“A birthday treat to remember”
Reviewed November 21, 2011

My partner and I stayed at Maison MK in July to celebrate my birthday. We didn’t want to leave. Maison MK is, quite simply, one of the best hotels we’ve ever stayed at – an oasis of warm colour, stylish interior design, impeccable service and an attention to detail, all within a stone’s throw from the wonderful, frenetic Djemaa el-Fna.

The owners have done an outstanding job turning a crumbling old riad into a beautiful boutique hotel!!

From the supremely comfortable bed and enormous tub in a polished tadelakt bathroom to the ambient lighting, fresh coffee outside your door each morning, ipod in room (pre-loaded with chilled music) and the mobile phone provided in case you get lost wandering the souk, Maison MK offers a level of quality and service we’re yet to find elsewhere.

We enjoyed afternoon tea and cake by the pool each day and drinks at sunset on the über-cool roof terrace, overlooking the rooftops of Marrakech and the Katoubia Mosque.

We also took advantage of Maison MK’s in-house spa – the hammam and massage were excellent; did their cooking course, which was great fun (and we got to eat the delicious results!); and celebrated my birthday with a beautifully presented and tasty degustation dinner at gastro MK.

We even managed to leave the hotel occasionally and explore fantastic Marrakech, but we really were hard-pressed to leave our little sanctuary.

And if you run out of steam in the souk, and don’t feel like enjoying the roof terrace or the plunge pool, why not watch a film in the private movie room - they’ll even rustle up some popcorn for you to get that real cinema feel :-)

In fact, if we had to dig deep for a negative, the only thing we can think of is that the air-con started leaking the afternoon we arrived. Within minutes of telling the manager, we were moved to another room and someone was sent to fix the problem. Really amazing service - I guess you can tell a lot about a place by how they deal with these kind of challenges – and Maison MK passed this test with flying colours!!

We’re already talking about a return visit, with friends and family. Marrakech is a wonderful, vibrant city and our stay at Maison MK made it even more memorable. If you’ve got a little more in the budget or are looking for somewhere to celebrate a special occasion or honeymoon, we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it – it’s a place like no other.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

This was our first visit to Marrakesh and we had an amazing time. The team at Maison MK organised such a good holiday for us. So much helpful advice before we even arrived and once we were there, all the staff from top to bottom gave us excellent suggestions about shops, restaurants, tours, monuments, and so much more. All in all a fabulous stay at a fabulous hotel - just look at their website, except in reality it looks even better in real life.

Having just stayed at Maison MK and read the previous review I think they have got it spot on. Maison MK is a lovely haven of tranquillity in the heart of Marrakech and the perfect place to spend a long weekend in this fascinating city. The hotel itself is beautifully designed and the terrace is a real highlight with amazing views. There is nowhere nicer to have breakfast or evening drinks before a delicious dinner at “Gastro”, the hotel restaurant, which is so delicious we could not stop talking about it. What I particularly loved about Maison MK were the unexpected little touches. From the mobile phone that had been pre-programmed with lots of useful numbers (including that of the riad in case you get lost!) and the ipod with lots of chilled out music for your room to the morning flask of coffee left in front of your door (a perfect to way to get ready for the wonderful breakfast), Maison MK had really thought of everything. These little things really made our stay special. As a guest at Maison MK you really feel like you are staying with old friends and it was hard to drag ourselves away at the end of the weekend. Thank you to Paul, Aoibheann, Mary and the rest of the team for having us.

Room Tip: All the rooms are lovely

Just returned from a 3 night stay and really have only superlatives to write, many of which are in all the other reviews under here. You can see from the pictures alone that the riad is, without doubt, totally luxurious; the personalised service is second to none and the welcome you receive is like that of an old friend. What makes it stand out is all the luxurious and thoughtful touches and the way in which the luxury and service is ‘delivered’ in a totally non pretentious, non obsequious way (which won’t suit everyone!) It begins from the moment you make an enquiry to the return home...

For me this was a surprise trip planned by my husband, who thankfully had remembered me mentioning this riad some time ago! '

He liaised with Aoibheann and the team for restaurant recommendations and suggestions for our itinerary. From the smooth airport collection, to the welcome as we arrived by Mary and her team, the beautiful bedroom and public areas, to the amazing experience of the hamman and massage treatment, the sun loungers on the roof terrace by day and the romantic bar up there in the evenings, to the suggestion of a personal tour guide, to the restaurant bookings, the cute mobile phone (in case you get lost), the in-room iPod and the invaluable chats at breakfast about the day’s plans, it all runs like a well oiled machine.
Even breakfast is personalised – no buffets here thank goodness, but alternating French and Moroccan treats - it has to be said the scrambled eggs were the best I’ve had in a long time! The tea is even ‘boutique’ ! (but needs a stylish teapot to go with it!!)

We saved ourselves for Gastro (Hotel restaurant) on the last night and were not disappointed – and loved the little private end of the dining room which had been reserved for us. The food was delicious, paced well and thoroughly well deserving of its current rave accolades and reviews.
We also ate at Le Tobsil which was a fantastic evening – authentic Moroccan food in a luxurious setting with great service. Cafe de La Poste was another evening and although good, not one we would rush back to or necessarily recommend – service levels are poor, staff a little arrogant and a feeling this caters for expats and location/appearance is the pull and not the quality of the food. Tables are also far too close together. An unexpected find was Le Chat Qui Rit in the new town. A superb French Bistro, with a super owner who prides himself on using as much home grown produce as possible or organic ingredients. Meat quality, food and service were all superb................ such a shame we only had lunch there; the evenings apparently are very atmospheric.
Location of Mason MK is superb – a short walk to most places of interest or a taxi from the nearest gate ( Bab K’Sour) to venture further is only seconds walk away. The main square (5mins) is interesting at any time of day and there is always something going on!! Food choices for lunch for tagines or couscous dishes are plentiful and very cheap.

6 rooms is perfect and I imagine the place would never feel crowded. Indeed we were lucky enough to have the Client Manager Mary to ourselves for 2 days and found her to be so helpful; nothing was too much trouble and she always made time to seek us out and ensure we were enjoying our stay
In terms of the rooms everything is thought of and the bath, it has to be said, is out of this world! (Complete with resident large duck, a humorous touch we loved!).

We travel extensively and the world is a big place BUT we’ll find time to return here for a weekend break and take some friends with us to share the experience.....

Room Tip: All the rooms look superb - the baths are amazing!

we chose Maison MK as we were looking for an exclusive use property close to the centre of Marrakech. Maison MK is a very pretty small Riad which has been refurbished to a very high standard. The food is very good and best of all the staff are wonderful. Mary and her Team were incredibly attentive and absolutely charming all of which made for a very happy time.

Room Tip: all rooms are very good. Room 1 is bigger than the others and is the master bedroom.

We were amongst a party of 11 who stayed at MK in October 2011. What a fantastic way to celebrate a birthday. From the courteous collection at the airport to the caring oasis of MK with their wonderful staff and the memorable day trip they organised to the Atlas and back to what by then felt like a dream home and great food and drink.....
Thank you Mary, Paul and everyone at MK. We had a wonderful stay.
