“Great stay at Riad Dar Thania”
Reviewed June 21, 2010

We were very pleased with our recent stay at Riad Dar Thania. Although it's definitely on the small side, it was charming, well decorated, clean and comfortable with great breakfasts. Momo is a fantastic host and Ludovic was also extremely welcoming. Location is ideal - walking distance to several attractions but also quiet and relaxing at night. (Rooftop terrace at night is especially pleasant!) Would definitely recommend!

We loved our stay at Dar Thania which was convenient to the major sights of Marrakech (about a 10 minute walk from Djemma el Fna) but tucked into a quiet street. The hotel attendant, Momo, was a lovely host and suggested places for dinner, and accompanied us part of the way on certain journeys so as to make sure we wouldn't get lost navigating our first time from the hotel to various places. WiFi, a washer and dryer that we could use, AC all made the hotel a lovely place.

If you are looking for an intimate and authentic experience of Marrakech living, this is the place to be. This riad is charming, comfortable and thoroughly enjoyable. I loved the location of this riad, right in the heart of the medina and the proximity to Jamaa El Fna and all the major monuments. Still, it is very quite inside...hard to believe. The rooms are beautifully decorated and clean. I woke up everyday feeling like a prince out of 1001 nights. The staff and the owner were very friendly and speak English. They were very generous with information and suggestions for things to do in Marrakech. And the food was just to die for...Breakfasts were amazing...And the Moroccan tea worth the trip every time...Definitely an A+ riad.

This is a small riad/dar with just three suites rooms, terrace, and a few living spaces areas. If you are looking for personal service and a chance to connect with other travelers, this is the place for you. The rate attracts more of a young professional crowd looking for value, but with well designed and appointed accommodations.

We did have some trouble with the hot water system at first. Ask the management how to use the shower as it's not intuitive. Morning showers were more consistently hot than in the evening. The hot water system is on demand so there is plenty of hot water available.

TIP: Chamber Sourire contains two single beds, but can be converted to a King. The other rooms are only queen beds. Stay on the second floor for more quiet and privacy.

Momo can arrange a guide, transportation, hammans, restaurant recommendations and more. He and the staff are extremely hospitable and do not want their guests to lift a finger. We were so comfortable in the Riad that we preferred to spend the evenings inside rather than walking around Marrakesh. Another big plus -- there is a washer and dryer and free WiFi!

Finally, the staff were friendly and accommodating to gay travelers. Feel comfortable to express your needs and preferences here.

Riad Dar Thania was great...the Riad is beautifully decorated and the staff is so hospitable. The Riad is small but feels very homey. Ludovic even provided us with a shisha right outside our room before we went out to discover Marrakech. The breakfast was amazing too!

This is a beautiful, modern riad with a gracious, welcoming young host, and a great location just south of Djemaa el Fna square. Unfortunately, it was let down by an emphasis on form over function and particularly the hot water not working.

It's a small riad (3 rooms) which seems recently renovated, with a designy modern-Moroccan feel. The rooms are small but cosy, with nice fittings, ultra-comfy beds, and funky little shuttered windows looking out into the bright, open plan courtyard. Candles and music give a lovely ambiance. The cosy seating alcove is perfect for relaxing with a book, and there is a pleasant roof terrace (no view) for breakfast.

The young moroccan host was friendly and incredibly hospitable, without ever being intrusive. It really felt like being welcomed to a friend's beautiful home.

They get a lot right, but the emphasis on style is occasionally at the expense of usability. We could easily ignore minor irritants like having just a curtain to block off the ensuite, the design of the shower making a soaking floor unavoidable, and not having spare toilet rolls (presumably it spoils the look) and running out by morning. But more seriously, the showers and sinks are fed from a strange water system which automatically mixes the hot and cold water, and which didn't work properly during our stay. Despite trying morning and evening, we managed only a single hot shower between the 4 of us over a 2 day stay, the rest were freezing cold with the occasional brief lukewarm spell. The 3rd couple staying at the riad also had cold showers.

Our request for a discount was refused, apparently by the owner. The host suggested - admittedly graciously - that this made up for a bedroom chair which broke when I sat on it. At a fairly reasonable 70kg, I don't particularly feel the fault for that breakage was mine... an antique chair you don't want guests to sit on is a daft thing to put in a 2x3m hotel room! We didn't follow up the offer to phone the owner, not wanting to ruin our last evening with arguing and haggling. That shouldn't have been necessary. The (french) owner should recognise that in a boutique riad, 2 days without hot water is not a minor problem, and should be compensated.

Despite the problems, this was actually our favourite riad in Morocco. It's a lovely space with a wonderful host in a nice part of the medina. However, I can't recommend a stay here until the owner can confirm that he's replaced the badly thought out hot water system. If he also spends a few days living in one of the rooms, and irons out the few design flaws, this will become a truly wonderful place to stay.

My friend and I stayed 4 wonderful nights at this lovely, beautifully appointed Riad. Apart from being lovingly and tastefully restored (resulting in a delightful mix of modern Moroccan/French taste) it's location not 10minutes walk from the main square makes it an ideal place to explore the frenetic medina of Marrakesh. What makes this Riad exceptional though was the level of service and attention given to us by Momo, Amina, and Ludovic. It's fair to say we were waited on hand and foot and felt totally pampered. The breakfasts are delicious (wonderful home made yoghurt and jams) and you won't eat much better elsewhere in Marrakesh than with Amina and Momo's cooking.
It was a wrench to leave this place, though we continued on to have a wonderful rest of holiday in the High Atlas Mountains. Thank you for making our first visit to Marrakesh such a memorable one.
