“A feast for the senses”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 25, 2012

Everything we learned about Riad Numero 9, from the photos online, the YouTube video and Stephen's helpful emails told us that this would be a very special part of our visit to Morocco. But the experience far exceeded our expectation. Stephen and Bruno are gracious and generous hosts who take a genuine interest in their guests. The Riad itself has been restored with attention to every exquisite detail and the outcome is just stunning. There is nothing about it that says "hotel"; this is like staying in a private home. Atika and Kitoum. who manage the day-to-day care, are delightful ambassadors for Morocco and great cooks too. In a couple of months, when Bruno opens his elegant new restaurant next door, this will become a destination for discerning travelers who seek to get to the heart of Morocco's ancient culture and artistic traditions.

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent.

Going for the first time to fes with my 2 boys was already an unforgetable experience. But stephen and bruno made it so easy, fun and at ease that was a pleasure. Every meal was a homemade feast. All the flavours of real morrocan cooking. Even the kids enjoyed tasting new flavours and tastes. The Riad is an architectonic and decorative gem. Each detail was perfectly thought. Each room with their own style. We stayed at the family room. The bathroom was the highlight. Coming back from walking all Fes to the riad with all candles lighted was incredible! The roof top is a great place to see the sunrise over Fes houses roofs. It was an unforgetable experience and we will return soon. The magic of Fes, the Riad and Stephen, Bruno and staff, highly recommended.

Stephen, Bruno and their staff have created an oasis of calm and serenity within the bustling Fes Medina. Although our train from Marrakech to Fes was 2 hours late, we were met at the station as promised, quickly transported through the winding streets of Fes Medina to Riad 9, and presented with a sumptuous dinner prepared by Bruno and staff. Staying at Riad 9 is like being in a warm and well-appointed home. Each morning, Stephen made a point of checking in with us, offering his guidance on where to go, what to see and do, and what to buy. More importantly, with Stephen's expert advice, the merchants we purchased from were honest and reliable, and the treasures we brought home with us are quality pieces, worth owning. There's a genuine and gracious warmth emanating from Riad 9. I understand there's a restaurant now being created and opening in the very near future, with Bruno as the chef, so we're already planning our return to Morocco. Riad 9 is our destination in Fes.

Room Tip: Any room at Stephen & Bruno's place is excellent.

Lovely, Beautiful. Magical, and Exquisite are some of the words to describe Riad Numero 9. Stephen and Bruno were a perfect team in every possible way. The restaurant "Stephen Bruno" couldn't be better. The food was consistently fresh, great, and beautiful! Great staff, beautiful place, and an amazing restaurant. Thank you for the wonderful days!!!

We have just returned from a fantastic trip to Fez, Morocco where we stayed at the wonderful Riad Numero 9 owned by Stephen and Bruno. After being picked up by one of Stephen's team at the airport, we were taken straight to the Riad. When we arrived, we were completely blown away by Stephen and Bruno's exquisite taste and attention to detail of their incredible Riad. We were fascinated with the contrast between the traditional Riad where we slept and the restaurant joint on (Restaurant 7) run by the adorable Bruno. He provided the most exquisite meals - healthy, traditional and delicious! Each meal was full of delicious flavours, everything was locally sourced. We had wonderful salads made with an incredible mix of flavours and preserved lemons. Breakfast was served with freshly squeezed juices and home made conserves on freshly cooked pancakes. Slightly less healthy was his his incredible desserts, including home made lemon meringue tart, fresh fruit salad dressed with rose water and rhubarb tart where the rhubarb had arrived from no further than Paris (Rhubarb is not available locally)!!! We were staying at Riad 9 for 3 nights and they could not have been more accommodating. From providing delicious meals, advising us with our photo shoot and connecting us with the most amazing experiences! Stephen was so accomodating that he even arranged a white horse for our photo shoot and also suggested and allowed us to photograph the horse inside the Riad!!! We could not recommend Riad 9 or Restaurant 7 enough, apart from the sheer luxury, incredible design and unbelievable food, above all was Stephen and Bruno's ability as hosts - they were generous with their time, so friendly and Stephen, Bruno and their staff made us feel as comfortable as if we were in our own home and we could not have done it without them!!!

Room Tip: All rooms have been restored to the highest degree and could not be more comfortable and interesting...

Lovingly resorted by owner Stephen Direnza and his partner Bruno, Riad 9 is a magical place. With only three rooms around a courtyard, it is easy to feel as if you have a house in Fes, but with a wonderful staff, including a cook who can prepare excellent dinners in the courtyard. Perhaps not for everyone because of narrow steep stairs and some other "inconveniences" it is one of the most charming and magical places I have been. Outstanding staff, charismatic owner -- a very special place indeed with a view over the entire Medina from the rooftop where your breakfast will be served. Although I was traveling with a friend, the riad would be ideal for two or three couples looking for a romantic setting.

Room Tip: The best room is the one on the top floor. It is spectacular.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Riad n°9 is an 18th century bourgeois residence that has been reincarnated as a boutigue bed and breakfast. The decisive factor in purchasing the property was the roof terrace which has sweeping views over the medina. Riad n°9 was originally purchased as a vacation home in 1999 and underwent a 3-year restoration process. We uncovered all the original 18th century mosaics, carved wood and plaster and hand-painted wood. In 2007, we opened to the public and changed nothing believing guests would appreciate the "personal" touches throughout. Our philosophy is to offer guests the possibility of appropriating the space for themselves and experiencing what an authentic medina home feels like. ... more   less
