I booked the Riad Azoulay as a honeymoon surprise. Neither my wife or I were in any way dissapointed. The care, kindness and hospitality from Massimiliano, and his staff was above and beyond anything we could have imagined. Met by Mohammed and walked to the Riad we were offered advice from haggling to taxis, mint tea was a welcome treat as we settled in. Our room, 'favourite', blended luxury and simplicity and we instantly felt relaxed and welcome as we sat reading on the roof and courtyard terraces. But, it was the little things that really shone out.

The Riad's night manager Rada served our dinners and breakfast offering explanations on the food we were eating and Morrocan culture, we were also deeply touched when he knocked on our door and presented us with a set of tea cups.

A journey into the market and a cookery lesson with Miriam and Mohammed was a real treat and highly recommended for any foodie. We look forward to practising all that we were taught!

I had also booked a surprise trip into the desert, which, unfortunately was cancelled due to inclement weather, Max, Rada and Mohammed worked tirelessly to organise alternatives and it was this attention to detail that sets this Riad apart from anywhere else we have stayed.

Being set in a local community was another plus as it allowed us to immerse ourselves truly in Marakech. The call to prayer was truly enchanting and the 5 am call couldn't be heard with the outside windows closed. Everything was in easy reach, the Jemma El Fna square a 7 minute walk the Bahia and Badi palaces 3 - 5 minutes away.

Staying here was a wonderful way to spend our first week married. Don't even hesitate to book.

We spent four nights last week at the Riad Azoulay, in the Sultane Suite (we are a middle-aged couple travelling with our teenage son). On our first night (having opted for the airport pick-up service), we were met at the entrance to the Mellah area of Marrakech by a member of staff who brought us to the Riad, then explained all about it's history, showed us around and served us the most delicious dinner.

We spent two nights in Marrakech, then Max, the owner, helped us arrange transport for a trip down to Essaouira, where we spent three nights. We then returned to the riad for another two days. This time, Max was pretty much running the place on his own, as it was Eid Al Adha, so he had given his staff the time off to be with their families.

The riad was very clean, beautifully decorated and very friendly. We felt entirely at home, reading in the lower courtyard or up on the roof. We couldn't escape hearing the muezzin's call to prayer at any time of the day as the mosque is indeed right on top of the riad, but it was a lovely feeling to be part of the city's spiritual life for a few hours.

We enjoyed the company of Meti, Max's Bichon Frise dog, and the house tortoise, who spends his time beetling round the pool.

The Mellah area can seem quite run-down if you haven't travelled much outside Europe, but it is very friendly and you feel that you are living in the middle of a 'real' community.

If I were to suggest any changes, I might have wanted a softer mattress - I personally prefer my bed quite soft - but that is just personal preference.

We thoroughly recommend Riad Azoulay for those looking for something that is so much more than a bland, hotel-chain experience. Thanks to Max and his charming team, for a very relaxing break.

At Riad Azoulay, the staff will make you feel like it's your home away from home. Although getting to this riad is an interesting walk through the spice market, the riad itself seems like an escape from the hustle and bustle of Marrakech.

Max the owner is super nice, and his dog is such a charmer! The staff is super helpful and even showed me around (the cash machine, the way to Jemaa El Fnaa). One of the staff also offered to take a cab ride with me to the Jardine Majorelle so the taxi fare was at a non-tourist rate.

The rooms are well kept and really really nice. There's a hair dryer! No TV though, but there's wifi internet. Breakfast was really really nice and surprisingly filling. I chose to get the massage service in the Riad so I could just go to bed after the massage and I slept like a baby after.

Highly recommended!

We have been to Marrakech before having kids and we were a bit concerned about going back with two little ones in the middle of the fascinating but certainly crazy medina...however i could not surrender to staying in a "normal hotel" and wanted to enjoy the beauty of a Riad. I chose Azoulay and could not have made a better choice! The Riad is beautiful and both rooms where we stayed (suites) were fantastic and ideal for a family. The location of the Riad is very convenient in the Jewish quarter (mellah) next to the spices market, a truly inspiring venue. But i think what sets this Riad apart the most is the warmth and friendliness of its owner Massimiliamo and its staff who really go the extra mile to make you feel at home and provide fast and impeccable service always with a smile. If you have small kids, they will make them feel at the center of the world, as they truly give children a lot of care and attention, like they were family. I cannot but highly recommend this Riad to anyone who wants to experience authentic Marrakech in style, with modern comforts, superb cuisine and fantastic friendly service. We hope to be back soon!!

Room Tip: Go for the Sultana suite...to die for!

This was our first visit to morocco and if this is the level of service to expect we are coming back every year! It's 5 star service for a 100 euros at night, what a deal!

I have stayed at four season hotels before but this little Riad gave me the best experience from attention to details, personable, amazing hospitality, great food, warm atmosphere that I will never forget.

We highly recommend Riad Azoulay

Spent an interesting week at Riad Azoulay for my mothers 80th birthday! We were looked after and made to feel at home by the owner Max and his staff Reda, Mohamed and Abdul, who showed us where to change money and where the square was on our first day.
We ate a few times at the Riad and all the meals (breakfast, lunches and dinner) were well prepared and tasty.
I took my own ear plugs for to dull the early morning call to pray which worked a treat!
We also had the hammam at the Riad which leaves you feeling cleansed and well scrubbed!!
All in all a lovely break and in a great little piece of Marrakech.

