“Serene, Beautiful Riad”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

We were traveling as a group of 8; two families; 4 adults; 4 kids. We stayed there for 5 nights. The riad fit us perfectly. It's beauty is apparent the minute you come through the door and into the courtyard. The pool, even though small (kudos for being able to fit one in) was a big hit with the kids and a very welcome amenity to have after a hot day of walking the medina. The rooms were perfectly decorated and superbly comfortable. The roof top terrace was a great spot to spend the evenings.

The manager Redouan, met us in the nearby square upon our arrival in Marrakech and escorted us through the narrow streets to the house. The house, like most Riad's is designed well to block out most of the noise of the city. This one borders a peaceful garden which only further helps reduce the city noise. It's located in the northern part of the Medina. It's about a 5 minute walk from the northern end of the souks, and about a 15 minute walk to Djemaa El Fna.

Redouan made sure we were well taken care of throughout our whole stay. He even arranged to have a doctor show up within a couple of hours when one of our group fell ill. He introduced us to Zahira who prepared some amazing meals for us and took care of the house while we were there. They were both wonderful to our families. Zahira even brought her son on the last day to meet our two boys.

For non arabic speaking tourists, speaking french is definitely a help, but it won't get one past all language barriers. We were not always successful in communicating meal requests, especially the non-traditional ones for the kids. But there was always more than enough food and it was always delicious.

The refrigerator is stocked with water and wine for your use. It was made clear that we were to pay for what we used. We did however forget to ask for the price of each beforehand, which would have been helpful.

These comments are noted as pieces of advice to future guests, not as anything critical of the service or staff of the hotel. They were exceptionally kind and welcoming the whole time. We had a wonderful stay and can recommend this place without reservation.

As apart of a group of six girls, I can speak for all of us saying the riad is fantastic. A quiet haven amongst all the hustle and bustle of the Medina. I slept on the mezzanine floor of the smaller bedroom, but it was perfect for me and my Mum's needs (a place to rest our head and get ready in clean comfort).

Everything was in working order, there was a bit of an issue when three of us wanted to shower at once, but that was remedied by having system of time management and taking turns - must remember that you're not at home and things are different. You can't judge Morroco on UK standards or you'll never enjoy yourself.

Only five minutes walk from the souks which lead you to 'La Place', it's in a good location. I think only ten minutes drive from the airport, so no stress there. You should be respectful of the traditions, we were all in maxi dresses and full length playsuits with our shoulders covered when needed, you will attract less attention. Whilst it is a cheaper country than ours, you should be careful not to insult when bartering in the souks, offering 100 Dirhams is offering £8 for a huge leather handbag, you have to be fair because even if you pay £20 for something, it's still half of what you'd pay at home.

The plunge pool is just what you need for soaking your feet after a day of wandering the streets of the Medina, such a great feature. All our bedrooms were clean, tidy and suited for our needs, the television channels are limited, but that's of no consequence because if you've come to Morocco to watch TV, you're wasting your time! The roof terrace is great for an afternoon layabout before you get ready to experience the Medina at night time, 'La Place' comes alive at dusk with a dining market - try Stall 114 for a tasty dinner, but also dine in the riad for dinner an have a tagine made by Zahira (the housekeeper), her food is delicious.
Our airport transfers were smooth and efficient, no problems at all.
Radoun (our host) was very friendly, helpful and knowledgable, nothing was a trouble. He booked us into the 'Heritage Spa' one morning and we had a fabulous two hour spa experience for less than 300 Dirhams (about £24).
Zahira was lovely, she was very friendly and patient - despite our lack of French! Zahira recommended a good Henna artist if that's something you'd like to try out, much more appealing than having it done on 'La Place' at night. Mr Ahmed was a quiet friend, working behind the scenes to keep the place neat and clean.

I don't think I could justly fault Maison Africa, definitely five out of five - if you want to be in the middle of it all and are after a mini adventure, this is the place! Watch out for nippy mopeds and bonkers taxi drivers, it's not the UK, so they have completely different ways of doing things.

Nothing to do with the riad, but when flying back to the UK, you can only change your Dirhams back to Sterling on landside - once you go through customs to airside, the majority of the shops only take Euros - only three coffee shops seem to accept Dirhams.

