with lovely fresh coffee and orange juice. Fresh bread and sometimes coissants or eggs. We heard how great the cooking was so we requested dinner for our first night and it was amazing. Such good value and delicious! We only stayed 5 nights but had them cook for us 3 of those nights because it was so delicious.

For lunch we got a taxi to the supermarket and stocked up on sandwich stuff and also bought soft drinks and alcohol there as we found that reasonably priced. We also wanted to visit High Atlas Mountains which Soulaimane helped arrange for us which again was very reasonable 800DH each for a taxi for a full day. Great experience I highly recommend.

We spent a lot of time on the rooftop enjoying the sun and playing board games they had at the Riad. They provide sunloungers for those wanting to tan and a sheltered cushioned area for those preferring the shade. It was perfect for us.
Another really nice touch to the Riad was the two pet tortoises they had on the rooftop. They were very friendly and sweet and we enjoyed feeding them leaves and watching them follow us around. (Dar Soulahfa means House of Tortoises I believe).

All in all it was a lovely stay. The showers were powerful although hot water always ran out by the time the 4th person showered so not sure how good that would be if 6 people were staying and showering at similar times.

The only other feedback I have, which probably can't be helped but guests should be advised of, is the length of time the ladies (cook & cleaner) spent in the Riad. One day when we had asked that they cook for us they arrived at 9am for breakfast and stayed all day not leaving until at least 8pm. They are the loveliest people so it was not a problem but just be advised this Riad is privately booked out for you but if you rerquest dinner you may have compay for the whole day.

And the fridge they advised was for our use was very useful however that was where the ladies prayed day and night. Which is fine and lovely to witness but not ideal when you come down after dinner to grab a bottle of wine and can't get to the fridge. 4 times we came down and couldn't access the fridge because one of the women were kneeling infront of it. Completely okay with them praying in the Riad when required but perhaps the fridge should be located somewhere easier to access.

But to recap this place is beautiful and I highly recommend for a real cultural experience and some delicious authentic food stay at Dar Soulahfa!!

“Peace in the Medina”

This property was a haven of peace, about a three minute walk from the frenetic square. The rooftop terrace was wonderfully peaceful in the good weather, and has a lovely shelter for those who might not like as much sun. There's a potted orange tree doing well on the terrace, if so inclined you could likely pick fruit from it. Two turtles seem to live on the roof terrace, too. The property was very easy and fast to book, and the owner provided a wealth of information very speedily, which we received gratefully, as it was our first trip to Marrakech. The houseman arranged to pick us up at the airport and take us to the house, and was available to sort out details for us, and it is a brilliant area to explore (although exhausting on the touts-everywhere front). We sent several texts to the houseman on our last day, seeking assistance, but he did not respond. We only had one breakfast in our three day stay, and consisted of pastries and toast, tea, and a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice. Just the one glass, mind you - we asked for a second and were declined. While I think everything you need is in the place, it can be a challenge to find - we only located bath towels on the second day, near the door to the roof, and bathing with the benefit of a hand towel was a challenge. The plunge pool seems not to be used, and is not heated - likely it is brilliant when it is 40C out, but we did not use. Bathrooms galore if you travel with a larger party, and hot water aplenty. The property is clean and welcoming, and the location is fantastic.

Many thanks for taking the time to write a review for us, I'm really pleased you enjoyed your stay and appreciated the fantastic location of Dar Soulahfa. Marrakech can indeed be a bit of a culture shock so it's great to have such central accommodation in which to retreat when you need some time to relax.
The breakfast which is included in the price of the rental is purchased fresh each morning with just enough juice being squeezed for that meal, however the staff are always happy to purchase items on behalf of our guests and there is a separate fridge for guests to store their own drinks and snacks.
Bath towels are usually left on each bed, my sincere apologies if this didn't happen, I can assure any future guests that a request made to the staff would have seen a ready supply, it must have been an oversight on this occasion. The towels left at the door to the roof terrace are intended for use on the sunbeds and when using the pool.
During the summer months the little plunge pool is a wonderful way of keeping cool, it's almost essential, obviously in the cooler winter months it is used very rarely though it is always keep full and clean just in case!
I and the staff at Dar Soulahfa are always keen that our guests should enjoy their time at the house and are committed to doing all we can to see this happens.

“Lovely Riad, Great Location, Fabulous Staff!”

Lovely Riad in the perfect location not far from the central square and souks. Firstly, the enquiry and booking were completely hassle free. Stuart the owner replied to any queries immediately (even when the poor man was stuck abroad with bad weather!) so greatly appreciated and outstanding customer service from his behalf! On our arrival, we were met at the airport by Soulamaine, the houseman, who by all accounts is an absolute peach - nothing was too much bother for him and he was helpful in every way possible with any questions or queries we had. The Riad is lovely, clean and very comfortable, the only thing I would say to those visiting in the winter months is to be prepared for the huge drops in temperatures at night as it can be really chilly. Heaters were provided which were a big help to take the chill off. The roof terrace is great (complete with two tortoises) and a great place to kick back and relax when the need is there. Atika and Khadji (cook and cleaner) are just lovely, lovely people. In fact if I could have brought Atika home, I would have because her cooking is to die for. We ate in the Riad every night and were never disappointed, only sorry that I don't have the skill for cooking tagines as she does! Marrakech itself is great, so much happening, to do and see - I'm sure we could have squashed a lot more in on our 4 day stay but were happy wandering around the souks, haggling for the best price and people watching in the square. Way too much to see with snake charmers and monkeys, henna'd ladies and several acts going on at once. Be careful about taking photo's though as they do expect to be paid, but everyone was pleasant even if we refused to pay. All the shop keepers we came across were happy, friendly and drove a hard bargain - but persevere, hold your nerve and you'll be fine and happy with the price you get hopefully! We are a group of 6 Mams who go away every year and it was perfect for us - lovely to catch up and can do as much or as little as you want. Might be worth a second visit to see all the bits we didn't quite get round too seeing! Go for it, book it, it will be well worth it!
