“Our stay at Dar Anebar.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 30, 2009

During our recent visit to Morocco we stayed at several beautiful Riads. However, the one that conjures up the warmest memories is Dar Anebar in Fez. This lovely old Riad , well appointed and comfortable, owes its' success entirely to the staff and above all to the owner Ahmed. From the moment we arrived the warm welcome engulfed us, and throughout our stay everyone did everything possible to make our stay enjoyable. They wanted us to love Morocco! Even when we experienced difficulties with car hire Ahmed took over and solved the problems. Each evening on our return to the Riad he would find time to enquire about our day and to offer suggestions as to where to visit or where to eat. His lovely ,warm personality fills the whole place! If we return to Fez we will definitely stay at Dar Anebar. Thank you Ahmed.
sincerely Ray and Eileen Guntrip.

Very warm welcome on arrival by all staff. Service superb - nothing was too much trouble. All the staff really wanted us to enjoy Morocco and were very proud of their Riad.
They were exceptionally helpful with regard to our onward journey and helped with phone calls and all the arrangements.
The rooms were amazing a true taste of Real Morocco.

Lovely riad. Beautifully decorated. The suite rooms are very large with sitting room, big bed, dressing room and huge bathroom.
Staff are very friendly and food at both breakfast and dinner is good.
It is on the edge of the medina so easy to get to by car as not a far walk from where a taxi can drop you but it is about 20 minutes walk to the Blue Gate area of the medina however this gives you a great opportunity to explore different areas of the medina as you go to and from the hotel. Just make sure you remember how to get back!!
Roof terrace gives a great view over the medina although more could be made of it.
Whilst we were there (October) it wasn't very busy and so felt very quiet which meant atmosphere was lacking a touch but not really through the fault of the hotel.
The early morning call to prayer is noisy and lengthy but the same would be for anywhere in Fes! Be prepared!

While staying at the Sofitel I came here for lunch based on the Sofitel concierge's recommendation for an authentic Fes meal and I was so impressed by the decor, service and cuisine that I checked out of the Sofitel the next day and checked into Dar Anebar. The central courtyard is beautiful and feels so special and charming, and the service is incredibly warm and the food is sensational. While the rooms aren't the most luxurious, they are still quite pretty and comfortable and overall the dar anebar is an outstanding value and exudes charm. While I only stayed here one night, the riad stands out in my travels and i remember it fondly.

I had the pleasure of staying in the Dar Anebar for five nights in July, and I am extremely pleased with my experience. Constructed around an open central courtyard with a fountain and filled with trees and plants, the Dar Anebar offers the experience of immersion in a Fasi upper-class residence of the early 20th century. Rooms in the Dar Anebar are, in effect, suites, large, well-furnished, equipped with television and split air conditioning, and furinished in excellent Moroccan style. Floors are superb zellij, with tadelakt walls and fine dark wood furniture. The room was clean and quite comfortable, and the bathroom was large and well-equipped.
Mustafa, Aziz and all the staff at Dar Anebar made my stay a wonderful experience. Friendly and always willing to offer help and suggestions, their effforts and hospitality made me feel at home, rather than in a traditional hotel.
Food at the Dar Anebar was superb. The Dar is fortunate to have a very talented cook who prepared delicious Fasi specialties for me every night during my stay. After the first night, I did not even consider eating elsewhere. I spent one month in Morocco, and I can frankly state that the food I ate at the Dar Anebar was the best food I had anywhere in Morocco, and, indeed, the best Moroccan cuisine I experienced anywhere around the world. Even if one is not staying at the Dar Anebar, I recommend dinner there, which is served in the exquisite courtyard or the intimate rooms off to its sides.
The Dar Anebar is located a bit far from the souks, perhaps a 15 minute walk, but it is pleasant enough, and, after all, the reason one stays in a riad is to experience life in a Moroccan medina, so location only contributes to the overall experience.

We really enjoyed our stay at this riad. A tranquil oasis at the end of a dead end street this place provides the perfect escape from the normal hussel and bussel of the medina. Located within the medina, this riad has large well furnished clean rooms and the friendly yet discreet service allowed us to relax following a hectic day in the city. We were welcomed by a glass of mint tea in the tranquil courtyard; a pure god send after a day travelling. Other advantages include a terrace overlooking the city (perfect for an evening gin and tonic) and an excellent competitively priced restaurant where we enjoyed a traditional three course Moroccan meal with a bottle of the local wine. Breakfast the following morning consisted of homemade Moroccan breads and pastries providing an excellent start to our day exploring the city. The staff kindly organised us an excellent guide for the day who showed us the delights of the medina and its maze of streets. We would thoroughly recommend this to anyone seeking a traditional morroccan experience with a hint of luxury.

We stayed 4 nights at this riad in Fes, and our every need was attended. The staff is friendly and accommodating, and the room was very large with a comfortable bed. A/C was self-controlled in the room, and worked perfectly. The bathroom was large and we had plenty of hot water and good water pressure. There was a leak from the feeder pipe to the toilet the first morning, but by the time we arrived back to the riad from venturing out into the medina, it had been fixed and did not recur.
We found the room to be quiet and spent a bit of time in the main courtyard with our computers, using the wifi. (Unfortunately, we were unable to get a wifi connection in our room, but it did work perfectly in the courtyard.)
The breakfasts were adequate, but not great. We were met with a boiled egg each day (sometimes it was extremely runny, sometimes it was firm, sometimes it was near rubbery), a large carafe of fresh orange juice, good coffee with hot milk, and an assortment of Moroccan breads and some croissant and rolls. There was always a dish of cheese and some yogurt. My real disappointment at breakfast was the little packets of flavorless jam. How much money could they have been saving by putting them out instead of serving really flavorful, homemade jams - in a country where excellent fruit is available everywhere? At the least they could have bought excellent jams.
I ate dinner at the riad the first night and when my husband arrived on the second night we also ate dinner there. Both nights the menu was identical. Choice of couscous, or lamb tagine, or chicken tagine. The food was good, but not exceptional. Wine is available.
The owner was not there most of the time, but the staff was more than accommodating. We asked for, and received, an excellent guide, named Hassan; arrangement for a rental car that we could drop off in Marrakech; reservation for dinner at a restaurant we requested; the loan of a copy of the English version of the excellent book Fes from Bab to Bab that we could use to help us wander through the labyrinthine streets of the medina.
In addition, it is a three-minute walk to the Palais Jamais, where there is a lovely bar with a terrace view of the medina. Overall, it was an enjoyable stay, and I would recommend this riad to others.
