We wanted to visit the poshest hotel in Marrakech and decided to go for lunch. We went along at 10 to book for lunch, only to be declined entry by a rude, monosyllabic doorman, who told us 'no entry until 11'. Not impressed, I pushed the point that I wanted to go to reception to book, and he reluctantly let in 'just you' not my husband. The receptionist was much more professional and not only let me in but instructed the doorman to let my husband in to. We went for a delightful wander around the hotel grounds, which are beautiful, and then had coffee on the terrace. The coffee was perfect, and so it should have been for £7.50 each, but the service was pretty snooty. Turned out the lunch was going to be 1000 dirhams each (about £85) for a buffet I'm sure would have been beautiful. But we'd had our fill of the place by then, so we paid for the coffee and left, smiling beatifically at the doorman as we left.

First the positive: La Mamounia lives up to its reputation when it comes to the beautiful building and garden. However the rest of the experience was a disappointment. We had checked the menus online before our trip and decided that we wanted moroccan tea with savoury and sweet dishes. Our hotel concierge made a reservation and when we arrived we said we had reservation for afternoon tea. We were sent to the garden pavillion where the menu was very short and basic. When we asked if there were not more choices the reply was that moroccan tea was served in the pavillion. We asked if there was tea served on the terrasse behind the hotel and the reply was "only american tea". We settled in for our mint tea, mille feuille and ice cream dessert. Then the waitress came and told us that unfortunately she did not have all the ingredients for the ice cream dessert. As my sister did not find anything on the limited menu that she liked, she said OK I will have it anyway. When her ice cream dessert came it was basically ice cream and caramel sauce. To top the experience she was given a dirty napkin with lipstick on it. The waitress apologized for the napkin but there was no discount offered on the invoice for this underwhelming experience.
On our way back we decided to have a glass of champagne on the terrasse to counterbalance the let down of the tea. We were given menus and to our surprise see that the moroccan tea with savoury and sweet dishes we had wanted was served on the terrasse (Bar Italien) but when we arrived neither the waitress in the Bar Italien nor the waitress in the pavillion asked us whether we wanted the tea menu served in the Bar Italien or the tea and desserts served in the garden pavillion, nor pointed out the difference.
As we had already had tea and sweets, we each chose one savoury dish. To cut a long story short one of the dishes was not as described in the menu. First the waiter said it's supposed to be like this. Then upon our insistence, he went to the kitchen and came back with the same line: it's supposed to be served like this. When we insisted that we wanted the ingredient that sold us on the dish, he went again to the kitchen and then returned with the answer that the kitchen did not make this sauce today! We expressed our astonishment at the lack of standard and mixed messages we were given. After a while a manager came to offer compensation in the form of more champagne or tea and dessert, which we declined. However the waiter discreetly filled up on the champagne and soon appeared with tea and moroccan sweets.
All in all a frustrating and disappointing visit to La Mamounia.
The two stars are for the beautiful gardens and one star for the manager's attempts at damage control.

We decided to have a late lunch here and visit the famous gardens. At this time one can have buffet lunch by the pool or eat from a bar menu in the garden area. We chose the latter so that we could relax on the sofas. The food is delicious and there is a complete drinks menu - be prepared to pay London prices! The only let down was the service - we asked for our table to be cleaned and the waiter simply wiped the surface throwing crumbs on my feet and on the floor!

Worst place we ate in the whole Morocco, first the service was terrible, waiters kept fighting between themselves and we got an absolutely horrible treatment from the hostess, the food was frozen, chewy and without a single tip of flavor. What a horrible experience we had here. The place is nice and luxurious but the service and food are a catastrophe. Avoid.

Also, it is unnecessarily expensive. The prices do not match the quality.

We had a lovely lunch there by the pool. The buffet was amazing and the service impeccable. Although there were more than 30 of us we were very well served. I would highly recommend it.
