When my wife and I arrived from Essaouira on the evening of 1 Jan we were met at dar Basha by (of course) Abdou who escorted us to the riad. The other worldly atmosphere just grabs you with the smell of incense, candles around the little pool, and extremely tasteful furniture. I especially liked the brass lamps hanging overhead. Abdou's mint tea is to die for and he knows it: He kept offering it to us and it would have been considered impolite to refuse it ;-) Our room was lovely and the shower was inviting.

Breakfast was usually taken on the huge terrace under the sun. The nice girls working at the riad prepared for us crepes from scratch which were served with Moroccan bread, pain au chocolat, honey, jams, coffee and more mint tea. The tent on the terrace is a quaint romantic feature that is warm enough in winter for an afternoon tea or candle lit dinner. The free wifi is a huge convenience as I had my notebook and the best reception is on the ground floor.

Each guest is provided with a mobile phone, a map, and a guide book. Nice touch. A key to the front door is not provided but Abdou appears to be available 24/7 which proved to be a Godsend for a couple of guests who lost their way in the medina after a New Years bash. For those times when we had to wait for him to answer the door, a black and white neighbourhood cat, who seems to make it her business to know each of the riad's guests, kept us in charming company.

Will definitely stay here again. Many thanks to Mike, Lucy, Abdou and the girls for making our stay in Marrakech enjoyable and memorable.

This was our first experience staying in a Riad which turned out to be quite invigorating. The Raid Papillion was recommended to be by a fellow trip advisor member which both my wife and I are very grateful for.

We opted for the package which included transfers and dinner and we are glad we did, on arrival at the airport we were taken in a S Class Mercedes to the Riad and welcomed by the Riad manager Mr. Abdou who was charming and most helpful. Our dinner was ready for us and it was delicious! 3 courses and included a variety of desserts.

We stayed here for four nights during Christmas and booked the Hibiscus room. This room was amazing! Although it appeared rather small in the pictures it was more then of adequate size. We also got a chance to see all the other rooms on offer which were equal in grandeur.

The attention to detail was overwhelming i.e. hand carved wooden bed frame, traditional coffee table with amazing detail, and amenities provided which one would not even find at a five star hotel such as Ipod docking station, DVD player with full free access to dozens of DVDs and a LCD TV with freesat and a choice of over 900 channels! (not that you will get time to watch any)

The bathroom was also special which included a huge shower with jets of both ends they also provided luxuary bathrobes and towels.

Overall this was one of the most relaxing holidays my wife and i have been on and we feel the Riad was the main contributor.

Stay here and you will not regret it!

My boyfriend and I stayed in Riad Papillon for 4 nights at the beginning of December 2009 and had a really good time.

Pros:
- LOCATION. This Riad is in a great location. It is right on the edge of the souks and less than 10 minutes walk to the main square (if you don't get too distracted along the way.) We were shown the right direction for the main square on our first day and after that we had no problems finding it or finding our way back to the Riad. Although it was so close to the lively centre of the Medina, it was down a quiet alleyway so felt very secluded and relaxing. It was also very close to a taxi rank which made getting back to the airport very easy.
- BREAKFAST. For em the breakfasts were excellent. If you want a big, cooked, English style fry up then you wont be happy with the breakfasts at Riad Papillon (although they were so helpful they might cook it for you if you asked!). We ate breakfast on the sunny roof terrace and as well as fresh bread, freshly squeezed fruit juice and tea and coffee there was a selection of other tasty surprises which changed everyday, such as pancakes, fresh pastries and omelettes.
- SERVICE. The man who runs the day-to-day stuff at Riad Papillon, Abdou, was friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble and he was always welcoming and willing to help us, regardless of the time of day.
-MOBILE PHONE. Abdou gave us a mobile phone to use at the beginning of our stay in case we ever got into any trouble and needed his help. This was a really nice touch as for some people Marrakech could be a little daunting. Luckily we had no real need for it though.

