We enjoyed the cooking class very much. It was a lovely experience, the roof top restaurant has amazing view and lovely setting, we feel very relax and the whole cooking class experience is the best experience of the whole trip.

We have been there about a week ago and I cannot add myself to the chorus of positive comments and share the correctness of its position in Tripadvisor. Customers, albeit in a veiled way, are subject to a strict timing for the evening, as if they had been invited to dinner by... the Queen! This begins with the fact of having dinner all at the same time ... and having to finish before 11 o’clock not disturbing the sleep of... resident guests! Almost as if guests of the restaurant were not as important.. The ritual starts with an aperitif and canapes on the terrace ... nothing really special. Then follows the dinner at the lower floor in a narrow room with a ordinary decor.. Nothing fancy or romantic. The riad itself is quite small and as a whole, it's nothing particular. The service it’s ok, but the food of the set menu, although presented with visually elaborated dishes, it is absolutely trivial in its taste, without anything special to justify the apotheosis of positive comments and the number 1 position, especially if one takes into account that, without wine, the bill was 55 Euros, per person: Price at least double than the real value of the dinner.. if iat least it was good! Definitely..."the King is naked!"

Hi Dale – thankyou for your comments, even if they are a little severe ! As you know, we ask every client for their feedback because we really care about whether guests have enjoyed their meals & we constantly look to tweak & improve what we offer. We tell our guests exactly how the evening pans out before they even decide to book and it seems that this type of evening doesn’t suit you so we are puzzled as to why to came at all.
I am also sorry that you appear not to have enjoyed your food in Marrakech very much – I see you gave two of the restaurants 4-stars, one restaurant 2-stars, and two restaurants 1-star. Despite your dislike of Marrakech food in general, I hope you still had a good holiday.
I have written to you on Tripadvisor to try to find out more, but there was no answer so far – so, sadly, I will have to use this public forum to respond to your points one by one.
1. The timing. We are a small, high level restaurant (only 16 people maximum) – think of it like private dining. So we ask guests to come any time between 7 & 8pm to enjoy canapés & cocktails on the roof terrace. Dinner is a 5 course tasting menu that we begin at about 8pm in the dining room. We have found that this format allows us to offer creative & imaginative food to a consistently high standard– something that is very hard to find in Marrakech, as Dale G found when I read his other reviews. Most clients say it is the best meal that they had in Marrakech, and we have been number one for over 2 years now, so I don’t feel we should change what we do.
2. The finish time of 11pm. As mentioned, guests arrive between 7 & 8 pm, so 3 to 4 hours for a dinner would seem to be quite sufficient for a nice evening. We know that the pace of the meal allows guests to have lovely leisurely meal & because we are a small riad, we do say that the restaurant closes at 11pm so people in the bedrooms upstairs can sleep. This is all mentioned before the clients arrive & generally seems to be very acceptable to our dining guests.
3. Canapes & Cocktails. Most clients love to be on our roof – Jamie Oliver & his TV crew used it for their filming specifically because it was the best roof terrace they found having searched riad rooftops for days looking for a great location.
4. Décor. I would have never described our dining room as ordinary décor – for a start it is incredibly vibrant orange from floor to ceiling. Murano glass lamps, white leather seats, modern Arabic calligraphy along the walls, and a 7 foot high candle holder snaking up the wall. But we all have our own definition of ordinary – most people love the décor. Our riad is a very strong design, but the website has many, many images on it so people can make up their own mind & decide if it is to their taste – I am sorry that Dale G found it not to his own taste.
5. Service & food. Service – “it’s ok” is a shame. We consistently get feedback saying that the service was great or excellent– professional, friendly & unobtrusive are the most frequent comments. Food – “trivial in its taste” – again, I’m not sure what to say except that Dale G obviously found it not to his taste – we have 93% of people so far saying it is either excellent or very good. Sorry you didn’t like it – but possibly that was your experience in the whole of your Marrakech visit ?
6. Price. We are 55 euros which is for canapés, 5 courses of creative food, and tea/coffee. It isn’t cheap, but we don’t pretend to offer cheap food – there are many places in Marrakech where price is the only criteria. We hope to offer clients the best meal they had in Marrakech in a luxury riad, with an unforgettable & special evening – sadly Dale G’s evening (and whole gastronomic time in Marrakech) was unforgettable for all wthe wrong reasons, which is a real shame.

Clearly, given how much typing I am doing in response to Dale G, we do care. We want clients to enjoy their meals & their brief time with us, but sometimes the desires of a client are just not in harmony with what we are offering (and are contrary to the vies of most of the other guests as well). I am just sorry that he did not have the evening that he was looking for.

Regards,
Paul.

Make sure you save some (well, a lot) of dirhams for this fabulous experience...the service is impeccable, the food amazing, and the place itself a little bit magic. We talked about this meal for a long time after. Really stand-out properly great.

It was raining when we visited for dinner so we weren't able to enjoy canapés on the roof terrace but this didn't detract at all from the amazing experience that is Gastro mk. Instead, canapés were served in their smoking room which is presided over by a life size camel smoking a cigar (you'll have to visit to see for yourself). The whole place is modern and chic but welcoming and immediately relaxing.

The wine list isn't extensive but it doesn?t need to be as Moroccan wine is pleasant. Each course of the five course tasting menu was beautifully presented and the service was exceptional. Omar, a Claridges trained chef under Gordon Ramsey, came to each table (I only counted 16 covers) at the end of the evening and asked for genuine feedback on his creations.

This has to be one of the best dining experiences we've had in any country. Well worth booking to visit during a trip to Marrakech.

From welcome to the mint tea we were taken through a wonderful night at MK. A lovely romantic drink on the terrace then a gourmet diner combining Morrocan classical ingredients and spices tweaked with french cooking techniques. The staff was so professional and nice. We highly recommand MK.
