If you're not staying at the riad, it's difficult to envisage what awaits you when you knock at the door of Maison MK for a meal - it's very plain outside and completely belies the beautiful mixture of trendy modern and sympathetically traditional decor that greets you inside. We received a wonderfully warm welcome from our hosts who took us through the central courtyard and up the stairs to the roof terrace for pre-dinner drinks where we selected our meal choices. The terrace and bar are worth a special mention - designed over multiple levels, you're afforded a wonderful view of the city, particularly the Koutoubia Mosque, and your every comfort is catered for.
The menu is superb - a wonderful fusion of local ingredients and international influences which really gets your taste buds going. Having made our choices, we were taken to our table - a perfect birthday present for my wife - intimately positioned by the fiery fountain by the pool, beautifully decorated with rose petals and very romantic. Each of the five courses was outstanding and, although it's difficult to single out one in particular, the herb-stuffled leg of lamb main course, served with carrot and coriander jus and vegetables, was hugely memorable as was the perfect finish of tajine apple tart, ice cream and caramel. An excellent Moroccan red wine was the perfect accompaniment.
The service was impeccable throughout - the staff were so attentive and took care of us from start to finish. We were also visited by chef Omar who told us about his influences and experience and talked through one or two of the dishes that he had so creatively prepared. It was by some margin the most expensive meal we had in Marrakech and yet it was probably half the price that we would have paid back home. A very fine meal, served perfectly in idyllic surroundings - Gastro MK is fully deserving of its accolades.