Cons:
The cons are very minor and barely affected the pleasantness of our stay, but just prevent me from giving this Riad 5 stars.
- SHOWER. For me the only real disappointment was the lack of hot water and poor temperature control in the shower. Although I understand that the water is heat via a tank on the roof and therefore this kind of inconsistancy is common in places like Marrakech, we tried showering at different times of day and never got more than 5 minutes of hot water and sometimes non at all - and the Riad wasn't that busy. I also found that when the water was hot, it was too hot for me but I realise this is an individual preference.
-FRONT DOOR. We didn't have a key for the front door. Although there was a doorbell, a knocker and an intercom on two occasions when we arrvied back at the Riad Abdou was out and we couldn't get in. On the first occasion we decided to just head back out into the city as we only wanted a change of clothes. On the second we used the mobile to call Abdou and he arrvied less than 5 minutes later. So although it wasn't a large inconvenience, I would've felt I had a bit more freedom if we'd had our own key and I would've felt happier about staying out later in the evening (although Abdou assured us there was no problem with returning late.)
-ROOM SERVICE. When our room was cleaned it was done very nicely, with the bed made beautifully and our possessions tidied away. However, on one day we didn't get room service which was disappointing as we left the room fairly early to sit up on the roof for the morning and then were out all afternoon so I'm not sure why it wasn't done.

Other:
-DECOR. This Riad has been recently refurbished so it has 'modcons' such as a wall mounted tv, ipod chargers and air conditioning/heating, which made our stay comfortable. It has had a sympathetic refurbishment which i felt was done very nicely, with an old-style feel whilst being clean and new. However, if you are after a proper, old fashioned and traditional Riad, warts and all then this one may not be for you.
-BED. The bed was quite hard - harder than the average european hotel bed. My boyfriend and I found this perfectly comfortable but if you dislike harder beds you might want to stay somewhere else.
-RECOMMENDATIONS. I was slightly disappointed that when I asked Abdou if he could recommend any local places to eat that were less touristy he could only recommend the main square and Cafe Arab - both of which are very touristy. It would have been nice if he could've pointed us in the direction of somewhere a little more off the beaten track. When my dad stayed at a Riad in Marrakech (I can't remember which one) he was shown a few tucked away local places. But i suppose if tourists like us went to those kinds of places then they wouldn't be local! So this is only a minor point as, apart from this, Abdou was very helpful.

Conclusion: Excellent value for money, a lovely, clean Riad in a great location with friendly and helpful staff. It was a pleasure to return to this tranquil and relaxing Riad after a busy day exploring the Medina. Only a couple of minor points to mark it down - the main one being the shower. Thank you very much, Riad Papillon for an enjoyable and relaxing stay in Marrakech

Thank you for your feedback Olivia. We have now installed an electric backup to the solar system for water heating. Front door keys are available for guests on requests. Our website includes restaurant reccomendations and we will be expanding this to include less touristy establishments that we know and trust. We hope you will be able to come back and stay with us again soon. Best wishes, Mike

Have just returned from a few days in Marrakesh and want to say that everyone that visits this city should make a point on staying at this Riad. I had booked to stay at a neighbouring Riad but was lucky enough to be seated next to the owner on my flight to the city and she said that if i had time to stop by and see her Riad. Even though my place was nice Riad Papillon was amazing. Cannot believe that the owners had no previuos Hotel experience because the place offers everything even down to providing cell phones so as if you get lost (and you will) they will direct you to safety. Hats on the rooftop loungers, sun block, you name it they have it without any charges to you. I look forward to visiting this city and without a dought will be staying here, hope all that reads this does too. Congrats to Lucy and Mike.

Riad Papillon is a beautiful and welcoming place to stay. The rooms are clean and well equipped, with lovely little touches such as rose petals sprinkled on the bed and scented orange oil burning on our arrival.

Boushra and Amdou are both lovely and will go out of their way to help. The food is delicious and the breakfast is enough to keep you going all day!

I would definitely recommend Papillon- great location, beautiful rooms and roof terrace, friendly staff - everything you need for a pleasant stay.

We were probably the 5th guest of this Riad, but as a beginner one, we were treated very professionally! The design was very nice, whole riad was perfectly clean, the breakfast was good (we had dinner once, and it was also perfect), the location is very good, once you learn how to get there:) Apart from all, the staff was excellent. Especially thanks to Abdou, for being there, anytime we needed!
