“Updated sleeping and still great value”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

depending on how busy this hostel is you can get a bed from 50-100dh (about £4.50 - 9) a night and this includes a basic breakfast of coffee, bread and jam / honey

The beds have recently bee updated and will post some more up to date pictures when I get a chance, it may not have the most facilities but the people who run it are always welcoming and helpful.

They do not serve dinner although can provide basic snack of bread & jam /. cheese so not sure where other reviewer has visited but not here :)

Unfortunately, on our way to 'Zitoune', of which I should say, we didn't have very high expectations, we were mistakenly taken to Riad Siwan (See my other review).
I say "Unfortunately" because Siwan is soooo gorgeous it does rather tend to make others seem incredibly dull and shabby by comparison. Zitoune falls into this category.
The Riad is huge and has incredible potential but it breaks my heart to see it needing so much tlc. The original standard of finish is incredibly high but the Riad has suffered from lack of investment by the owners. It appears that in preference to restoring and improving the original building, which could be stunning, they have bought the Riad next door and built a number of new rooms, which remind one of every budget motel room in the world.
Our room wasn't all that well cleaned if I am to be truthful. My wife and I did debate complaining but as we were only there for two days we thought that we could live with it for that long.
Staff were ok, would have been improved by a nice smart uniform but in general all was 'ok'.
At the right price this Riad would make a great base as it is right in the middle of the City but any more than travel lodge prices and you may feel let down.

Firstly I didn't stay here, but did pop in for a drink on my way back from shopping in the souks.

Very welcoming atmosphere, seriously cold beer.

Promised to call back for dinner but alas we didn't return to the Riad next door to Edwina's place.

Certainly would recommend the hospitality.

I stayed at this hostel for several nights and only thing that let it down were the showers and toilets

the toilets were pretty cramped and when doors closed they were against your knees I am not a big guy so could imagine this being pretty uncomfortable for anybody larger!

also the showers are shared and do not have anywhere to hang clothes so you just have to throw clothes over the top and hope nobody falls through the curtains while slipping on the often wet floor :)

the owner speaks pretty good english as does the local tour guide who visits often and can provide excelent priced trips but the woman who looks after the hostel most of the day does not speak as good english so it is best if you can speak some french if you need help during the day.

maps and wifi are freely available and there is a great terrace with sun loungers , when I asked I was also given a towel for free and water, hot drinks and some food us available to buy during the day

only warning is that the doors close at midnight and do not re-open till about 7am so I ended up moving for the last day as had a 5:30 flight rather than get everybody up at 4am

Riad Zitoune is a lovely and unusual building with long, narrow rooms full of lots of natural light. The beds are also unusual -- long, narrow cushions on the floor -- but I slept fine on it. The breakfast is simple and tasty, but we could never quite figure out what was free and what we had to pay for.
Our only complaint was the one restroom/shower (which has several stalls) was always very wet and out of toilet paper. So bring flip-flops and TP, and you should be fine.

this hostel has most of the basics: comfortable bed, hot showers in the morning, breakfast if you'd like, wi-fi, clean facilities throughout. There is no communal kitchen, and the upstairs terrace is still in the works. But the proprietor is a very honest, kind, and friendly lady, and was helpful in offering advice to a clueless solo traveller.

It is a nice, clean, quiet place. If you want a hip, trendy hostel with loud music in the lobby, a bar & club downstairs, and tee-shirts for sale in the reception area, this is not your place. But it is reasonably priced, very centrally located, and it is clean. All in all, it is a good deal.