Room Tip: We had the ground floor room; Mauritaine for my mother and the first floor Syrienne both were spacio...

Riad Azoulay is an oasis of calm and serenity in the middle of the craziness of Marrakesh. We loved our stay. The rooms are beautiful, clean and spacious but what impressed us the most were the staff. Mohamed , Reda and Abdul were incredibly helpful and informative, Miriam and Fatiha cooked us beautiful meals, Kareema and Nadia made sure our rooms were spotless.
The location was good and we were able to walk to all the sights.
A lovely place to stay.

The Riad Azoulay combines the comforts, the traditional ambiance and the charm of old riads. The building has been restored to its former splendor of the past using the traditional materials, finishes and techniques. The Riad Azoulay has five spacious rooms, all overlooking the internal patio and all furnished with air conditioning and heating, roomy wardrobes, small safes for personal effects, Internet and WI-FI connection, mineral water and fresh flowers daily. Soft plump pillows and sheets of Egyptian cotton will help to make your nights comfortable and dreamy! All the bathrooms are ensuite, and are equipped with hair-dryers, soft towels and top rate ecological toilet and beauty products. Each suite has an individual theme, giving them a unique and unforgettable character. Some of the rooms can be provided with a third bed. The African, Mauritanian and Syrian rooms have matrimonial beds which can be made into two singles. The Riad Azoulay boasts two magnificent junior suites, the Favorita and the Tibetan Suites, and two large sumptuous suites, the Sultana and Royale Suites. The suites, which have been decorated with great care and attention to detail, come equipped with air conditioning and central heating, spacious wardrobes, private safes for the guests' personal effects, Internet and WI-FI connection, and a daily supply of mineral water and fresh flowers. Soft plump pillows and sheets of the finest Egyptian cotton have been provided to ensure the guests with all one needs for a relaxing night's sleep. All the bathrooms are ensuite, and are equipped with hair-dryers, soft towels and top rate ecological toilet and beauty products. The typical Mediterranean breakfast, included in the tariff of the room, can be served "al fresco" on the patio or terrace, or in the winter months, in the ground floor dining area. Guests will able to begin their day with freshly baked bread, homemade marmalade and jams, boiled, fried, or scrambled eggs or omelettes, oven fresh cakes and biscuits, yoghurt, fresh fruit, freshly squeezed orange juice, and of course coffee or tea. Light freshly made snacks are available throughout the day. Thus while you are basking in the sun on the terrace you could enjoy a Moroccan yoghurt made with honey and nuts, or a bowl of fresh fruit salad, or if something a little more filling is preferred, a "trio" of Moroccan salads, or a perhaps a sandwich of grilled vegetables, with goats' cheese and a touch of mint. Our dinners are the result of a fusion of Moroccan and Italian cuisine, served by candlelight, and followed by a relaxing herb tea. We never use processed foods in our kitchen, and all our meals are prepared using traditional methods. Our chef plans a delicious menu of the day with typical traditional Moroccan dishes, prepared with love and the freshest of ingredients. Try our "briouates" (small pastries with savoury fillings) or the famous "pastilla" with pigeon and almonds, Moroccan salads and soups, and our delicious tajines and couscous, and we are sure you will be delighted! As we are only a small hotel, guests are kindly asked to let the staff know if they would like to dine with us. The chef will make every attempt to satisfy any dietary requirements the guests may have. Vegetarians are made most welcome. Moroccan Cuisine is a perfect combination of various traditional cuisines and is one of the best in the world. Its fascinating mixture of flavours, aromas and colours, combined with its capacity to amalgamate vegetables, fish and fruit with delicate and refined spices, have made it renowned and appreciated the world over. Mediterranean, African, and Oriental cuisine have been fused with the local Berber traditions; the bitter-sweet tastes are inherited from the lands of Arabia, whereas the tradition of combining fruit with meat is Persian. The desserts, full of sugar and spice, are instead a Turkish passion. In order to know a country well, the is no better way than to study its traditional cuisine, taste its foods, and enjoy its flavours and aromas. Thus, with this aim in mind, the Riad Azoulay offers its guests the opportunity to join the chef Saida, who will reveal to them all the secrets of the Moroccan cuisine. During the course the chef will teach the students how to recognize and choose the correct spices for each dish, how to cook using the traditional methods, and how to prepare some true Moroccan meals to serve to their friends and family when they return home. Amongst other things students will be taught how to make cous cous with lamb stew and vegetables, how to use the terracotta tajine to braise meat with vegetables and fruit, and how to make some very special Moroccan desserts. The ritual of the Hammam, which heals the body and relaxes the mind, is available to our guests in our Wellbeing Centre. Guests can enjoy a relaxing steam bath or an invigorating body scrub in the candle lit hammam, sitting on the benches of Italian Carrara marble. Or maybe they would like to book a soothing massage by one of our qualified masseurs, and experience the exotic qualities of the locally sourced but world famous Moroccan Argan oil. ... more   less