We, a family of four including two young children had a great time at Riad Maison Africa. I back all the other reviews of the riad and would add the location is also wonderful. It is a very short stroll to the souks, not too far from the square and feels like a perfect little haven within the Medina. My boy is five and played with the kids outside the front door on most days and along with everyone else appreciated the great hospitality of Zahira, Ahmed and our contact Pete. As we visited in February it was relatively cool so even better reason to be in the Medina but still able to enjoy the sun on the roof top balcony. Food was great, for vegetarians and meat eaters, enjoyed dining out at le Jardin and cafe Arabe and most places. Don't miss out on the hamman / massage double.

Had a great time. The riad is very well located and houskeeper Zahira is doing a swell job in keeping everybody happy! I adore the palmtree in the garden: gives a real holiday feeling since we don't have anything like it at home in Amsterdam!
Greatbspots to hang out in the area: café Arabe and Terrace des Elices. Bestvfood we ate at Villa Flore and les bains de Marrakech did the real thing for us.
All in all: wunderful!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2012

This is the last day of our holiday and we are so sad to leave. Our family of four (me, my husband, daughter of 11 and son of 14) have spent the last 5 days in absolute luxury - busy mornings in the Medina, lazy afternoons in the Riad, and fabulous meals cooked of course by Zahira. The plunge pool is fabulous - the stepped areas have allowed us to sit in the cool waters and read the afternoons away. Do take a Caleche in the evenings, a trip past the grand dame of La Mamounia and the 5 star hotels made us realise just how privileged we are to be staying at Riad Maison Africa. We have absolute privacy and quiet - eating what and when we want and venturing out with Zahira to the markets and Ahmed to the hammam. Oussamma is an amazing chap - so helpful - taking us in his car to Jardins Majorelle and offering us 24hour assistance should we get lost. Nowhere in the world have we ever had such service; no hotel has ever offered the help we have had here. Customer service has reached new levels here at Riad Maison Africa; Oussamma, Zahira and Ahmed are exceptionally kind, helpful and gentle people, and now friends. The souks and Djemma El Fna and street sellers are delightful - I remind myself that people are simply earning a living for their families and a polite smile and respect go a long way - it's all good natured fun for us - we love a haggle and a bargain. We are sad to leave but will return.

Room Tip: We booked the whole Riad for a family of 4 - allowed both children to have their own space to relax...

The Riad is very very clean and beautifully furnished, with a gorgeous roof terrace from which you can view all the other nearby roof terraces and watch the birds, planes and change in colour of the sky. Zahira and her husband and Oussamma were all extremely helpful and friendly, and the food was superb. I am a vegan and that posed no problem. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to stay in Marrakech. I have not rated the value as the stay was a present from my daughter.

We're just back from Maison Africa and as the title suggests we had a great time.

Oussamma, Zahira and her husband looked after us exceptionally well. Oussama was on call should we need him, and would have arranged trips, guides etc as required i'm sure but we had our itinerary pretty much sorted.

Zahira is a real gem. Her breakfasts delicious, crepes, omlettes, pancakes, all made fresh and they keep coming. Her dinners are even better. I challenge anybody to leave that table hungry, delicious tagines, cous cous with vegetables (vegans catered for), all stunning. As i gushed in Zahiras general direction in a slurred franglais more than once her brivat (little samosa type things) filled with chicken, beef, cheese or veg are amazing. The meal day 1 consisted of about 100 of these of all different sorts and they will not be forgotten in a hurry. I like my food.

Location of the Riad is good - 15 minutes from Djemma El Fna once you've got your bearings and closer to the Souks. It's got local supplies from the 2 little shops round the corner and felt safe once we'd landed. Don't be worried by the drop off from the airport in the square with the luggage barrow guy - it's just morocco - we were slightly and shouldn't have been.

Wifi, Tv, pool, sun loungers etc etc great. 2 things they might consider, a sisha upstairs on the terrace, and maybe some shower curtains but neither detracted from a lovely stay.

Room Tip: you cant avoid the call to prayer at 5 am from any room in marakech but they're all lovely. bath...
