We discovered that palace through booking.com
Such a surprise!
behind a discreet fanstastic door... a true palace completely new with an authentic vintage old mood. The daughter's owner is a precious designer artist who renovated entirely each room with a different signature. From japanese to venice.... We loved the service, the huge pool (for a ryad!) and the peace of the place. Definitely 5 stars! If really we want to find something .... not perfect. maybe the breakfast. Excellent but simple. Not as sophisticated as the place.

Quite simply one of the most luxurious Moroccan riad hotels I have stayed in. Despite the authentic craftsmanship of the property, the hotel is actually new; having been purpose built by the French family that own and run it. The advantage of a purpose built riad is that it affords rooms and bathrooms to be of modern proportions and what’s more, everything works! The styling of the rooms is exquisite and our suite on the first floor had beautiful attention to details from the carved plaster work to the rose petals on the bed. We found the dining a little over priced and since the hotel has yet to really be discovered, without fellow guests to create an atmosphere, we ate alone - but service was very friendly and genuine. It is not far to walk into old town and a taxi can take you to new town and the elegant and modern restaurant and bars.
The owners arranged for us to have a day out in the valleys and mountains with a Berber guide – well worth the investment.
Having stayed at both high end riads and the more down to earth guest houses in the city, the Demeures d'Orient certainly sets the standard for others to beat in Marrakesh.

My Girlfriend and I stayed at the hotel for 3 nights, we loved it and yes it really is exactly like the pictures. Our room was the junior suite Mandalay, it was a lovely room with a huge bath tub, so big infact i still haven't come across anything as big. Please note there was no shower. They treated us like royalty, and we were the only guests for the first 2 nights. On our first night we arrived at about 9pm, we were told that all the restaurants were closed or we should of booked prior to arriving, thus the only place left to eat was in the hotel (surprise, surprise!). My girlfriend and i refused to beleive this and asked the manger to order us a taxi, he was a little apprehensive and insisted we stayed in the hotel for dinner. We took one look at each other, having read so much, seen so much and heard so much about this magical city. We demanded a taxi, within 20 mins we were eating dinner in the famous Jamal El Fna. It was one of the most tastiest meals we have ever eaten, how fabulous it was eating at the stalls. On a whole the hotel is very central, after walking around the city all day to come back to such a delight and wonderful place, was a blessing.

My wife and I stayed stayed here for six nights at the end of October 2008. Situated in the bustling Medina area, just north of the Souk, it is about a 15 to 20 minute walk to the main central square of Jemal el Fna.

It has been open for about 8 months and was renovated from scratch by its current French owners and is configured as a traditional Riad with the 8 rooms surrounding a shaded courtyard taken up with a swimming pool. It is located down a labyrinth of side streets, but has the benefit of being accessible by taxi, to the front door. It has been beautifully and tastefully decorated, spotlesslessly clean and is a real haven of opulence in an otherwise manic city.

The premises is very well staffed by mainly French speaking staff, although a couple of the receptionists speak good English. Breakfast is provided, but it is tediously unvarying and there is a limited, but adequate dinner menu. Staff have clearly been told to encourage guests to eat in the Riad rather than in the many other restaurants in the city, and it got a little tiring being continually asked by different members of staff if we were eating in the restaurant that night. On one day, we were asked 8 times! Having said that, the chef did cook to order, and when we did eat there, the food was excellent.

On the same theme, we felt disapproval when we went out for the evening. Early in our stay we were warned very forcibly of the dangers of walking out on our own and the receptionist insisted he organised a taxi for us to the restaurant. This door to door service turned out to be extremely expensive, firstly as the restaurant was only a 5 minute walk away (althought the taxi took us round the houses to justify the outrageous fare!), and secondly there is absolutely no problem in walking around at night as we subsequently discovered.

This is a small issue in the face of a very comfortable stay and we would recommend this Riad for its location, cleanliness, service and attention to detail.

We had a lovely visit to this beautiful, peaceful riad. It provided a calm respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. We stayed for three days, taking two rooms: the junior suite Amoudaria for my two children, and the Royale suite Perle d'orient for my husband and me. Both rooms were just beautiful and immaculately clean. The beds were very comfortable with gorgeous bathrooms. Everyday, they put fresh rose petals on the bed and a tray of cookies at night.

Our suite, Perle D'Orient, had a lovely sitting area and tiled fireplace. The bathroom had a tub and separate shower and was beautifully done. They gave us fragrant body oil, lotions and soaps in vials with sterling silver caps.

The children's room, the junior suite Amoudaria, only had a tub, no shower. If having a shower is important, be sure to ask for a room with a shower. Also, this suite was the only one that could be split into two beds for the children.

Breakfast by the pool each morning was a relaxing delight. They brought us tasty breads and fresh fruit. One day, we had yogurt. However, anything more substantial was extra cost, like eggs. This was not made clear when we made our reservation, on their website or when we had breakfast. They need to clarify in their terms that only continental breakfast is provided.

We ate dinner at the riad all three nights. I found the food to be very overpriced and only mediocre,we were too exhausted to eat out.. One night, our dinner came cold and was quite skimpy--like they ran out of food and had to split two portions into four. We really enjoyed the evening entertainment and did not mind the mediocre overpriced meals because the setting was so lovely by the pool.

The hotel manager, Siad, was exceedingly solicitous and accommodating, always asking after our well being and trying his level best to make our stay comfortable. In fact the entire staff provided excellent service. They arranged two different guides for us who were quite knowledgeable and entertaining. We were warned that some guides will charge exorbitant prices to naive tourists, but our guides were superb and honest. The only drawback for us was that only a few members of the staff spoke English. My French is quite rudimentary, so communication with the owners and much of the staff was difficult. Thank goodness my son speaks Arabic, so he could help with translation.

One final thing, the billing was a bit of a mess because I booked our reservation on a third party website in USD that converted it into Euros at an old conversion rate giving us an excellent price in USD. However the website, then converted it into Euros using real-time conversion (at a less attractive rate) after we had already reserved in USD. Then the hotel converted the Euros into dirhams. We frankly had no real idea what we were paying. I would book directly with the hotel and try to get them to match the rates seen on websites and book in dirhams to avoid the conversion mess. Also, do not pay for the airport transfer in advance, The prices are much less with regular taxis.

The hammam was clean and relaxing. However, I enjoy a deep massage, but since the masseuse did not speak any English, I could not communicate this to her. My massage was only so-so, but the hammam and gommage were excellent. Just make sure you clarify exactly what services you want beforehand because we were charged for services we did not ask for. It was nice, but expensive.

With all that said, we loved our stay at Demeures D'Orient despite the small kinks that this new riad will surely work out in time. We did not want to leave and will surely return.

  • Liked — Everything, it was visually stunning and quite luxurious
  • Disliked — Lack of English speaking staff and mediocre dinner food
